This may seem like an odd recommendation as these animes are clearly VERY different in setting and plot but I feel like people who liked Banana Fish might also like Iron Blooded Orphans (and probably vice versa). I saw elements of Ash’s character in several characters in IBO. Both shows deal with the exploitation of children and characters being forced to make difficult decisions and do things they may not want to do for the sake of their own lives or the lives of their loved ones. The main reason for the recommendation is that the emotional attachment I felt for the characters while watching both shows is similar (and at a level most shows simply don’t achieve for me). There’s a real sense of dread when they are in danger and I genuinely hurt for the characters when they hurt. IBO ends on a more hopeful note than BF but both are absolutely gut wrenching (though IBO did not leave me as devastated as BF). I really loved both shows and they will likely stick with me for a long time.
