First, I must say this review is a bit biased. I have read the entirety of the light novel and I have been waiting for this anime since its announcement. With this said, let me start my review. As such, I am rating the series as I think it will be.

I am not going to give a summary since you can read the synopsis, but I will say a few important details. This anime is known as the "grandad of isekai", many tropes in current isekai being influenced by mushoku tensei (ex: truck-kun). Also, this series will be long. The LN is 24 ... or 25 volumes (I forgot). Know that you are getting into a very long story (idk how long this season will cover).

Characters: 8
This is what I believe separates this isekai from mediocrity. The characters will be quite fleshed out. The main character will go through growth. The world does not revolve around the main character (Rudeas); he has to struggle against the world. The protagonist is not some overpowerd god like other isekai protagonists (if you want that, this isn't the series to watch).

Additionally, the side characters are all very likable, with some of them being quite well written. I will not go into details due to obvious spoilers. I will not say anything about any antagonist(s) to completely avoid spoilers, I will only give my opinion. I believe the antagonist(s) to be good.

Story: 8
Story is very unique in regards to most isekai. The story jumps constantly from slice of life (ish) to action to fantasy and to adventure. It is quite a ride. It is generally well written with appropriate twists in the story. It also has quite good world building along with power systems, making any fights which do occur dynamic and interesting. Honestly, it is better to call this series a fantasy rather than isekai since I see the series very different than the connotations given to "isekai".

Art/Animation: 9
I feel that studio bind (their first anime btw) based on the first episode and the PV have done a very good job. The animation and directing is clean and smooth. Additionally, the effects of spells appear to be very well done. A great job for their first anime and quite a chunk above average in regards to other anime. Excellent scenery and fluid motion.

Sound: 8
This is a little early to rate, but I feel it was pretty good. The voice actors are great (with the MCs older self being voiced by gintoki from gintama). The background music is good, but hasn't impressed me like the animation has.

Enjoyment: 9
I am biased. It was great to see something animated very well which I had been waiting for. My expectations for the future of the adaptation is high.

Important, but miscellaneous notes:
1) The eventual ending imo is fantastic. Raised my opinion of the series as a whole.
2) The fact that the MC is quite a bit older than the people he meets it certainly a bit, uh, sus to say the least. You will enjoy the series more if you just conveniently forget his true age.
3) Main character progression is a little shounen-like.
4) Morals and ethics of certain characters and their behaviors can be a bit questionable and off-putting.

Synopsis: I can't really say anything without spoiling much. Essentially, the protagonist follows his friend up a tower (or in this story, THE tower), at first trying to find them, while also getting caught up in the tower's circumstances. Side Note: This series is quite lengthy with 452 chapters as I write this review.

Story (10/10): At first, the story doesn't seem so complex, but as you continue reading, you discover more and more about the workings of the tower. What I would compare this to is Once Piece, where the reader is introduced to more and more of the world's secrets as ... you progress (though One Piece does this a bit better). In doing so, a large portion of the earlier chapters may seem bland, but in actuality they are used as set-ups for later chapters. One other thing to note: this webtoon/manhwa has a habit of setting up competitions through sometimes overly complicated rulesets. I think this is a good idea, but sometimes the author goes overboard. Thankfully, the author has begun to do less of this in recent arcs (however this is just my opinion).

Art (9/10): Going to be honest, the art in the earlier chapters is pretty bad, around 4/10. Thankfully, with so many chapters, the author has greatly improved (or maybe he hired artists, idk), so that's why I have it a 9/10. The art is unique and has its own style, and the colorization is a plus for me.

Character (7.5/10): Once again, this manhwa has a huge cast, just like one piece. Unlike One Piece, it fails to really bring depths to its characters. Each member of its large cast does have distinct personalities, but often the huge cast pulls away from individual characters. Also, some character motivations, are, well, questionable.

Overall (9/10): Overall, the strengths of this manhwa outshine its faults by a significant margine. Unfortunately, the earlier chapters of it give a false representation on what the series is entirely about, so you might need to sit through some average chapters to get to the real meat of the manhwa. I also don't recommend this as someone's first manhwa (only because it has a very unique style), but I would recommend to anyone who has read a few (4 ish) and are looking for more.

When one writes a review, it is imperative to be as objective as possible. This is done for the benefit of the reader and the anime, but sometimes, this is impossible. No matter how hard I attempt to, I cannot review this anime without bias. It is an impossibility. Just know this: To me, this anime is incomparable to any other. This is my number 1 anime, and yet, from my perspective, it is vastly superior than my second. I will try, though unsuccessfully, to explain why. (excuse any grammar mistakes, too lazy to proof-read).

Story: The story is ... split into 6 main arcs (possibly 7 if you look at it another way). Each arc has an entirely different feel from each other, enough so that it can seem that each is an entirely different series. Therefore, for this review, I will be reviewing each arc separately. Also, I will only being giving a short synopsis on the beginning arcs to avoid massive spoilers.

Hunter Exam (8/10): To me, this is the weakest arc within the course of this series. That isn't to say that it's bad, just weaker than the others. It follows our protagonist Gon and his friends and their journey through the Hunter Exam. The arc starts out slow, and some episodes come to nearly a grinding halt, but the later half of it is enjoyable. The one thing that this arc does establish rather well is that there is nearly no plot armor within this series, a breath of fresh air for any shonen.

Post-Exam + Heavens Arena Arc (9/10): This is where the show really starts to begin. You the viewer are finally introduced to the power-system of the world, Nen. This power system is usually hailed as the best in all of anime (and for good reason). It is complex and intricate, but allows for many fantastic scenarios within fights. For firs time viewers, try to remember every minute detail about Nen, it will hold a greater importance later.

Yorknew City (10/10): A masterpiece. This arc shows how to write a proper story with every character making a tiny decision, effecting the plot, and thus, creating the entire story structure. The pacing is brilliant and the villains are some of the best in any anime.

Greed Island (8.5/10): A pretty good training arc with one fantastic "fight". The main villain in this arc is pretty weak, but the rest of it is good.

Chimera Ant (15/10): Yes I put 15 out of 10. No, that's not an exaggeration. This is hands down in my top 3 stories, not in anime, but in any piece of fiction or non-fiction. This arc, in the start, has a clearly defined protagonist and an antagonist, and yet, this distinction slowly disappears. There is no one good, there is no one bad, there are only people and their choices. There is humanity, and inhumanity. Some people dislike this arc due to the pacing or the narrator, and you may too, but I can't view it that way. 3 episodes in particular stand out: 126, 131, 135. Each episode leaves you in sheer awe (just a note: please research the symbolic meaning in 131 and especially in 135 after you finish watching). Please watch HxH, if only for this arc.

Chairman Arc (9/10): This arc is a set-up arc for a much larger in the manga (that's a lot of arcs). It still manages to give a satisfying ending for a story which is not yet complete.

Art (9/10): The color pallet in this show is usually bright, but in those moments where it's not, well... that would be spoilers. The animators did an incredible job keeping up the quality for so many episodes while also matching the colors to the tone of the arc.

Sound (10/10): Opening is eh, but every single back ground song just hits the right mood, especially in the darker arcs.

Characters (10/10): Every character is unique in their own fantastic way. Gon, a child with an odd moral compass, to Killua, a cold killer with a heart of gold. The protagonist in this show are fantastic, but that's not what I'm here to talk about. Where this show really shines is the "villains" (except Greed Island). I use quotations because, yes, they are villains, but not in the conventional meaning. They are simply characters with motives in either direct or indirect conflict with Gon. Sometimes, the "main villian" doesn't even meet with Gon. These characters don't care about what some 12 year old does. It's none of their business. In doing this, Togashi (the creator of HxH) makes the villains feel much more human (instead of being used as a hurdle) and makes their actions far more believable. In some instances, you may be rooting for them instead of Gon.

Enjoyment and Overall (10/10)

Also, if you are someone who already saw HxH and are just looking through reviews, I recommend Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere (look it up).

Story (7/10): A zero to hero story with a small twist. Nothing fantastic, but definitely gets the job done.

Art (8/10): The art style reminds me of what other mangas of a similar type are trying to do, just done much better. Its not fantastic, but is has very nice stills occasionally.

Character (8/10): Character approaches situations reasonably, which makes it much easier to read without being annoyed. Also, the protagonist manages to be a genuinely good guy, but without going out of his way to help everyone ... and everything (he has his priorities straight).

Enjoyment (9/10): Just very fun to read.

Overall (8/10)

Alright, I'm going to make this short since I'm confident almost no one will read it.

Story (6/10): Honestly, pretty eh. Standard isekai level.

Art: (7/10): It gets the job done.

Character (9/10): There isn't any complex character building or anything, but I just simply like how he just does what he wants to do. It feels more natural.

Enjoyment (10/10): Honestly, I don't why I enjoy this manga as much as I do. Its basically well done isekai junk food, yet the mental state of the main protagonist within a constantly repeated story makes it a blast to read. If you want something ... to read when you're bored, this is it.

Overall (8.5/10) round up

Just a note: This is my first review, so pardon me if it has odd errors or is formatted wrong.

Why I must Write This Review: Essentially I have been forced to give this review, not out of the enjoyment I received from the series (although there is much), but simply to ask people to hold their final verdict until the story is closer to being completed. Although the story may not seem like it, majority of the important information of the series is withheld until later. This in turn, makes it appear as though the writer made people had powers ... just to have powers. This is not the case. Everything within the manhwa can be explained, just not until later. Think of it as a slowly unfolding mystery. I won't say anymore to avoid spoilers.

Story: You can read the synopsis, I won't be restating it here. The story in the beginning seems simple, and possibly even bland to some. A classic zero to hero story, great. However, this simple outlook could not be more misguided. Just know that the story itself in the beginning is highly enjoyable to most people, while the writing near the end (which has not been shown yet outside of the LN) is very well done. This eventual reveal in the LN truly blew my mind, so I'm giving the manhwa a 10/10 since its been a truthful adaptation so far.

Art: Nothing much to say. Fantastic art with its own unique style.

Character: Unfortunately, the one thing that can't really be carried over from a LN is all the internal dialogue. I would give the LN protagonist a solid 10/10, but for a manhwa, it only gets an 8. He's still a good protagonist, and you can visibly see him change, but the effect isn't as strong as the LN.

Enjoyment: The series is so enjoyable that its addictive. I blasted through the chapters lightning fast, and I didn't even realize. If nothing else, read the story just for a good time.

Summary: Great art, great story (which has not been entirely revealed), and good character (great in LN). Would recommend to anyone.
