so… i'm finding WA2 more compelling by the second! ep 5 now, that whole phone conversation between mc & ginger was pure brilliance. i particularly loved how she reconnected with mc by laying herself (mostly*) bare, revealing the insecurities that have plagued her since her middle school days with a touch of frustrated, flustered desperation that underlined her craving for earnest emotional connection with mc, whilst maintaining the spunky edge she's been sharpening ever since seemingly finding her footing with mc & co. great writing, great characterization. that whole interaction had me on my toes because it rang extremely true to me. loved the endearing 'call me setsuna!' insistence. however, what I liked most was how she lied by using truth… scary as shit! LOL mc might regret unknowingly unleashing her repressed feelings onto the world… she strikes me as the manipulative type
* is the mc really oblivious enough to not see what the main issue is here? i’m hoping dude has self-esteem issues rather than being afflicted with the thick-headedness you’d typically associate with harem protagonists (maybe because the targeted audience itself has self-esteem issues? but i digress.)
i think i mentioned last time around how gruff girl felt a lot less like an unconvincing ‘hot & cold tsundere with a traumatic past! zomg! exaggerated external demeanour & cringe-worthy lines included’, and more like a genuine character with a genuine personality, genuine insecurities, genuine self-perception issues (“talent”, “genius” // constant comparison to an absent mother) and genuine wants & needs? i was already sold on ginger and mc from the start, same with gruff girl after ep 4, but the story as a whole currently feels much more genuine to me, probably because we’re just starting to see our first hints of serious dramatic tension... oh well. from this point on, i have absolute faith in the characters driving this show (and should probably try to learn their names). i doubt i’ll end up liking it half as much as you do, but it’s nice to watch a very competent anime romance for a change. not sure if i’ve ever seen one, beside kare kano which i thought was pretty great before the 2nd half came around, but it’s been a while since I’ve watched it so not sure if it’d hold up (i think the 1st half would)
this show is moving fast, and i’m almost ashamed to admit i can’t wait for the car the characters are in to hit the proverbial wall, and i’m still betting ginger will be the one driving it. she’s by far the most forceful of the trio, and has been that way ever since mc showed her kindness; and she seems pretty perceptive (that scene in ep 3 where she, unlike mc, realizes that gruff girl does care despite her appearance, or how she tells mc that he’s nice to everyone yet not particularly nice to anyone). so i’m fairly certain she’ll be the main instigator of the drama to come. and, well, also the fact that mc seems ok with being worked around like a dog (again, self-esteem issues? maybe i’m overthinking it, then again, maybe not, it makes sense), and more obviously gruff girl constantly disengages with the world despite being quite perceptive herself, so retreating into her shell is something she’d probably do. all the more reason to keep an eye on my favorite character! hopefully there’ll be a peaceful resolution after the car crashes, i've grown quite fond of ginger
