Welcome to my profile!
Before you see my list, here are few things about me and my creeds toward anime:
- The struggle between what "is good" vs "I like" is real, so how do I rate?
3 scores on a scale of 1 to 10 with a difference betwen 2 consecutive score of 0.5
the final score is =(30*story + 30*characters + 40*enjoyment)/100
a) rating the story is done in 3 steps:
1) oversimplify the whole premis, plot and ending to one sentence and give it a basic score.
2) make an average score betwen "what's all about" and execution
3) move it up or down in rank based on a "tier x" system
b) for characters there are way to many things to take into account so I simply give an overall score
c) for enjoyment.... YOLO casual pleb
d) I consider artwork and sound to be irelevant as a stand alone criteria.
I will detail bellow with exampels what I consider an average story or a very good character.
- Altough I try to use my brain as much as I can when I rate the story and characters(separte it from my personal enjoyment), I'm not a selfproclaimed critical thinker or an elitist. I'm just a normal dude with slightly above the average standards trying his best to be fair with both the shows and myself.
- I rate the series as a whole then I distribute the rates acordingly
(if x anime has 3 seasons and an average score of 7,4 most likely I'll rate 2 seasons with a 7 and one with an 8 )
The obvious reason for this is because most of the time 1st season has the premiss and focuse on the world building, while the final one has the resolve of the plot. One without another are incomplet.
- The average is fucking 5, not 7 nor 3, in other words, what ever I rate as 5 or more it's a "pass".
- I try to focus on what a show did right, rather than what it didn't.
- There are thin lines between plot holes and not wanting to suspend your disbelief/filling the time skip with some basic imagination and commmon sense. Your personal enjoyment draw the line and chose on wich side you'll be.
- If I want a good comedy then I'll try to find over the top characters and situation, not a rape of the laws of physics and aesthetics.
- Killing characters for the glory of satan and shock value makes more sense than plot armor.
- I absolutely hate immortal and OP characters since they nullify any kind of tension.
- Fan service makes everything better. If a show has nothing else to offer beside it, then is a shit show. Fan service has nothing to do with story and characters and btw the whole "distraction" argument is a bullshit.
- Masterpiece != perfection. Whatever show I rate with 10 it means it blew my mind.
- I consider that I have a rational mind aka I'm not good at decoding super abstract visuals. I love deep dialogue and monologues since words, usually, have only 1 true logical meaning. Visuals and animation, everyone can interpret them in every way they want, without knowing if they are right or wrong.
- The 10 listed anime as my favourites are not actually my favourites, they are my top 10.
- I don't belive in objectivity, nor in good/bad taste. The closest thing to objectivity will be to ask everyone to be 100% subjectiv than collect the results into an average score.
- If I were to believe in good taste, every single person except me has shit taste.
- At the end of the day, is all about what caters to you.
If you feel like I'm wrong in judgment or unfair toward a specific anime, feel free to leave a comment on my profile. I'm an open minded person, open to a civilised discussion.
How I rate:
0-1,5: pretty much nonsense or plain stupidity.
2-2,5: random shit happening for most of the time, can skip episodes and won't lose anything.
5-5,5: Not bad, nor good, just a decent time waster.
6-6,5: Things start to get interesting, also this is the upper limit for simple stories and rule of cool.
7-7,5: Still has flaws but it's overall good. More than just an interesting premise, had some good dialogue and a good world construction.
8-8,5: Even better than those rated with 7, stories are either complex, reach deep thems or they are full of thrill and mysteries. Flaws should be easily overshadowed by all the positive aspects.
9-9,5: As good as it gets, without being perfect, they eclipse all others anime that I have seen in terms of complexity, themes and deepness.
And finally 10 out of fucking 10 to the one and only story that blew my mind and shattered it into pieces, standing light years above from everything else.....
0-1,5: They don't even matter or ar plain retarded:
2-2,5: Just like 0-1,5 but a bit better:
3-3,5: Cardbords, one dimensional, obvious plot devices.
4-4,5 Blunt characters that overflow trashy anime.
5-5,5: Your average character that doesn't tell anything, generic af, I wanna be be the very best/cool like no one ever was.
6-6,5: Characters looks decent and fit really well in the scenario, memorability starts to appear(for the positive aspects ofc). This is the upper limit for the rule of cool.
7-7,5: Closer to a real human, complexity starts to appear. Different personalities are coloring the show.
8-8,5: More than wake up, eat, sleep, repeat. They are complex, deep thinking, meaningful dialogue.
9-9,5 Characters that manage to draw the highest level of feelings and empathy towards them, as awesome or realistic as can be.
And finally the 10 for the only show whose characters reach an unmatched level of deepness and complexity. A show where the MCs reflect the life experience, thoughts and philosophy of an author who put all his passion and dedication in it.
