Spriggan is Indiana Jones meets Metal Gear Solid with a little bit of Akira and Assassin's Creed thrown in. I so strongly miss fun, well-animated 2D action features like Spriggan that every so often I go back to watch it and other similar era anime films like it (Akira, Ghost In The Shell, X/1999). Spriggan features a nice combination of less cartoony 90s character design, gorgeous sakuga sequences (i.e. the Istanbul chase), and fun kinetic combat that is rare from anime these days. Yasuke (Anime) add
Mixed Feelings
The good:
- Yasuke is an interesting and likable melancholic hero who I wish was more developed.
- A fair amount the sword choreography uses full animation and actually resembled aspects of real Japanese swordsmanship instead being 100% stylized.
- The music is solid and creates many unique moods even though it doesn't always fit what's happening on screen.
- Much of the background art looks great and is very nicely detailed.

The Bad:
- The series needed more episodes to allow for stronger character development and world building.
- Cliche and underdeveloped secondary and tertiary characters.
- Dialogue and writing leaves much to be desired.

Youjuu Toshi (Anime) add
Wicked City (1987) shares the hyper violence and explicit sexual content of Yoshiaki Kawajiri's other classic film, Ninja Scroll (1993). The story is based on the first book of Hideyuki Kikuchi's Black Guard novel series and as a result feels like just the beginning of a longer narrative. Unfortunately, this is all we get. Viewers are left wanting more information about the intriguing world, two-dimensional yet interesting characters, and the clandestine groups introduced.
