First time I watched anime I didn't even know it was anime (the Moomins :D ). Second time I got a clue (Pokemon). Nowadays anime cuts about 1/4 of the time I watch tv.
Nevertheless, even if I got my first touch on Japanese pop-culture trough anime, manga is my greatest passion today. Ask me why: you can read it wherever without availabity of electricity, computer and internet. You can stare one picture as long as you might will, and you find new things every time you watch mangaka's art (in most animes, art is pretty plain if you stop video). You can see how mangaka develops his/her style on the way. You can quickly check details from previous volumes while reading. Only thing I find bad about manga is that it fills up all your bookshelf x3
