¡Hola, bienvenidos!
My Ratings
Anything 5 and below I didn't like and wouldn't recommend. Anything 7 and up I would generally recommend, at least to anime fans or to people who like the genre.
And an 8 or higher I found terrific in some ways.
My Bias
Regarding my biases and preferences, I am totally fine with fantastical, abstract, or "different" elements. Music I value much more than most people, and I also tend to be dismissive if the characters and animation aren't pleasing to look at. I appreciate great script writing, though some people will appreciate and anticipate plot developments with greater discernment and adroitness of mind than I.
My clear preference is for stories about good-hearted people, as opposed to the nasty nasties. You see, one of the compelling parts of anime for me is the social intelligence and responsiveness to others that we see on display so often among the characters. American culture, and its TV dramas, are so much more about competition and self-promotion, so I have turned to anime for poignant drama, and it has met and much exceeded my hopes.
Subtitles
We all know about this debate of subs vs. dubs. But I want to say one thing about us who appreciate subs. I suspect there is sometimes a hidden but important reason for differences in our opinions about anime: the translations people are reading could be different. I remember once reading a friend's comment where they spelled the character's name as "Kou," instead of the spelling I had seen in my translation, "Ko." I immediately began to wonder if all the wonderful dialogue, which I enjoyed so much in the "ANBU" version of Cross Game, had come across. If interested, you can see in my anime list some of the subtitle translations I think are of good quality. "The difference between 'cosmic' and 'comic' is just one letter," after all.
Favorite Soundtracks
There are tons of very good ones. I tend to think of Cross Game (truly wonderful), Chihayafuru (there are several tracks which could be played at a chess or go club and sound perfectly dramatic while meditative), Shirobako (charming), Land of the Lustrous (luscious and evocative orchestral), and of course Ghibli movies. New additions: Frieren (brilliant complement to certain moving scenes), Jormungand (eclectic, with some inspired creativity and at times a dense and original sound)

I haven't updated MAL for a while, but I've already watched _Lustrous_ and I enjoyed it as far as it went for both the worldbuilding, animation, and kintsugi-inspired sacrifice-for-power theme - at least, as far as the anime goes, which is not very far at all. Sadly, it seems like there won't be a sequel for a long time, if ever, so I should probably look into the manga.
I watched _Tsuioku-hen_ and... I'm still not sure how I feel about it.
You are also correct that I would not like _Legend of the Galactic Heroes_. Mediocre where not awful. Possibly the most overrated anime I've watched yet. (I have a draft review of it but it's depressing to write such reviews. I didn't watch 110 episodes because I wanted to hate it, but because I kept hoping it'd somehow become good and redeem its legendary reputation.)
I have not read Deutsch's books because what I read from him on Twitter or in articles has been quite bad. He may be an expert on some quantum things but when he writes about things I know better about like AI or epistemology, I am unimpressed.
My favorite story of all time is Umineko No Naku Koro Ni (the visual novel, not the anime adaptation). It's a very unique and intricate meta murder mystery. That's probably the one visual novel I would dare call high-brow due to its length and complexity. Other than that, I also like VNs made by Key (Clannad, Little Busters, Rewrite), although you could say those are more moe than high-brow.
As for light novels and manga, I enjoy the Black Bullet light novels (unfortunately on hiatus) and the Dance in the Vampire Bund and Gantz mangas. All of those have many of the same elements that I enjoy in the Monogatari series.
I just feel like there's not a lot of anime like this and it was ambitious enough for me to overlook the negative points of it. Bonus point as well for having a conclusive ending because I'm just getting tired with "go read the manga" ending which, pretty much plagues many anime nowadays.
There's actually some story for Kenshin OVA so pardon me, it is actually one of the few anime that I had actually watched twice. First when I was watching it alone for the first time and I actually did liked it, and but the second time I watched it as a group viewing with my friends I just got really annoyed by the many amount of flashback and it just felt overdramatic. thus I just kinda feel to lower the score.
Well there's no good taste or bad taste when it comes to entertainment and happy holidays too.
Oh I've been doing alright; what about you? : o
Aaaaaa I'm glad that it gave him faith that's good to hear! Haha no need to thank me about that!
I think you'd really like it :)
Anyways, regarding Chihayafuru, yeah I expected to like it too but it didn't click. It's been probably over a year since I tried it so I can't be less vague than that. And yeah, I heard Hitman takes a lot of episodes to get good (like 33? 23? something like that), and Wolf's Rain was suggested to me by an IRL friend whose taste I don't really agree with too much so it's not too high on my list. I haven't seen Kaiba but maybe I could bump it up higher on my PTW list. I'm taking a bit of a break from anime right now, been catching up on some HBO dramas I've meant to watch (namely The Wire and True Detective) so if I get around to Kaiba I'll let you know what I think... just expect it to be a while. Based on what I've read about it I suspect it to be a 7-8, though.
