It's certainly the most active anime database forum out there outside of Crunchyroll, which is primarily a streaming platform. Other sites like Anilist and Anime-Planet are only getting around a quarter of the traffic that MAL does.
Personally, I'd have to attest that this is one of the more active traditional forums out there. It's only slow when compared to a rapid-fire chat messaging app like Discord, which encourages snippy responses by virtue of hosting multiple separate conversations in a small chat window, especially on larger channels.
