Kimi no Na wa is by far a very enjoyable film from begining to end.
Fun watch for both people that have never seen anime and anime lovers that enjoy nice art and two nice main characters.
The flaws, are pretty glaring at first in the way that the story is sort of pushed back and forth that it's hard to make sense where in time is the story currently.
That's about it. The art, top quality as usual. The music, atmospheric. The characters, some complain they're "too dull," but the only characters that actually matter here are the main boy and girl lol which are both
...
lovable.
The story, it has a beginning, middle, and end with a clear setting place and a mysterious way of wanting to know what exactly is going on and how it affects the actors. Plus, a lot of small details I bet many didn't catch on the first time.
The movie as a whole is a very spiritual mix of playing between reality and ethereal themes. A fun watch for the colors and the calm traditions of nature.
After much thought, I can say this movie is not as well detailed as 5 centimeters, but it does have a better consistency in plot direction and resolution that make it up. Which in overall, makes for a fun and engaging stable story.
People can be nitpick all they want, but at least this movie had a better production than most others that barely had any emotion.

I loved this anime. I will give it a solid 8 just because it has nice production value, a likeable cast, and rewatch potential.
At its best, it has some funny parts, some emotional tropes, some interesting dialogue especially for fellow artists.
In its worst, it's a comedy with a casual school story.
The rewatch quality is due to all much fun it is to watch this harem go on. Like, I seriously need someone to narrate this race to be the best girl.
Just when you think you have a SLIGHT idea about who the main girl is, the story turns and continues up until the end.
...
I don't even remember if it was included in this first season, but the second season continues in a similar race.
Overall, fun watch. The studio had a lot of fun with colors and certain tastes.
Utaha is best girl. You can visit my profile and fight me about it.

"with the face like he's carrying the future of japanese aviation" (sleeps average)
Kaze Tachinu is a solid 9. Proof that more modern Ghibli films have become very toned-down and safe compared to past films. And I don't mean that there is less amounts of questionable over-work, I mean that the newer digital films are playing more the safe side in the part of its story telling.
Kaze Tachinu has the Ghibli touch, very apparent it's cleaner digital form, but sadly the story as well as the characters have trouble holding the same interest factor.
Ghibli in the digital age has grown to only highlight the flaws more
...
than traditional animation. Where as past films could get away with blander characters and scenes through a higher production value, newer films reveal the lack of characters, the bland environments, and the mundane not for its good factors.
Just like all good things, even Ghiblis common staples have become to stick out, that it's more obvious when their production begins to show its wear and tear.
But enough rants about digital Ghibli, this was just a long way to say that this movie was a solid 9. It's okay. It's fine. It's nothing to cry about or make a huge fuss. In a way, that's sort of the problem. Kaze Tachinu aims to get away with a long narrative of a story rather than showing not telling. It's art style is masquerading the same wonder that traditional art has. It's characters, especially the main character is a weak actor even compared to more subtle films like Whisper of the Heart.
The entire film attempts to include dreamy scenes mixed with a "strong" poetic message in it's dialouge, but it's all so surface level when it's parred with a mundane execution of story telling. Yes, some scenes are amazing. Yes, some dialouge phrases are cool. No, it does not mean the movie as a whole has redemption.
The film goes for a realism approach, like moderns films like The Aviator, but sadly, there just isn't enough love in the story telling as much as it is just a "push the scene to the next, attempt to sprinkle some flare, and move on."
Which is a shame, because if you really wanted a good story, and one that has planes, then watch Porco Rosso.
If you want a good movie that's also realistic, you can watch Hotaru no Haka or Whisper of the Heart.
If you want to watch an actual poetic film, that's also light hearted, then watch Castle in the Sky.
But this ain't it. Sorry Ghibli. No one bats a 1000 and when it comes to digital, theres better movies they have made like even Ponyo lol.
This movie has all the right traits to be successful: the art budget, the story, the setting, but sadly it chose to be JUST okay, with JUST the usual tropes, with JUST the required amount of interest that after the first half the movie begins to show its plastic nails. Like, there were barely tears or emotion in the scenes that needed them.
Ironic that this is the film known for its profound one-liners. Sorry Ghibli, the ending line was wasted for this movie.
Miyazaki can blame disney, his own staff, his age, or anything else he wants. But the real responsibility is his own green light to want to make a casual digital film like this. Again, nothing really wrong with this film except that there's also nothing special either that makes Kaze Tachinu different than any other anime in the market.

Movie production is amazing, but its not enough to grant a passable reception when film also requires a good story + story telling. And yet, this movie exceeds at doing nothing special, even as an adaptation.
If you want a great fantasy story, look elsewhere. If you want an average story about fantasy, this is the plain film to watch. An 8 score is what this movie can receive as proof that if you take away the nice art, you are left with a boring story.
There were so many ways of making a fantasy story about small people interesting, but this isn't one of
...
them. The magical appearance of a woman in tall grass gives off a "fairy world" vibe, but the film as a whole is only somewhat of a fantasy.
Nothing more boring than watching a plain 2 hour story that's carried slowly on a modern graphical fidelity. Yawn. Modern anime shows do the same thing without the need of being so lack luster in its plot or pace.
The pros about this movie is that it has Ghibli brand to it. The Cons: if it wasn't a Gibli film most would rate this a 6 or 7 for its lackluster story and enjoyment.
Again, many ways this could have been better by utilizing the small world fantasy, but it was more tone-down than anything, you're better off watching Honey I shrunk the kids or Steven Spielberg's Strange Magic.
As far as story, the main cast could deserve better love as I'm sure whatever adaptation their from they have more character than what was portrayed in this film.
8 for mediocrity. A good film to watch when you're bored. A bad joke for being a Ghibli movie by the absurd mundane quality of needing modern graphics to carry the entire story appeal.
Plus, the characters were so flat, it was just dumb.
8/10 because its Ghibli.

Porco Rosso is without a doubt a masterpiece, and a huge under rated Ghibli film compared to more popular films like Kiki's delivery service, Ponyo, or even Princess Monokume.
Porco Rosso has the perfect touch of high quality animation, a clear hero-like tale, music, and wonder. All while being a silly satire of a Pig that flies a plane.
It's astonishing that some satire works like this, i.e. high school of the dead, can live up to have higher production in their casual attempts at showcasing touching moments than most other shows that actually try too hard.
But why exactly is this such a great movie? For
...
one, consistency. It's a fun story about a pig-pilot, bandits, flight battles, and a casablanca type of side romance.
No long and pointless scenes. No mystery behind "when is the plot going to get here." No need for absurd high production in stuff like windmills, the stitch of fabric, wrinkles, etc. The art is all through out this movie, well balanced to showcase the beautiful sea setting and atmosphere.
Plus the characters. I have no idea what that one reviewer is saying by the characters being too dull. Like, the characters are fine and it's a joy to actually see the cast more alive than in other movies. Even the workshop women were a bigger delight to watch than other characters in bigger movie roles. The characters in this movie all have their own personality without needing much backstory. It's never like, thats "the dumb one" or "the stooge" or "the tsundre." They're all individual in their own ways.
But the real thing that bothers me is how LITTLE appreciation this movie gets. Having been on MAL for a while, it's obvious most light hearted films earn a standard 7. Like, people see a pig in the preview and they just think "its watchable."
No, this is far better than a comedy. It's a complete standalone classic just Castle in the Sky. From start to end, Porcu Rosso is an amazing watch.
Most people would rate this as a 8. I would say its at least a 9 because of the production quality, going up to a 10 for having a complete story, a mixture of sound and animation, and a lovable cast. Like, I feel sorry for those that didn't love the climax for whatever reason, the art, or the hero ending.
10/10.

The reason I only gave this movie is a 9 is because it's sort of clickbait in both the "whimsical" look of the cover image, and the description of the movie itself paints the story differently than what it is: a mundane tale of a girl just going to school.
If the movie started out by what it attempts to achieve in the first place, then this movie would no doubt be a masterpiece.
Unfortunately, this is more about a movie about a young school girl, who has an ordinary school life, and nothing is happening in a plot. So, if I just wanted to watch
...
a 2 hour slice of life, I could just stop watching and go do my own homework.
But in honesty, this film is not going to get the same praise from me where other movies / animes do in their "everyday life" plots. Because, unlike other anime shows that have something interesting in the plot, this is just a stretched out slice of life with the interesting parts all going into the girl's project that she later begins working on.
Which is a HUGE, let down when her eventual "project" begins, because the story there is FAR better than the actual main story. So, that's a little bit to summarize this movie overall.
Not to mention, the movie description reads as this girl that writes "poetry" and encompasses themes about books, yet fellow artists and book lovers out there, let me say this is not the movie for us.
This is a bland movie in its worst, and a Ghibili touch of creativity at its best. It's a movie better left running in the background of some static tv.

Howls moving castle to me, is just exactly the right amount of Ghibli that I expect, therefore, it's definitely my favorite no question. Yes, there are flaws and many "what and why someone explain" moments in the plot, but overall, I like to admire this movie for it's series of events. The introduction, the whimsical first journey, not knowing what is real and what is happening, the joy of expressions, the likable cast, the deep themes about fighting, and even the whimsical showcases of magic.
By far, Howls moving castle is a film I can gloss over dumb plot holes and things that were never explained,
...
just for the sake of enjoyment to the story overall.
Many people say older films were the peak, but this movie really did showcase the best bringing together amazing animation production quality mixed in with 3d renders. It's a movie when 3d was being mastered in the industry. A peroid before our modern "everything is 3d so nothings really special."
Howls moving castle, is one of the films I would recommend new fans to watch first. Some say Spirited Away is the ONLY good film, but Spirited Away is almost "too surreal" to take seriously compared to Howls moving castle or Kikis delivery service or My neighbor Totoro.
Howls moving castle IS at best absurd, confusing, and a bit long to digest, but ONLY in its later half. Unlike Spirited Away which is just inconsistent through out.
But this is not a Spirited Away vs Howl review, this is simply to say Howls moving castle contains the best of what Ghibili attempts to do that to name just 1 Ghibili masterpiece, I would vote Howl's crazy story to Spirited Aways empty story, anytime.

Kiki is by far one of favorite characters from Ghibili movies. She is fun and nice, not spoiled. She is brave and capable of being weak. She is also very responsible. Plus, her character design just pops in every scene.
The pros about this movie is that it's definetly ONE of the best from Ghibili. Many people say this is the best, or this is great, but just like My neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away, this movie is very good to rewatch anytime. Simple, beautiful, whimsical.
Plus, for non anime fans, this movie has a more wonderful, toned-down feel to it's fantasy.
In fact, the cons
...
about this movie, to me, is that there just isn't enough fantasy compared to other movies like Howls moving Castle.
This movie is more a light-hearted film about a young witch who has a delivery service job. The real 10 rating in this film is PURELY in the enjoyment of just watching the outstanding production and light hearted story.
If you're looking for something with blood and guts....well look elsewhere.
Kiki's delivery service is a feel-good film. As in, it feels good to watch on rainy days so you better not ruin my vibe with your drama.
10/10.

I thought I'd write a review since I find it hard to rate any of these movies less than 10, but in the least I can explain what I like and don't like from them.
In this movie, the plot is pretty casual, a very dinsey-like natural film showcasing elements of woodlands, rivers, mountains. Not much thinking required except in trying to figure out what each character faction's motives are.
Like most Japanese-centered films, this movie showcases whimsical spiritual themes of nature and religion.
But anyway, enough reading the obvious, this movie has a lot of flat points that frankly left me disappointed for being "one of the
...
best" from Ghibli.
The first is that the story is all over the place with plenty of inconsistencies. The biggest in this is the absurd way almost nothing get's resolved in the end. Why did the main character save the town's leader rather than the forest? Why did he do all that just to help an evil woman who just wants to destroy the area? Why did the woman not die because of her actions? Why did someone not die because of their actions except the secondary side characters aka the spirits? Why did the guy who stole the spirit's head run off fighting for his prize only to assist the main character in the end? He didn't learn a lesson. Why did the evil town woman even trust that guy so much on their hunt for the head when she knew he was already devious?
The film obviously attempts to showcase the dangers of people messing with nature, and yet, everyone has plot armor from their actions except the forest spirit lol.
The biggest face palm was when the main character ran back to join the last fight.....by heading towards the ore town and not helping the wolves whom want peace. You would think after all the evil the town leader was doing, that maybe, at some point, the main chracter would be against her actions? But what does he do? He saves her from dying in the forest.
Man, the point when San was said to the main character "you were with them all along" was proof that everyone has a choice, and as "neutral" as the main character was believing himself to be, he did the most harm in the movie by helping people that just think about themselves and their poor old mining "town."
Absolutely dumb choices the more you rewatch this movie. Can't even respect the moral of the story when the plot is so dumb written.

Angel beats had no business being such a masterpiece. It's suppose to be a light comedy with action, but it will break you in so many levels the more you watch. It does this NOT as a super serious and complex flex, but through simple story telling. It's a show everyone has to watch at least once, not just to fill your anime list braggin points, but to be face to face with the deep existential poetry that this anime can remind you of.
This anime has me at odds between 9 or 10. 9 because of how casual the story is mix with comedy,
...
10 if I should ignore its weak points and award this show for its outstanding performance. It's so hard to debate this as someone that takes rating seriously. Can Angel Beats be a perfect 10 despite it's shallow and glossed over parts? Should it be a 10 for its overall consistency in theme? Can I watch this anime once without tearing up????
Anyways, Angel Beats is mocked for it's weak points today, but above all, the anime exceeds in performance that few shows can even match, all while still being a part comedy.
The characters, well, the main cast, is memorable. The story is interesting to see what is unfolding. The music, better than justin beiber. The art, a cringe for new anime fans, but overall, an art style on it's own in how it just looks nice.
Anyone that doesn't like this anime, needs a hug. And to be taped to a chair to finish the whole thing. Sub or dub, you will have to cry.
