Balanced mean score is achieved when ratings ascend and descent from the starting point of 5 with curves that mirror each others/deviate in similar manner. Basically positive-negative counter parts should be used more the closer they are to a 5/10. I.e. when 5/10 is the most used rating, 4 and 6 should be the next most used. After that pair, the next most common occurrence should be 7-3, and so on. You could technically do it with other ways as well. For example, 55% of everything is 5/10 and all the other ratings could take 5% portion each, but that would automatically look forced and artificial. Error margin gives the scale some more human value, which is why keeping the scale 100% in balance is not truly preferred.
