Haha. I'm a lazy bastard myself, so I can understand that. It's part of the reason why I barely play video games anymore: I feel terrible while doing so. All sorts of time wasted online, yet barely any progress in the areas that actually matter in my life (like schoolwork).

Danganronpa is great, though. At least it was until my emulator crashed and had me lose over an hour of progress. That was fun.

I would say that visual novels are much more rewarding than Chinese cartoons. In terms of emotional impact, I don't think I've experienced anything else on the level of Rewrite, MLA or Steins;Gate.

Yeah, wasn't really the biggest fan of that ending either. The whole ten-year-timeskip in the last third was kind of sudden from what I recall. And that wasn't much of a climax-- I never understood the tactic that Saki used to defeat the demon at the end. It just kind of... died.

I started playing Danganronpa on an emulator. Only an hour in and I can already tell that the anime adaptation is vastly inferior. Not really surprising though- VN adaptations are almost always shitty. Clannad and Steins;Gate might be the only exceptions.

Damn, yeah. You're sure working your way through SSY. It's difficult to get into the show at first (the infodump and massive amount of exposition in the first few episodes is a bit much) but it eventually develops into one of the most engaging and intelligent anime in years. Also, that atmosphere is intense.

Hah. I should find another terrible anime to mock review sometime. Reviewing seasonal anime really gets boring after a while given how mediocre most of it tends to be. Maybe I should focus less on the video games this summer and more on the silly Asian cartoons.

Yeah, the characterization was definitely my biggest problem with the first season. They develop significantly throughout the second season though (especially Madarame and Sasahara), which is always nice. And Ogiue is one of the best 2D girls around. Make sure to watch the OVA before the second season.

Jinrui, Katanagatari, Princess Tutu, Welcome to the NHK, Spirited Away and Haruhi are some of the first that come to mind after looking at your favorites. Also, if you're in the mood for torture (and some laughs), Psychic Wars is the way to go. Mars of Destruction has nothin' on that dreck.

Heh, good point. It's not like I can't just go back and witness Noire's (and Neptune's) glory all over again. There's barely anything else to do with my spare time, anyway. I haven't had an anime worth marathoning in ages now and visual novel translations are incredibly sparse.

I noticed that you just finished Genshiken. What did you think of it?
Veronin Jul 13, 2013 1:14 PM
Actually, this week gives me a good reason to go and finish Victory. I'm a terrible person and put it on-hold somewhere near the end of chapter 7. Mostly because I didn't want it to end. ;_;

Judging by the episode discussion, this is already shaping up to be another K-ON. Plenty of fans and a very vocal minority that feel compelled to voice how shit it is with every opportunity. Not that they really matter, though. The series has a very specific audience and the entire point of the anime is to advertise the games. I'd say it's been doing that pretty well considering how many new fans it gained from the episode.

Haha. I'm usually not too positive about fanservice in anime, but in this case? I like it. The anime is self-aware and humorous so it fits in just fine with the nature of the show. The games had plenty of it, anyway. Remember Uni's goddess form? Or the bath scene at the start of Victory? Delicious.

After watching again with subtitles, the story stuff doesn't seem as worrying. I just hope that the comedy and slice of life won't be pushed aside in favor of story, though. That was always the best part of the series.

This will easily be my favorite show this season. I hope I'll be able to wait another week for more Noire...
Veronin Jul 12, 2013 7:28 PM
Yeah, it was a bit serious in tone but luckily remained self-aware. I loved the dramatic scenes back in Victory because Neptune would always break the fourth wall and remark about how out-of-place it is. God, she has to be one of the best female protagonists out there.

So many cute moments throughout the episode. I liked how all the characters received a good amount of screentime (Nepgear and Uni included) while Neptune and Noire are still given the most focus. Also, the art was surprisingly good. Not as much as the games, of course, but for an anime it's pretty great.

I'm afraid that ED is never going to leave my head now.

So, just watched the episode as it aired.

I'm pleasantly surprised. Seems to be a great addition to the series, though I am a bit worried about how serious the tone of the episode was. Hopefully there's a bit less of that and more humor in the later episodes.

And Noire? Perfect as always.

GonzoLewd Jul 11, 2013 6:45 PM
Though the romantic confession scene was a bit melodramatic, being someone who can't stand melodrama, it was actually very heart warming given how Saori Hayami did a great job at putting some emotion into Ayase. She's so perfect. T_T

Oh, I forgot about all the fanart that will spawn from the anime. That pleases me. There really isn't a whole lot of fanart for the series at the moment- my Noire folder has barely a hundred pictures.

I'll probably take your advice. It's better to enjoy the anime than to argue with cretins repeatedly, especially if their argument is rooted solely in "it has cute girls so it suks lol". Hopefully I can at least exercise some restraint. I think I already lost my mind a few times from arguing about K-ON.
Veronin Jul 11, 2013 5:10 AM
Yep. I wonder how I'll deal with the inevitable plebeians hating on the greatest product ever created (Neptunia). Especially if they drag my lovely Noire into it. Hopefully they don't value their life too much?
Veronin Jul 11, 2013 4:34 AM
Ah, thanks for the recommendations. I'll try getting into Atelier soon.

As for the review scores, I've essentially just made it so that they adhere to the 'standard' scale-- that is, a 7 representing average. I use a five as the middle ground on my own list, but the average MAL user would see a five as meaning an anime is the worst thing ever or something.

And sadly the 'helpful' system is treated more as personal agreement, so a lot of people just have a kneejerk reaction and vote based on the score and the first few lines. I really don't like the current system. It encourages fanboys and discourages criticism.

Then you must be a shy person. lol It's okay, just take your time.
Veronin Jul 10, 2013 9:47 PM
Any other JRPGs you've found that provide a similar level of fun? I've thought about maybe getting into the Atelier series.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
