R.I.P

I would probably have enjoyed it more, if it wasn't for my horrible recollection of the endless eight.

No problems, anytime

That wouldn't make them intrinsically bad, they had a role they achieved said role. However was it the most creative or exciting way of using the characters? No, not really. Which is as you said, wasted potential, especially on the assistant. That's why the time-travel arc/ the endless eight-esque arc was was probably one of my least enjoyed arcs in the series. Both grandfather and the assistant got some backstory, however nothing much came of it.

So they served their role in the anime, but it wasn't the most creative way of approaching it. It was just efficient, which isn't that bad but makes for some wasted opportunities. I can't really complain, it's a reason why it won't get a 10/10, but I won't hate the anime over it. Watashi, the Faires and even Y were amazing characters. So I guess it's a bit too much to ask for all the characters to be loveable.

Both grandfather and Assistant did get some back story. The time travel arc tried to do both of them at the same time, however this caused for some loose ends. I agree not much was done with them. I felt they were completely overshadowed by the fairies and Watashi. They were just there for most of the time. The assistant did have some good moments, but the grandfather's role had a lot to be desired from.

I would consider them as more minor character as well. Even Y got a better back story and was more likeable.

It would've been around an 8 if it wasn't for my immense enjoyment and bias to Watashi as a character. :)

The reasoning for the 9 (well more 8) is the fact that as a social commentary it succeeded well, the subtlety of the jokes and references to human nature hasn't really been done before. (in the Japanese animated medium) The jokes weren't spoon-fed to us and each arc had a theme, whether it was making manga, or creating a nation each entailed some enticing dialogue and references; some arcs more than others.

The characters each served a vital role in this as well. The fairies and Watshi taking up the spotlight as catalyst for amazing witty dialogue and situations. The fairies being an amazing emulation of the failings of humans, how they can idolise almost anything, quick to follow trends, think of their own convenience, the destruction of forest for personal gain and the list goes on. Watashi being the amazing cynical commentators of events, in which she is presented as someone who accepts the fairies actions or is ignorant about the repercussions. Which makes for some amazing irony and makes the jokes less obvious (as I've mentioned before).

While it doesn't have an overlaying plot. But it does have great writing, dialogue, the scenes are done immaculately and the majority of the main characters are fleshed out well. The scenes are all meticulously put together, (I don't mean broadcast order) the arcs are for the most part interesting. The art provides a stark contrast to the dark humour behind it, making it for more effectiveness. I do believe it does deserve an above average score for not being part of the general generic anime, with recycled plot and characters. The 8 or 9 comes from the social commentary, and it's effectiveness.

Of course it being on my favourite list shows you how much I enjoyed it.

(The reason to be more lenient on the character department is that movies are usually focused almost entirely on the story.)
DraconisMarch Jan 15, 2013 7:43 PM
The only difference is that movies have less run time, so you generally have to be a little more lenient when judging how deep the characters are (at least for self-contained stories). Movie series are pretty much the same as shows, since they have a lot more time, so leniency isn't necessary.

For example, The Place Promised in Our Early Days has really good characters, but when you give a little leniency due to the fact that it's only 80 minutes long, they become amazing for the time frame they have.

Interpreting symbolism can be a very subjective act, though it still requires some ability to back up why you interpret a certain piece of symbolism a certain way.

However, there's a point where interpreting something as being symbolic or meaning a certain thing ends up being nothing more than making shit up, if the meaning that's "derived" from it is hilariously off-base.

It got more attention than 10 of my usual reviews combined.

Funnily enough, I now realize that both your favourites have nameless protagonists.

Sure, good luck. Make sure you give a poke when it's done.

Your Ergo Proxy review got me a but more curious about watching it, even if the review wasn't full of praise for it. But it brought up some good sides of it to look forward to and bad sides to be wary of.

And thanks for reading the overlengthy SAO thing.

I almost forgot to reply, but here I am. Just read your review. It developed into nice and smooth to read after the start which didn't really pick interest but rather was a turn off. It's probably needless to say, but with reviews the most important part is to get people read it and frankly nothing matters more than a well-though and witty start which picks the interest making people to read your review and give you feedback. Imo, the biggest problem with your review is there. Other is the form, paragraphing should be symmetrical, not identical but following a certain formula which makes review's overall appearance look smart. Splitting the contest into pros and cons is a working solution but it would work about as well when basing the paragraph structure into themes. Like firstly writing about the cons of plot, then pros of it, and after that move to other aspects and their pros and cons. Your solution makes it seem little messy and repetitive when you go back to the same subject just to analyze its other merits. As for your actual text part, I think it is well enough written showing your opinion without being lacking or containing useless and meaningless blabbering. So basically, I find your review helpful, but I wouldn't have read it if you hadn't asked me to, because the review doesn't pick interest for the reasons I mentioned. Just my opinion, but hopefully this helps you in some way.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
