(This can be changed since it's made after watching 5 episodes. But I hopefully think I would only do about new characters.)
WARNING: LOONNNG REVIEW!
TL;DR It's an alternative style of Oreimo that I have expected that it would gain half loves and half hates. I.E., it's fun for some and boring and stupid for others. However, they've got a cool production making it one of the should-consider-trying animes this season (and Anime of the Season just for me... Alright, no more self-ish opinions).
Alright, let me get this straight. This review, while I am one of those guys that think Sagiri is cute, will NOT be influenced
...
by her cuteness but rather, her personalities and every other aspects of the anime. This review is also influenced by the original novel in terms of comparisons and contrasts.
So, most of you should have already known that Eromanga Sensei is similar to Oreimo. In fact, except the story and Seiyuus of course, everything else is the same. Fushimi Tsukasa, check. A-1 Pictures, check. ClariS and TrySail, check. The main idea is close to Oreimo as well. So mark that on because comparisons will happen in the next paragraphs.
I'll skip the storytelling in 3, 2, 1, ...(Go read description)... There you go. So, in my opinion, this looks like they took an Oreimo main idea (Siblings interaction + extra girls and supporting characters) and recycled it, adding probably untrue novel creators' behind-the-scene idea to it (I mean, I don't really want to believe that most author and illustrator characters' personalities would exist in real-life light novel creators, except for Masamune that I approved his work cycle LOL.) But for some reason, I feel like the story and comedy aspects feel brighter than Oreimo. Like Eromanga Sensei is a 'light side' Slice of Life Comedy while Oreimo is a 'dark side' one. Anyway, I like the comedy in this. But again, because of falls the same page as Oreimo, most Oreimo watchers would at least like this anime while Oreimo haters would hate it so...
I forgot to mention that, like Oreimo, they respect the novel storylines very well. While some moments and aspects have been tweaked to speed up and maintain the flow, this is a good adaption from the novel. They follow the story really well and scene additions add good new point of views to the story. In fact, it did way better than this season's DAT one anime Xebec crapped the novel's script entirely... (You know the name.)
For the art, A-1 Pictures made a comeback after destroying Qualidea Code (which I think they used the budget on songs rather than the anime itself) and some other animes. Look at that, a good quality artwork. Although it might not be #1 this season but at least it's on the top of the list, at least I'm sure it beat DAT one anime from Xebec. I do like the illustrations of Eromanga Sensei and the details of the story art as well. It really gave me a good picture when I turn back to the novel. All in all, great job A-1! But let's hope they won't let us down in the second half of the season! (Oh, and yeah, the joystick!)
The sounds? Catchy. I can't still get that 'rush' tune (or something? I don't know, the one with trumpet) out of my head. Other tunes quite passed on making their appearances. The OP and ED, by ClariS and TrySail respectively (the same set as Oreimo!), are awesome. Hitorigoto express Sagiri's theme quite well while adrenaline!!! feels very fresh and happy. And both of them are catchy too. Maybe next Tsukasa-san's anime adaption could use these two acts again.
And here we go, let's go with the character. Again, while Sagiri is cute, I won't be judging by the fact that Sagiri is cute even that Sagiri is cute. First, Sagiri is a shut-in Hikkikomori who is a bit tsundere to her brother (I swear that I didn't know this while I was reading the novel, really! No, I actually had a little hint.). She's super annoying at sometimes, too. She appears to be super pervert too (she's 'Ero'manga Sensei, by the way!) Oh, she's a Grade 7, huh. Masamune is... eh... A crazy MC. He took Kyosuke's personality, but added way too much of sister obeying trait. He's even... I think I can say this, right guys? He's in love with Sagiri. He actually... Now it's a spoiler, so go watch it. Lrt's not forget he's a high-schooler and a novel writer (whose novels are illustrated by Eromanga Sensei/Sagiri) as well. Yamada Elf is a crazy Kuroneko. Megumi is a super-straightfoward Grade 7 class leader who... likes dicks. Tomoe, the bookstore girl is an... upgraded Manami. At least she's more attractive than Manami. And there's another girl who I can't mention until around episode 7-8 I think? I'll get back to this at the end of the season.
The thing is, again, it's a carbon copy of Oreimo, except for the MCs which, I think it's still close to Oreimo's. And I don't know if the characters goes well for the story. I 75%-ly think so, but you judge. At least, I found someone I like and hate (in a good manner). And the puns and comedy's are expressed well by the characters. The VAs did a great job, too. Sagiri's voice is awesome, although it's a bit shocking for me comparing to when she voices another character I knew.
PS. I see some character development coming. There's something behind the two MCs' current life. No more spoilers.
PPS. To avoid shit ending, Tsukasa decided to say that the two MCs are NOT BLOOD RELATED. So take the word 'incest' away from your head because that's not it. This didn't affect my review anyway.
Finally, the Enjoyment rating. I was an Oreimo fan (until the awful ending) and I had a great time watching this. It makes you smile and annoyed sometimes (in a positive way). While I don't think this surpasses Oreimo, a bit better but not much, but I still enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed Oreimo.
Final Verdict: 8/10
If you're a fan of Oreimo, watch it.
If you're a hate of Oreimo, don't watch it.
If you're neither, watch the first four episodes and judge.
