We'll start with the good. The soundtrack is fantastic - RADWIMPS is back. I can't determine yet if the music will have the same lasting power over me that the Your Name soundtrack did, but I certainly enjoyed it while watching.

Art is pretty good, as usual, setting/background pieces shine.

I enjoyed the cameos from Your Name.

The issues come from the story. I found the earlier parts to be enjoyable and in some ways, I think a lighter tone might have done this story well. But I digress...

So, our main character is on the run. I do not think it is really explained why in a way that truly resonated with me. His parents are never actually seen.

Another commenter compared this ending to "Life is Strange", and that is SO true. (spoilers for that too I guess). Choose between a town or your girlfriend. The reason it sort of works in Life is Strange is it is implied many if not all of the townspeople actually die. So it's a big weighty choice. In this movie - everyone tries to ensure the protagonist its "OKAY" that Tokyo will continue to sink under the constant rain. WHY? Even IF no one dies from accidents caused by the constant storms- homes, jobs, and property, in general, WILL BE DESTROYED. Why are people telling him this is FINE? I would be more okay with this if other characters were mad at him for his decision.

Also, no one has any "real" consequences with the altercation with the police. Yes, our MC has to go home to finish school, but the ADULT is clearly seen working again, with no mention of legal ramifications.

Here's the thing. As an experience, I can understand why people liked this movie. It's emotional, tugs on the heartstrings, presentation isn't anything special but is fine.

But as a story it's downright morally irresponsible. I say irresponsible carefully here - I don't believe the story or it's creators approached this in a way where they intended to be mishandle the topics they tackled - bullying, mental health, disabilities, and redemption.

But they took on too much and this leaves us with a love interest who's only character trait is "deaf", some very confusing messages on forgiveness and what people "deserve" who have wronged others, some very ... unlikable side characters....
