Alright, well that's good to hear about Shirobako! I still plan on watching it some day, though I wouldn't give it top priority. You mentioned the supposed lack of realism, and that makes me go, "Hmm.." I know it's anime, so you have to suspend some disbelief, but this is an anime set in the real world, with real problems met in the industry, so I personally would expect the show to be pretty darn realistic.. Oh well. I guess now I'll have to see for myself whenever I get to watching it--I'll make sure to tell you when I do!

I'm so glad to hear you started JoJo again! I understand your feelings on Dio--He is definitely a character MADE to get on your nerves. For me, it gradually became a thing where you love to hate him, haha. I am a total fan of Dio now, I can't lie.
JJBA is a series I really don't delve as deep into criticizing as others, since it paved the way for the genre and many future series. I mean, Phantom Blood was being written in the 80s, so a ton of the tropes described today had yet to become labeled "things" in the literature. But the device of Deus Ex Machina, like you mentioned, has been around for a very long time, it's true.. But still, I give it the "OK" on a lot of the goofy bits that appear cliche now, since they likely weren't back then.

I see you're onto Stardust Crusaders now--Let me know how you like it! I feel Part 2, Battle Tendency, will always be my favorite. I am much more partial to Hamon than the Stand powers. (And young Joseph.) Part 3 is still a great time, though!

Ah, thanks for letting me know about Daiya no Ace! Perhaps that was the reason I put it on hold for so long... I am slooowly making my way on it once again. Though your mention of the pacing solidifies my own feelings on it--So far I'd agree with you on the first half being more enjoyable. I'm certainly on the Sawamura train over anyone else, so that stinks he continues being left out of the spotlight. I'll keep with it, though!

So glad to hear you liked Death Parade! I agree that it was a breath of fresh air compared to recently watched series, and that it had a KICKASS opening episode. I really liked what was presented to the audience, regarding things like world-building and all the characters; we didn't get too much exposition, but just enough for the (unfortunately) short 12 episodes. MadHouse wins, once again. :) And I, too, loved that intense air hockey two-parter. So, so good. And bad, very bad (har har).

Hoho! I've been thinking of checking out Shirobako, as well! Mainly because of the hype I have witnessed on r/anime, much like you. Interesting of you to say that--I'm pretty skeptical myself of whether or not the immense praise is justified... So now I'll have to watch it soon and get back to you on it, to see if we hold the same opinion! Please do keep me updated on what you think of it!

Will do!

And awesome, sounds great! I thoroughly enjoyed them both! (Still got a ways to go on Daiya, though--Whenever you get a bit past episode 45, you should talk me into getting back to it!! I've just been slackin'. I really liked what I had seen.)

And thank YOU! Love talking and suggesting with ya!
Toasted-Reason Mar 29, 2015 5:46 PM
You nailed it, yes--By this point in time, I tend to lean more toward an objective viewing, simply because of how much I've seen. It's not intentional, but since I've witnessed so much of 'this' or 'that' trope, character type, etc. in anime by now, that's what usually happens. Exactly why I believe my opinion of it would have been different, had I watched it early on. :)

And yeah, seriously though! I have no idea why the heck AnoHana would be in such low quality, even now. haha, Oh well. I toughed through it, and don't hold any memories of the quality being an issue after I got over it. I mean, there used to be ONLY SD available for watching anime online! Nuts.

On DBZ, gotcha. Well it's certainly on my radar now, but not necessarily a pressing matter (just since it's so well-known and there is a good bit to watch). Hopefully I will get some time to fly through it, or something! Or maybe I'll just have to slowly make progress. Either way, I will get to it some day!

Yeah, I don't know about Code Geass. I just.. couldn't get invested in anything that was going on. I feel that things were only happening for the SAKE of them happening. We're given no explanations to many of the events, simply because Lelouch is so OP--You don't NEED an explanation when the MC is so kool!

My memory's a bit hazy by now, but I remember several things that put me off more than others. One is V2. Seriously, what the fuck? V2 legitimately ONLY appeared at the CLIMAX of everything going on, just so that Suzaku could learn Zero's true identity. This alien loli had no prior appearances, whatsoever. And yet she has a complete grasp of the situation, and knows the interpersonal drama going on between these high school students? Hmm. There wasn't even any foreshadowing of her or anything, which would have made it more acceptable. The only "explanation" you can infer from this is "Oh. Well V2 knows all this because of her magic Geass power." But no. That does not slide, haha. She was not even a character until that moment.

Another thing that bugged me was how much of a boring, broken record Suzaku was. "Your ways are wrong!" "These methods are wrong!" "This is wrong!!". The repetition was just too much for me, and he also never offered any reasoning as to why he felt these things were so, so wrong. I mean, yes, "I want to change the system from the inside" was another sentiment of Suzaku we heard plenty of times, and he also had a shitty thing happen to him as a child. But this was it, the extent of his character. No depth, and no growth. (And you're telling me an 8 year-old can stab a large, grown man a single time, and kill him? Hm.) One of my favorite moments with Suzaku was when there was somehow a perfectly set-up pendulum bomb strapped above Nunnally's head and, get this, Suzaku claimed he dismantled the bomb by JUMPING WITH THE SAME MOMENTUM the pendulum had! And as he was falling at the utmost perfect speed, he cut the correct wire! hehe

One more: Orange. This poor guy was the headline butt-monkey of Code Geass. He got his shit handed to him so many times, and for WHATEVER reason (read: no reason), he was continuously brought back to face someone/Zero for a fraction of a second, only to be blown away again. He should have died early on, and yet at the climax of it all, he is thrown back into the fray, by some scientists that implanted some crazy high-tech materials into his body?? And he maybe had some other conscious in his mind and was going mad with revenge/power??? I honestly don't even know what happened there. There was absolutely NO specification as to why Orange was brought back, or how and why he got this ridiculous bio-upgrade. We know the only reason he was made "significant" again was to give C2 a reason to sacrifice herself for Lelouch at the end of the season.

Much of it just came off as unnecessary melodrama, and was not executed in an effective manner (like the entire existence of Shirley). We received little-to-no "reason" to care for the characters. You should care for Lelouch because he has a big-time goal of genocide, and yet also wants to protect some kids he cares for. You should care for Nunnally because, c'mon, she's blind AND in a wheelchair! You'd be heartless not to care for her! I just felt there was a rampant lack of "substance" everywhere in the story. Everything just seemed so flat to me.

OK, last point, I know this is getting lengthy. For me, I dare say that the majority of events that occurred were predictable. I can think of one instance where I was surprised. This is a huge reason why I believe my first impression of this series would have been WORLDS different, had I watched it in my early anime years in middle school.

OK, I think I'm done. PLEASE feel free to tell me, "No, you've got this all wrong, for these reasons...", or something. It goes without saying--but since I took such a harsh tone against the series--these are all my opinions. I will not shit on people who love Code Geass. I just did not have a very enjoyable time with it, and those were some of my major reasons.

-------------------------------

Alright, I am super sorry about how long my reply to your CG question got. I wanted to answer seriously and somewhat in-depth, because I know you gave it a high rating, and I didn't want to give an answer like, "lol idk i just didnt like it".

ANYWAY, about AnoHana, I gotcha. That makes sense. If you get Crunchyroll where you are, though, they at least have it there. It's in pretty low quality, but it is better than some I have seen. (I wonder why that is? There must be a Blu-Ray release by now, I would think.)

And, haha! Yes, it's almost unheard of, but true--I have not seen the entirety of anything DB/DBZ! I have seen some episodes spread out as a child, and by being a part of the anime community for so long, I do know the majority of reoccurring characters' names. But yeah, I should probably get on that, huh? I'll probably do what you suggest and just watch Kai, since that's just a remastered version of Z, right? What makes you recommend going back to Z for the last chunk of episodes?
Toasted-Reason Mar 28, 2015 12:18 AM
Nah, don't worry about how many series you've seen! Like you said, it just makes it a little bit more difficult for you to grab suggestions, is all. But it's no big deal. :)

Oh, Golden Time! I have heard good things about it. I did really enjoy Toradora! as you said, so I'm sure I'll like this one. All I know about it is that it takes place in a college setting, and one of the MCs has a super catchy name--Tada Banri. Getting a direct suggestion from a pal certainly boosts it up my plan-to-watch list! (Not sure if you saw, but soon after we offered our first suggestions to each other, I went and watched the first season of Code Geass! It was a moderately enjoyable ride; I feel like I seriously missed out on the hype not watching it back in middle school like most of the anime-viewers of our generation did.)

And I totally agree with you about Second Barrage. Now I feel kinda bad for not saying anything about it beforehand (lol), but I didn't want to accidentally sway you in a certain way before you watched it for yourself.

Let's see.. suggestions. Hmm. Diamond no Ace is a good sports series, yup. I am ridiculously behind right now, but from the chunk of episodes I've watched, it has some of the best art for a baseball series I've ever seen. The art style is just so.. crisp, and solid. Really pleasing character designs, in my opinion. Because there are so many episodes, however, it does suffer a bit from a slow start. I don't remember that being an issue for me when I started it, though. Just giving you a heads up!

As for some of my own suggestions, hm. I see Death Parade has been put on your PTW, so that's good. Definitely recommend that. Another one would be AnoHana (it's got a long full name), for some drama/slice of life--With a side of feels. Oh! Some fun ones are Little Witch Academia (only a single episode long), and Shingeki no Bahamut, which has a fantasy setting (dragons, mythical creatures, magic spells...). If those aren't really your thing, though, that's OK! Just let me know. We're kind of on the in-between of compatibility, so I'm not quite sure yet of your tastes!

Oh, and don't feel pressured about watching those movies, or anything! They were just some things I tossed out there. :) Sorry for the extra long message
Toasted-Reason Mar 26, 2015 9:20 PM
Yo! Just checkin in to say hey--I see that you watched both seasons of Black Lagoon. How'd you like it? I mean, I can see the scores you gave it, but I'm curious to hear it in your own words!

Personally, I had a great time with season 1. It was kind of a breath of fresh, gun-powdered air compared to things I had watched recently. Season 2, on the other hand, was a total flop in contrast to the first. I still had an "OK" time watching it, but that was it. Just a bit above average. For me, it was those twins that set the (wrong) mood for the rest of the series. It added an obscure, "spoopy" element that had never been introduced in the series until that point. It seriously caught me off guard, and left a sour taste in my mouth. I feel that affected how I viewed the rest of the season.

Opinions, opinions, though. I'd like to know how you felt about season 2, especially, since I have yet to discuss this series with anyone. I am unsure if my impression of it is the norm.
And one last thing--Did you decide on subs or dubs?
Toasted-Reason Feb 25, 2015 12:42 PM
Let's see... For movies, I'd say both AKIRA and Redline are musts. I adore them, personally. Both action-packed, with one being a classic, based in the future with some high-tech and crazy-supernatural stuff going on (AKIRA), and the other based on the raddest racing tournament in the whole universe (Redline). Also, Redline was all hand-drawn and took 7 years to complete. There's a lot of love put into that film.

As for series, I'll toss a suggestion for Black Lagoon out there. Also hella action-packed, and has a similar atmosphere to Western films here. In "reality", most of the characters actually speak English, but of course they're speaking Japanese for the sake of, well, speaking Japanese and making it easier for the audience.
Black Lagoon also possesses one of the few acceptable (and really quite good) English dubs within the anime community, since it goes so well with the setting and characters. I enjoyed both the subs and dubs, and I am one of "those people" who say subs over dubs any day.
Toasted-Reason Feb 24, 2015 9:31 PM
No need to apologize at all! This is what discussion is about!
I'm certainly not saying I'll never give Nisekoi a chance!

Let me know whenever you may start up Death Parade, and thanks for the additional suggestions! I'll tell ya man, Code Geass has been on my mental PTW list for about 6 years now. Haha, no joke. I need to get on that!
That's interesting you say the second season isn't as good as the first--I feel it's the 2nd season that everyone raves about and rates a 10. Hmhm! Now I feel even more inclined to watch, to see for myself.
After all these years, I'm proud to say I've successfully avoided spoilers and know nothing about the series. Only Nina and Table-kun. And Pizza Hut.

And yeah, I've actually thought about getting around to watching Kiseijuu, to see how it is more "modernized". (Though I did thoroughly enjoy the older style of the manga!) Maybe I'll show a friend and can watch it along with them. It's just that I read it pretty recently, so kinda wanna wait again before watching it; maybe I'll have forgotten some things by then, or something.

And yes--Praise be MadHouse.
Toasted-Reason Feb 24, 2015 6:29 PM
Heya! I'm actually not so big on the harem setting... Though I have heard Nisekoi should be treated more like a comedy, rather than a romance, I don't like how dense I hear Raku to be... Haha. (Just personal preference! I'm sure it has some great, hilarious parts!)
I am also still pretty upset about Raku beating DIO in the Best Guy Contest, not gonna lie.
From what I have seen/heard of, though, I think I would be all for Chitoge.

And I'm actually on a re-watch of HxH right now, and am due for my annual re-watch of FMA: B! Neat stuff.

As for a quick suggestion, hmm... Maybe Death Parade, as it's something on my mind since it's currently airing. Good pacing and character-building. Interesting concept, consistent (good) quality, each episode stands well on its own, bringing a lot to the table. (So far, anyway.) If you do decide to pick it up, make sure to watch the OVA "Death Billiards", which serves as a sort of prologue to the series airing now. :)

(I don't know if I would call Death Parade a must-see, but it's what first came to mind. I'll let you know if I think you should really watch a certain series!)
Toasted-Reason Feb 23, 2015 11:26 PM
Yo--I saw you mention on r/anime that Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Hunter x Hunter are your top two series. Came here to check out your MAL and to say hey what's up, me too!

Howdy again! Just wanted to say thanks for the add, hope to converse some more with you on different shows!
I sent you an invite to a club I've been a member of since joining the site (Social Watchers of Anime)... It's alot of fun; most folks within spend alot of time debating shows, and we actually do a group viewing every so often (Currently watching GitS and Monster, as a club).
Check us out if you're interested! Have a good one!
Nikki_Z Nov 29, 2014 8:34 PM
It's certainly gaining in popularity, but to call it "mainstream" is a bit counterintuitive.
KakeruKairu4 Nov 28, 2014 7:28 PM
I follow you absolutely, and thanks for giving an honest dissertation on the show. So many people use the review section to campaign or bash unfettered, but you actually used it for it purpose! Shocking, I know!

Btw I can totally sympathize with having to finish it; happens to me all the time... "God, this is crap! Only 4 episodes to go, screw it, let's do it!"
Zadion Nov 18, 2014 12:44 AM
I quite agree with your School Days review. The only problem I had with it was the random and half-assed "slice of life" moments or generic, unfunny comedy that took up more time than was necessary in some of the middle episodes.

Also, I don't think Kotonoha is hate-worthy. I truly pitied her, in fact.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
