A sweet out of 10 rating system, yo! I prefer the out of 5 system personally; so here would be my convergence of such a system: (10=5 because they're the cream of the crop), (9, 8=4), (7, 6=3 because 3 usually reflects slightly above average), (5-3=2, get it?), (2, 1=1).
As a preface, this is my personal preference for which styles of anime I enjoy. I know these terms are supposed to be exclusive to manga, but seeing as how most anime is based off of a manga, I figure the same rule should innately follow for anime. I actively seek out the first two, whereas the second two I more often end up watching by some coincidence.
1.) Josei
2.) Seinen
3.) Shonen
4.) Shojo
Also, I don't have any preferences for certain genres (other than that I tend to prefer dark/dramatic story-lines and character studies), but there are a handful of genres I don't seek out, and am basically never inclined to watch. I'll see them on occasion, but I'm just not interested in them on the whole.
1.) Sports
2.) Magical Girl/Cute Girl Anime
3.) Horror (not big on jump scares, and blood and gore for the sake of shock value is an overused gimmick I have no patience for)
4.) "Feels" Anime (don't usually appreciate how contrived they tend to be)
5.) Fan Service Anime (the content is usually offensive on top of getting in the way of the narrative, but then again, I truly believe there is a fan service anime in all of us)
And now for the juicy bits! I appreciate anime as an aesthetically compelling form of media. I try to give a fair rating based on the project in it's entirety. When I watch anything, I am very attentive not just to the story and characters, but the music, the art direction, the shot selection, animation, style and presentation, and it's overall ability to convey a compelling narrative. Deep themes are always a bonus, but a basic story done right can be equally effective.
But seriously folks, my rating is all about how well the anime accomplishes what it sets out to do, how complete the overall experience is, and how that compares with others of it's kind.
10.) Masterful. You need to be perfect to get this score. If anyone has a flaw with it, I am fully confident I can provide an interesting counter to explain why the flaws only contribute to some larger interpretation to be found. I do not believe that nothing is perfect; talk about depressing. And to all those anime that decide to flip the hell out in the last 3-5 minutes of the show, you don't get this score. Sorry; make a better ending next time.
9.) Phenomenal. In most respects as good as a 10, but I like my number of 10's to be small. 10's earn their spot by having an ace in the whole. This could be in the form of a deep theme, romantic nostalgia, something valuable to say on the nature of humanity, ect. 9's won't have that ace quite as powerfully as the 10.
8.) Brilliant. 8's are great animes but there is probably some facet of it that wasn't as well conveyed as it could have been. Character development and motivations may be lacking in a few places, or there might be an episode or two that fail to contribute to the series as a cohesive whole. Also if the anime's overall meaning was either under resolved, a bit too vague to fully grasp, or too familiar to leave a long lasting impact found in 9's and 10's, it could end up here.
7.) Solid. Worth watching. It might not capitalize on enough opportunities, play it safe, or is otherwise divided in it's narrative focus. There might also be a small number of hiccups ranging from a few uninspired characters, underdeveloped ideas, or perhaps a less than stellar script, music, or visual design. Update: I'm noticing a trend. 7's typically have one annoying thing that persistently bothers me throughout the experience. So there's that.
6.) Passable. This is where guilty pleasures end up. They're not great anime, but if you like what I like, you might have a good time. The good outweighs the bad here, if just barely.
5.) Average. Like a sip of lukewarm water on a summer's day. Nothing great, nothing terrible.
4.) Sucks. It might have some redeeming element to it; a character, a good score, a compelling idea, or something else to enjoy. The good parts in this anime won't exceed much more than 1 or 2 things.
3.) Crap. It might have a decent idea or two somewhere in the mix, but that aspect is unable to shine, buried deep in the steaming pile of crappy, boring, or otherwise self-indulgent ideas.
2.) Dreadful. It's god-awful on every level and a complete waste of time.
1.) Piece of shit anime that made me sick to my stomach to watch. This stuff is just downright offensive, and I imagine that the majority to get this score are the ones that have a complete disregard for human life. This is an exclusive score that can only be earned if I can't make it past a single episode.
Lastly, I reserve my 10 Favorites List on MAL to be exclusive to TV series. I do have favorite Anime movies, such as Wolf Children and Akira, but I am not allowing movies on the favorite's list simply because I don't consider them to be a fair comparison.
With that said, check it frog!
