Made in Abyss
add

Made in Abyss successfully captures the essence of human desire and its infatuation with the impossible, of stringing this infatuation with the dark realities of our world, creating a frightful god-like embodiment of the abyss, one that steers from the "cutesy" appeal of the younger character cast. Similarly, Madoka Magica nails this stringing of "dark" elements in an intriguing as well as meaningful way that dives beyond superficial lengths to really focus our attention on what it truly means to have hope, of what it means to despair. Both shows are awesome so don't let the "cutesy" little "magical girl" aspect steer you from witnessing something written by Gen Urobuchi. As a side note, Shaft produced Madoka Magica so it's definitely pleasing to the eye. Also, they both start with an "M"!

Steins;Gate

Although inherently different in some respects, the parallel I'm drawing between the popular and beloved time travel phenomenon with this older and likewise beloved movie are the themes of self-identity, of its degradation following distressing circumstances, of trauma and its ability to blur our vision of reality, distorting the very senses that leave us on the brink of sanity, and of the prevalent idea that upon losing one's sense of self, upon discovering that "other" voice in the back of your heart, you begin to fall into what seems like a bottomless pit, leaving you to question "is this the real me?"

Jujutsu Kaisen

This should be an obvious recommendation, after all, Jujustu Kaisen, although I like it much more than Naruto, is essentially a copy & paste of the former. Regardless, the animation in Jujustu is stunning, the power system is interesting, and the fight scenes are impeccable. Personally, battle shounen is one of lesser liked genres, yet I still find this show entertaining and enjoyable to watch.

Sayonara no Asa ni Yakusoku no Hana wo Kazarou

The parallel I'm drawing between these two is the theme of coming of age. Certain Violet episodes, particularly the one with the mom sending letters to her daughter, share certain aspects to the overall progression of the relationship between Ariel (son) and Maquia (mother). Although I'm not a fan of the fantasy-driven world in Sayonara, the end of the movie was heartbreaking nonetheless.

Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai
add

Personally, I hate Bunny Girl Senpai but that's besides the point. The parallel I'm drawing here is that both of these anime rely on short arcs wherein a new character is introduced, fleshed-out, and ultimately tied into the main "plot" of the show. If you dislike fan service, I don't recommend the monogatari series. Personally, I don't like fan service, however, for some reason, it works perfectly in this series (besides the movies), creating a comical atmosphere founded upon dialogue. Give it a shot!

Tenki no Ko

Yes, this is quite obvious since both were written by our beloved Makoto Shinkai. In my opinion, "Your Name" outclasses "Weathering with You" since the latter has several plot holes, somewhat of a disturbing message (sacrifice), and an immature and irresponsible main character. HOWEVER, regardless it is still an amazing watch as the animation is breathtaking! Anyways, if you haven't watched either I strongly recommend. (Also, as a side note, watch "I want to eat your pancreas" if you haven't already:) )

Shingeki no Kyojin Season 3 Part 2
add

Now, before I start, let me put a disclaimer that the shows are inherently different. However, if you love the adrenaline-rushing fight scenes in AOT, I am positive that Vinland Saga will NOT let you down in those regards. Vinland Saga has superb animation and a deep message that lies underneath the badass fighting, tying in interesting perspectives on religion and what it means to be a "true warrior." Also, Vikings!

Although the animation is far superior in "Your Name," "I Want to Eat Your Pancreas" creates an amazing story about two individuals who learn from each other and grow together. The latter has more of a romantic approach, however, "love" simply cannot describe the relationship between our two main characters. Both are great and truly worth the watch! (Also the first anime that ever made me cry as I'm not the most emotional person)

Steins;gate is infinitely times better so if you liked Erased this will be amazing. Both revolve around time travel, yet only truly captures the essence of it.
