Only dropping this review as a bookmark to when the series ends and the disappointment reels in and the shiny gloss comes off. This is a movie stretched thin and let's face it if the B-plot started halfway through the movie would be half as long.
The shounen stuff does get annoying after a while. Tanjiro's scream felt unnecessary, the comedy is a bit off tone and the scope creep is becoming apparent. I'd love to comment on this but I'd just be spoiling the manga at this point.
The music was great if you have a keen ear you probably heard some of the creative
...
decisions such as the traditional Japanese vocal. The high pitched phrases are often overused and it's very promising to see something done differently. In this case, it was passed through what I assume was a phone filter and then heavily autotuned to match the hard power chords. While i thought this was awesome they go and slap some hard piano on top and vocals, which are okay but you throw in the melancholic strings and its generic all of a sudden. Awesome music just poor direction i guess.
From here it's just philosophical, like a previous review mentioned do sky-high sales mean something is good and vice versa. I like this premise but it just scratches the surface of what the industry is and isn't and what this becomes in the backdrop of such a unique culture. I'd like to break that down but that's too much work I'm not a youtuber.
TL: DR Movie okay, soundtrack generic and seeds of disappointment for later instalments confirmed.

A bit of an early review, but a necessary one as far as I am concerned. Anime as a medium is notorious for its poor handling of imperialism (which is ironic), oppression and generally the science in science fiction. Often this isn’t a problem as the story often more than makes up for it.
This is however not the case here and I’d be hard-pressed to praise this on any merits other than animation and characterization. Regardless I think it's a shame because there is so much potential here for an exploration of war, societies part in war (check the role of upper-class households in Nazi
...
Germany) and the dehumanization of others in order to use them without societal guilt (check Wernher von Braun's use of Jews in his rocket research).
A good example of how to explore these ideas is by playing with the layer of abstraction the public has about the war, which can later be broken down through acts of terrorism which would then solidify the horrors of war to the same people who funded and supported the war albeit ignorantly. Then exploring whether they are guilty of the atrocities by way of ignorance. I don't know if this is explored in the Light Novel but my guess is it's not.
In respect to the fiction, the energy required to man some of the technologies here makes me wonder why there isn't a cascade of its uses elsewhere, especially in Area 86. Otherwise, no one really asks why spiral energy is a thing in Gurren Lagann so it's not a big deal. I hope weapon manufacturing is explored as you can guess it's not the white-haired aristocracy that smelt iron and lead.
Racial themes are poorly handled in my opinion. Discrimination is incredibly intricate and 'buta' or pig just doesn't cut it (check the relationship between antisemitism and globalism). Patriotism is fine but this setting tells me what we see is nationalism (a nationalist loves his country and is proud of his country NO MATTER WHAT IT DOES) and with that should come a cult-like adoration of the systems in place. This is seen in uniforms, stature, discourse and classism.
Making a full production of Anime is incredibly difficult even for the most mediocre of shows and it's almost painful to criticise a full production such as this. But I just had to say something about this show and its cheap almost 'weeb' depiction of some serious topics that are eerily relevant today.
Some of the tropes are a warm welcome like ‘eggs’ and others I think we could do without for example the Royalty/Upperclassmen being modelled after British Aristocracy.
The loner gifted kid with a stiff demeanour i.e Mikazuki Augus (Iron-Blooded Orphans) and Hei(Darker than Black), are just lost on me, overpromised and underdelivered every single time.

Hello there, as always watch something before anyone tells you anything!
That being said, the mini-series was fine(don't let the other review tell you otherwise) but the feeling that there is still a hell lot more to offer was almost nauseating. If you've read any the reviews here you'll know that guys are pleased and are giving it a high score with the expectation that the manga will swoop in, sell big, explain things and more episodes will come our way.
Woe unto thee who thinks the manga is going to solve any issues you may have had the show. Let me just list a few
...
down.
- The stoic stand in for Byakuya, who actually has an emotional side
- The tsundere stand in for Renji,
- The easy-going old-man that is far stronger than anyone else ever thought.
- The references to past events that won't be covered
- The references to a league of people or creatures who have some sort of power level stratification
- Unexplained objects that do nothing but will somehow save the day
- and many many more
These are just some of the issues covered by SuperEyepatchWolf who has a great video addressing some of the issues he had with Bleach and the realization that that ugly head is rearing itself again just makes me depressed.
Unfortunately, just try to think about what happens in the community when someone hasn't watched or played or read something from this split story. Stratification is what happens. There will be people who know the full story and those who don't. People will gate-keep. Some people will become outsiders.
This at-least is my explanation why other reviews here start will full-fledged anime fans apologizing for not having read Bleach. Why is that a thing?
We shape the industry because we are the clients, so the ugly head is not an ugly head. It's a mirror that shows me what the community is. Learn to distance oneself from the parasocial relationships one forms with characters, studios, staff, authors and artists/illustrators. Love them by all means but don't lie to yourself they have your best interests in mind.

Let me keep your time short, go watch the movie then come back.
Now that you have, the frothing pot of art, music and contrived shit that is this universe fills me with sadness and dread. Dread for the industry that will, honestly not surprising, want to make a season of anime but make a movie out of it then stuff it with suicide sheep type music with no room for emotion.
There is a lot I want to say about the representation of oppressed people and the justification of their oppression by a tall, blonde, (probably blue-eyed) leader who brought his country from "ruin" but I
...
won't. I love anime-sludge like anyone else, but I waited too long and was influenced too much by a community that is all colour grading and no dialogue.
If you don't see it, it's okay, what's the point? Enjoy the film, enjoy life.

I know this is a bit prudent but i really enjoyed this read.
If you are a fan of good slice of life paired with fantastic art then this is a must read, its barely trudging along, there isnt even a character list when im writing this, but i can really see this becoming really popular with the laid back part of the community.
The story is very mature and the characters are not 'mysteriously' exempt from actual life problems; a future, money and relatives.
I find the troupe's/cliches that are played out are done well and moderately, for example; the granny being small and
...
frail which is done well because she isn't particulary exempt from work and hardships and the old classic of the family having a large meiji style house but it isn't occupied which then resolved by the sad fact that realtives become distant when problems arise.
