So this is an adaptation of a Key Visual Novel, Key of which are known for mostly Jun Maeda's works - Kanon, AIR, Clannad, Little Busters!, Angel Beats!, Charlotte, The Day I Became A God, Heaven Burns Red. This is not one of those, it is primarily written by Nijima Yu known for the VN Hatsuyuki Sakura and Kai who is a long time writer at Key and did routes in works like AIR and Clannad etc.
First off this is a VN with a lot of mystery elements don't expect things to be explained to you before they happen, everything makes sense eventually (Ao's route
...
specifically explains a lot). You're also not chucked into some insane story right off the bat, Key always wants you to care about the characters normal daily lives before that stuff happens so when it does it hurts.
So far it's mostly been true to the VN, prologue took 2 episodes and the stuff in Kamome's arc seems to be cutting some of the more mundane stuff (searching for the Key's takes about a week in the VN) in favor of adapting the best scenes in the route faithfully, which I hope and feel like they will commit to with the other girls. I have no doubt the true end will be done almost perfectly as that is the best part of all their other adaptations.
It also seems to have some plot elements of Reflection Blue (which added routes for side heroines, some OSTs and a new character as well as updating the ending) which is definitely the right choice with how the ending plays out. Although the side heroine routes most likely aren't going to be adapted I hope we get a Little Busters! EX situation or even like Tomoyo and Kyou OVAs in Clannad
But really even the 10/10 routes in the VN don't even come close to Alka and Pocket (the VN true routes), do not drop this until you finish those final 2 routes/arcs, they can easily make this anime of the decade
So if this adaptation continues the quality that it has up until this point will this reach the heights of Clannad as one of the highest rated drama anime? Well no but the VN it is the 2nd best piece of media I've ever consumed behind Clannad so yeah this is a much watch if the true end is done even half as good as the VN.
Oh yeah visual are really nice and the OST (which is just the VNs) is perfection

6.79 as of writing this, and many people claim this to be a 2 or 3/10. To that I say please for the love of god watch something actually bad how in the fuck is this one of the worst things you've watched. I saw someone say the music was annoying, listen to some actually bad music please what is wrong with you. Also no in no world is Charlotte sadder than this, and I love Charlotte. There are much worse anime with higher ratings, even ones I like that do not deserve a higher rating then this.
Ok with that out the way, The Day
...
I Became a God is currently the latest anime written by Jun Maeda and was so hated that the internet bullied out off writing anime, I was putting this off for a bit as I've been going through all of Key's visual novels and (good) anime adaptations/originals but as it turns out my suspicions I had before watching this were right, it's grossly over hated. The structure is the same as most Key titles but that's not a fault of writing more so of the "nakige" genre, start off comedic and get us to know the characters, admittedly Charlotte and Angels Beats! especially had stronger comedy but the Mahjong episode made up for that and the rest of the first half is still enjoyable plus I like Izanami. This isn't a case like Angel Beats! or Charlotte where I could see the branching routes from Maeda's visual novel writing just being used as arcs instead, episode 5 is set up in episode 1 and manages to get the only other sad moment outside the main arc where Angel Beats! had about 4 or 5 throughout and Charlotte has a few but really only one ever got me to even slightly cry, this got me at least 5 separate times during the last arc. What I found most interesting was how much of Maeda's other work I could see in this - the setting of the last few episodes was similar to Kanon, that scene in ep12 is nearly the same as the beach scene in AIR (hell I'd say this is the closes anime to AIR since it was made), Izanami is just Kotomi, the ep9 ED reminding me of 'Regret' from Little Busters!, the hacker stuff from Angel Beats! and some things from ep10 and Charlotte's presentation.
Is lacking in a random band having great songs but Natsu Nagi makes up for that, the OP and EDs are great and the rest of the soundtrack ranges from solid to wouldn't be out of place in Clannad (which is 10/10)
The one criticism I will agree with is that no this is not the saddest anime, it's not even the saddest Maeda work when you have Clannad After Story, or if we want to talk about darkest then AIR easily takes that with certain scenes in Kano's route - the backstory of Tohnos and both Summer and AIR routes endings, also Heaven Burns Red is in english now. I will say though in terms of anime originals he's made it's just behind Angel Beats! in terms of sadness. This also isn't even close to his worst work, just look at the tags for things that had to be in MOON. cause only eroge sold at the time on vndb, or even ONE. (which thankfully has an a lot better remake).
[spoilers from now on, some [major] for Clannad AS, AIR and Your Lie in April as well]
But anyway onto a criticism that kind of pisses me off, the representation of disabled people - I'm just going to say my interpretation of Hina losing the supercomputer is that it's a convenient way to be able to bring in the Dad without making it like he just abandoned her and have Hina be active so we can get attached to the character. I think the main message that is on display is that a person is still who they are if they do become disabled or are straight up lobotomized like Hina, people are quick to point out Youta being pushy especially with Hina's reactions to it but 1. He's on a time limit and 2. This fucking bitch over here who takes care of Hina constantly saying that Youta was speaking to a computer not the real Hina exists (and is very dismissive off him despite the fact he was actually her friend(/boyfriend I guess)), but if we apply my interpretation of the message that logic becomes 'she was like that before she was disabled, she's different now cause of disability, she's not the same person' which yeah is not good. I like that Hina's memory is still for the most part lost at the end but the fact she loved Youta (and everyone else) remains cause it's feeling not memory and the things she wants to do are still the same despite now having that disability. Also the foreshadowing on the drawings I saw from a mile away, people saying that is spinning it in dumb way are like the people who say Clannad's ending was bad cause they didn't pay any attention to the supernatural elements or Kotomi and Fuko. But yeah my main take away from the disabled part was that just cause they have a disability does not mean they're a different person, and they are still human which is a good message in no way do I see any negativity in it's representation of disabled people and it's treated delicately. The memory part is also covered in a just a bit better way in ef: A Tale of Memories (but that's one of my favourites so I'm biased). But yeah, extremely over hated and hell I'd put it just above Charlotte in Maeda's works, also anyone who actually wanted a bad end - wtf would have been the point of the rest of the show then, build up a character and have jack shit happen with her - even when it is a bad end you get something like the Haruka speech in AIR or the lie in Your Lie in April, there clearly is not room for that here.

First off AOKANA has a great concept and execution... in the visual novel. The anime removing romance has me feel less both towards characters and sports which you'd think would be improved cause it's given extra focus.
I finished playing both Aokana and EXTRA1 & 2 recently and they're all perfect imo, I've seen some people say the romance was a bit out of place at some points in the VN but this adaptation proves to me that "A story about girls flying through the sky and falling in love" (or something like that was shown at the Grand end credits) is a necessary part of
...
this story. Should also mention some people believe the romance is what makes some of the heroines (Mashiro and Misaki specifically become such amazing characters by the end of their routes and EXTRA's thanks to their relationship with Masaya). The adaptation mostly focuses on Asuka's route and the romance in that was much more minimal compared to others but even so the reason they are able to go against Inui (not spoiling who wins) is the trust they build as coach and player which the romance also serves to highlight and that goes for the other routes as well this isn't even my main issue with the removal of romance - it's how they make Masaya's relationships with the girls feel less important (once again weakening the coach and player trust), in the VN he's the one who fly's with Asuka without Misaki and that becomes a key part of her trust towards him, He changes Mashiro's grav shoes to speeder not Rika cause he's the coach and is making decisions for his players which allows Mashiro to put trust in him (this one specifically annoys me cause Rika's reduced to a side character which is accurate to this route but still why the side character in the anime). There's also the loss of all other heroines asking about what if they had been the one to put in effort which isn't just some harem thing it's them genuinely wanting to be good at FC and shows their growth in both trusting the coach and love for FC. There's also Masaya's trauma which even if both Misaki and Mashiro handle it best in the VN Asuka still does a believable enough job of getting rid of it only thanks to romance making it feel believable.
FC is presented much better in the VN as well and somehow feels more dynamic than this animation, plus artsyle is really good in the VN and CGs (especially EXTRA CGs) look amazing.
The music still being Elements Garden and Ray's ED let the music be a saving grace but even then it's mostly the same as the VN and Crossing Way, Wings of Courage, One Small Step and one of a kind are all better OPs (anime still has a good op just not great) with Millions of You and Happy Tomorrow (Both Mashiro EDs) being close to a-gain.
So my point is play the VN, Asuka's route is like a shounen, Rika's is the worst one but is still good and provides some introspection on Masaya, Mashiro's is just adorable romance and even more so is her EXTRA (enough that I replayed her route within a week of first finishing it), Misaki's is just pure sports drama mostly in EXTRA2 but still some in main game. Every single character in AOKANA gets their chance to shine as well just not in the anime.
AOKANA, EXTRA1 and EXTRA2 are all 10/10 maybe even more so for EXTRA1 due to Mashiro bias but this...

This is the best fanservice I could've asked for from my favourite anime. It came as a real surprise since the Visual Novels have entered an indefinite hiatus since 1st beat was released and almost anything with the series seems to enter indefinite hiatuses. The only other thing we've got recently is the wedding dress figure (Which also surprised me when it was announced on my birthday)
Plot:
After the end of Angel Beats! Kanade is searching for a certain person after being reincarnated. It pretty much takes place during the credits of Angel Beats! final episode and before the post credit scene. The set up of
...
Kanade traveling around the world in order to find "a certain person" is a great excuse to have each chapter giving each Battlefront member a sort of epilogue. Either emotionally satisfying or just great Angel Beats! humour.
Characters:
The main complaint I see towards Angel Beats! is how underdeveloped a lot of characters are but at the same time those complaints always say they were memorable (Which most series can't say in 13 episodes) and they were side characters so I think the fact they left an impression speaks more than the fact we don't know much about them. While it's not going to tell you how anyone died or anything this manga is a perfect display of the characters the chapter focuses on and gives fans of the show so many satisfying moments and references. Yuri living a happy life with her siblings and Iwasawa being a famous musician are such satisfying resolutions to their stories. The way some play out feels right at home with the rest of Angel Beats! humour, Matsushita's chapter with a boar challenging to an udon battle is amazingly dumb but funny, Yuri randomly mentioning crypto currency (It works cause it comes out of left field). I hope we get a good Yui and Hinata conclusion. Kanade herself as always is her cute emotionless self with unintentionally funny comments and her desire to see a certain person makes her somehow even more likeable and is perfect fluff even if we don't see him for a while.
The art is nice - idk I haven't read to much manga so don't know intricacies but this style looks really good
Fanservice (Not the ecchi kind):
Here because this is what most reading this will probably want as fans of Angel Beats! and it delivers perfectly so many little things are referenced, the previous things I mentioned with characters, Kanade constantly being called an Angel by those around her and her saying she's not an Angel, the reference to Kanade and Otonashi's nameplay, Kanade's game avatar being in her afterlife uniform.
If you liked Angel Beats! and wanted more this is the perfect thing for you, aside from the 1st Beat Visual Novel (Which you'll have to pirate if you want translation) this is the best continuation the series has gotten in terms of satisfying fans and for now will have to do to feed my hunger for Angel Beats! content.
Side note: We got this and a 1/7 wedding Kanade figure announced this year, aside from kaginado (Which I still need to finish some VNs before watching but I really want to) this is the most Angel Beats! related things we've gotten in years, is it too much to ask for more content? JUST GIVE ME A 2ND BEAT OR EVEN JUST A TRANSLATION OF HBR SO I HAVE MORE ANGEL BEATS!
