When evaluating an anime we must always consider what the anime wanted to achieve and what it actually managed to achieve. Just because an anime has a story that tries to be complex and philosophical doesn't mean it will be better than an anime that tries to be simple, but with a focus on being impressive, generating hype. It all depends on whether the anime managed to achieve this goal successfully or not. Redline is an anime that fits the second case, it is not and

does not try to be deep and philosophical, no. But can he successfully achieve what he tries to do? Definitely YES! Shall we go to the analysis then?
Starting with the technical criteria of animation and soundtrack: To say that Redline is a beautiful anime is an understatement, Redline took 7 long years to be produced by the Madhouse studio in 2009 and as result it is absolutely amazing even by today's standards! Throughout its 1h 40min duration we are treated to an incredibly fluid animation and a very detailed and stylish art style. Those who are used to Trigger Studio anime can get an idea of what Redline is like, and for those who are not, grab and watch a trailer of Redline. OST is of high importance when we are dealing with an anime, especially if it is about racing, as it greatly increases the adrenaline that the spectator feels (a clear example of this is Initial D) and again the gods of Madhouse did not take it easy, the songs played during the races take the adrenaline to stratospheric levels, and the final music is just perfect! As a general this movie features visuals and OST that left me with my jaw dropped.
As for the story: At this point, the anime is not that strong, Redline's story is pretty basic, and it's basically divided into 3 parts: 1st race, a space of time between races, and final race (3 acts: introduction, development and conclusion). And as the first act is basically a race, the story is in charge of the following two acts. In the second act we see the preparations for the final race, such as character motivations, interactions between them and the context of the world in which the final race will take place. In the third act I felt that the anime tried to embrace too many things at the same time and that ended up making it confusing. From parallel subplots with support characters to government and mafia. If the anime had remained simple, that would be a quality of the work because its idea benefits from a simpler story, not very simple to the point where the anime is empty, but not trying to embrace so many themes to distract from the strong point that they are precisely adrenaline-filled races. (I had almost forgotten, the ending itself I found very pleasant)
As for characters: The vast majority of characters are very charismatic, from our protagonist JP to Sonoshee, Travastila and Machine Head. Several of them are shown the reasons they are racing through flashbacks and dialogue, and having their backstory we are able to understand the characters and like them even more. Our protagonist JP is very badass and manages to carry the story very well. Sonoshee is great also having a lot of charisma. Travastila is a very interesting support character and his subplot is just as interesting. As for Machine Head, he is a good antagonist that manages to take our protagonists to their maximum.
TLDR: I had a LOT of fun with this anime, the races are so well done that the adrenaline is always at its maximum. It turned into one of my favorite movies. His story is not very good, but everything else more than makes up for this aspect, after all in a racing anime the most important are precisely these other aspects.
Final score: 9/10
I really had a lot of fun, I just don't think I can rate it higher because even though the story isn't the most important thing for this type of anime I felt it was weak enough to distract me from the action.

Ao avaliar um anime devemos sempre considerar o que o anime queria alcançar e o que de fato este conseguiu alcançar. Não é porque um anime possui uma história que tenta ser complexa e filosófica que ele vai ser melhor que um anime que tenta ser simples, mas com um foco em ser impressionante, gerar hype. Tudo depende se o anime conseguiu atingir este objetivo com êxito ou não. Redline é um anime que se encaixa no segundo caso, ele não é e não tenta ser profundo e filosófico, não. Mas ele consegue atingir com êxito o que ele tenta fazer? Com certeza SIM! Vamos a análise então?
Começando pelos critérios técnicos de animação e trilha sonora: Dizer que Redline é um anime bonito chega a ser um eufemismo, Redline levou 7 longos anos para ser produzido pelo estúdio Madhouse em 2009 e como resultado ele é absolutamente incrível até mesmo para os padrões de hoje em dia! Durante toda as suas 1h 40min de duração somos presenteados com uma animação incrivelmente fluída e um estilo de arte bem detalhado e estiloso. Quem está acostumado com animes do Estúdio Trigger podem ter uma ideia de como é Redline, e para quem não está peguem e assistam um trailer. OST é de suma importância quando tratamos de uma obra, principalmente se esta for de corrida pois ela aumenta muito a adrenalina que o espectador sente (um exemplo claro disto é Initial D) e novamente os deuses da Madhouse não pegaram leve, as músicas tocadas durante as corridas elevam a adrenalina a níveis estratosféricos, e a musica final é simplesmente perfeita! Como um geral este filme apresenta visuais e OST que me deixaram com o queixo caído.
Quanto a história: Neste ponto aqui o anime não é tão forte, a história de Redline é bem básica, e se divide basicamente em 3 partes: 1ª corrida, um espaço de tempo entre as corridas, e corrida final (3 atos: introdução, desenvolvimento e conclusão). E como o primeiro ato se trata basicamente de uma corrida a história fica a cargo dos dois atos seguintes. No segundo ato vemos as preparações para a corrida final, tal como motivações de personagens, interações entre eles e o contexto do mundo em que vai se passar a corrida final. No terceiro ato eu senti que o anime tentou abraçar muita coisa ao mesmo tempo e isso acabou o tornando confuso. Desde subtramas paralelas com personagens de suporte à governo e máfia. Se o anime tivesse se mantido no simples isso seria uma qualidade da obra pois a sua ideia se beneficia de uma história mais simples, não muito simples ao ponto do anime ser vazio, mas não tentando abraçar tantos temas pra distrair do ponto forte que são justamente as corridas repletas de adrenalina. (Quase havia esquecido, o final em si eu achei muito agradável)
Quanto a personagens: A grande maioria dos personagens é bem carismática, desde nosso protagonista JP a Sonoshee, Travastila e Machine Head. Vários deles são mostradas as razões de que estão correndo através de flashbacks e diálogos, e tendo este backstory conseguimos entender os personagens e gostar ainda mais deles. Nosso protagonista JP é bem badass e consegue muito bem carregar a história. Sonoshee é ótima também possuindo bastante carisma. Travastila é um personagem de suporte bem interessante e sua subtrama é tão interessante quanto. Quanto ao Machine Head é um ótimo antagonista que consegue levar nossos protagonistas aos seus máximos.
Resumindo: me diverti MUITO com este anime, as corridas são tão bem feitas que a adrenalina está sempre no máximo. Se transformou em um dos meus filmes favoritos. A história dele não é muito boa, mas todo o resto muito mais do que compensa este aspecto, afinal em um anime de corrida o mais importante são justamente estes outros aspectos.
Nota final: 9/10
Realmente me diverti muito, só n acho que posso dar uma nota mais alta pq mesmo a história n sendo o mais importante pra este tipo de anime eu senti que ela foi fraca o suficiente pra me distrair da ação.

I always heard about Monster and how good, well written and intellectual this work was. It was very difficult to see someone criticizing this anime and, if you did, this person was told that "you didn't understand the work", or even "this is an adult anime, go back to Naruto". Few are the people who risk badmouthing a cult anime for fear of being criticized for it. About me? I generally don't care what others think about me, I form my own opinion about the anime

that I watch, with Monster it was no different. Shall we start then?
Starting with the technical part of animation and soundtrack. The anime was released in the year 2004 by Madhouse studio, I have a lot of respect for this studio, not for how it is now, but for all its history of anime made. Monster's visuals unfortunately felt dated (unlike older animes such as Cowboy Bebop which seems to be incredibly prettier with each passing year), despite this the art and especially the soundtrack are great for the time that this anime was released.
But leaving the technical part and going to the story, characters and narrative, this is where the anime gets complicated. What is Monster all about? Monster is a story focused (or at least it would have been focused if there weren't so many parallel subplots) on the doctor Tenma. One day, Tenma decides to operate on a boy who had been shot in the head instead of the town mayor who had promised funds to the hospital. Due to this choice, Tenma's career is deeply shaken. A while later in the anime, Tenma discovers that the boy he saved isn't nearly as innocent as he seems and starts a game of cat and mouse between the two. An interesting and badass premise no? Well, a good premise is what often attracts a person to a work, but it's how the anime works on that premise that determines whether it's really good or not. Monster in my opinion lacks in this aspect. The narrative is abysmally slow and get lost in many, many subplots parallel to the main story, this for some is a quality, it makes the anime seem complex and entangled, when in reality it turns out to be an artifice of the author for the anime to seem complex when in fact he's just "stuffing sausage" as the people say in my country. Don't get me wrong some of my favorite works are slow anime, such as Mushishi and Kemono no Souja Erin, but a slow anime to be good has to take the time to get you closer to the characters, develop the story, and not go back and forth from subplots that contribute little to the work in general. The pace of the anime is so slow that, from episode 27 onwards, I started watching it at 1.5x (by the way, I recommend you watch the opening at that speed, trust me, it's really good lol). Combining with all this the anime ends on a laughable cliffhanger leaving the ending open... At least make a closed ending for the anime or don't make one ending at all.
Characters are another problem. I recognize that Monster has complex and well-developed characters, but does that necessarily mean they are good? Not necessarily. A character to be good needs to make you care about him in some way, he needs to be charismatic, he needs to fulfill the role that the work requires of him, most of the time without being superficial. In characters the work fails in the most basic of the ways, which is to make people care about the characters. There was only 1 character in the entire anime that I really cared about and worried about his safety, and that character was Grimmer. As for the great villain of the work, many claim to be the best villain ever created... which for me is very wrong! Want an example of a villain that is much better than him? Frederica Bernkastel from Umineko (manga and VN). In an anime focused on suspense, having only 1 character that the viewer cares about is fatal, the anime loses a lot of its impact. Another thing that took away most of the impact of the suspense is the great repetition of how the suspense scenes are made, always with a similar structure. This takes a lot of the suspense because the result becomes predictable and the anime doesn't even try to surprise you in this case. In a thriller this kills the purpose of the work.
Considering everything I've mentioned I think it's obvious why I didn't like Monster. For me, Monster, besides not being memorable, is an anime that I personally prefer to forget. What started with me having a huge hype, hoping this would become the first anime that I would give a real 10/10, turned into one of the biggest disappointments that I've had in this type of media. My rating for this anime is 3/10. That doesn't mean you shouldn't watch it, in fact I highly recommend you watch it, since the vast majority of people consider this anime a masterpiece. I wanted to like Monster, I really wanted to, but I couldn't. But I also couldn't be absent from giving my opinion seeing the overwhelming amount of reviews praising this anime.

Eu sempre ouvi falar de Monster e o quão boa, bem escrita e intelectual essa obra era. Muito dificilmente se via alguém criticando e se via essa pessoa era dita que "você não entendeu a obra", ou ainda "esse é um anime adulto, volta pro teu narutinho". Poucas são as pessoas que se arriscam falar mal de um anime cult com medo de ser criticado por isso. Quanto a mim? eu geralmente não me importo com o que os outros pensam sobre mim, eu formo minha própria opinião sobre as obras que eu assisto, com Monster não foi diferente. Vamos começar então?
Começando com a parte técnica de animação e trilha sonora. O anime foi lançado no ano de 2004 pelo estúdio Madhouse, eu tenho muito respeito por esse estúdio, não por como ele está agora, mas por toda a sua história de animes feitos. O visual de Monster infelizmente eu senti q está datado (diferente de animes mais antigos como por exemplo Cowboy Bebop que a cada ano que passa parece estar incrivelmente mais bonito), apesar disso a arte e principalmente a trilha sonora são ótimos para a época que este anime fora lançado.
Porém saindo da parte técnica e indo pra história, personagens e narrativa é aqui que o anime se complica. Do que se trata Monster? Monster é uma história focada (ou ao menos era pra ser focada se não fossem tantas subtramas paralelas) no médico Tenma. Um dia, Tenma decide operar um garoto vítima de um disparo na cabeça ao invés do prefeito da cidade que havia prometido fundos ao hospital. Devido a esta escolha a carreira do Tenma é profundamente abalada. Um tempo depois no anime, Tenma descobre que o garoto que ele salvou não é nem um pouco tão inocente quanto parecia e começa um jogo de gato e rato entre os dois. Premissa interessante e badass não? Bem, uma boa premissa é o que muitas vezes atrai uma pessoa pra uma obra, mas é como o anime vai trabalhar encima dessa premissa que determina se ele será realmente bom ou não. Monster em minha opinião peca neste aspecto. A narrativa é abismalmente lenta e se perde em muitas e muitas subtramas paralelas a história principal, isso para alguns é uma qualidade, faz o anime parecer complexo e emaranhado, quando na realidade acaba por ser um artifício do autor pro anime parecer complexo quando na verdade ele só está "enchendo linguiça" como se diz no meu país. Não me entendam errado algumas de minhas obras favoritas são animes lentos, tais como Mushishi e Kemono no Souja Erin, mas um anime lento pra ser bom tem que gastar o tempo pra te aproximar dos personagens, desenvolver a história, e não indo e vindo de subtramas q pouco contribuem com a obra em um geral. O ritmo do anime é tão lento que do episódio 27 em diante eu comecei a assistir ele em 1,5x (aliás, recomendo que assistam a abertura dele nessa velocidade, vai por mim, fica muito boa lol). Combinando com tudo isso o anime termina em um risível cliffhanger deixando o final em aberto... Pelo menos façam um final fechado pro anime ou não façam um.
Personagens são outro problema. Eu reconheço que Monster possui personagens complexos e bem desenvolvidos, mas isso necessariamente significa que eles são bons? Não necessariamente. Um personagem pra ser bom precisa fazer que você se importe com ele de alguma forma, precisa ser carismático, precisa cumprir bem o papel que a obra exige dele muitas vezes sem ser superficial. Os personagens de Monster a obra falha no mais básico que é fazer a pessoa se importar com os personagens. Só teve 1 personagem o anime todo que eu realmente me importei e me preocupei com a sua segurança e esse personagem foi o Grimmer. Quanto ao grande vilão da obra, muitos afirmam ser o melhor vilão já criado... o que pra mim está muito errado! Quer um exemplo de vilão que deixa ele no chinelo? Frederica Bernkastel de Umineko (mangá e VN). Em um anime voltado ao suspense ter só 1 personagem que o espectador se importa é fatal, o anime perde muito seu impacto. Outra coisa que tirou grande parte do impacto do suspense é a grande repetição de como as cenas de suspense são feitas, sempre com uma estrutura parecida. Isso tira boa parte do suspense pq o resultado se torna previsível e o anime nem sequer tenta te surpreender nesse caso. Em um suspense isso mata o objetivo da obra.
Considerando tudo que eu mencionei eu acho que ficou óbvio o porque eu não gostei da obra. Pra mim, Monster além de não ser memorável, é uma obra que eu pessoalmente prefiro esquecer. O que começou comigo tendo um hype enorme, esperando q este se tornasse o primeiro anime que eu daria um 10/10 de verdade, se tornou em uma das maiores decepções que eu já tive neste tipo de mídia. Minha nota pra esse anime é 3/10. Isso não significa que vocês não devem assistir, aliás eu altamente recomendo que vocês assistam, já que a grande maioria das pessoas considera este anime uma masterpiece. Eu queria ter gostado de Monster, queria muito mesmo, mas não consegui. Mas também não podia me ausentar de dar minha opinião vendo a esmagadora quantidade de reviews elogiando este anime.

Sorry for my english, I'm Brazilian so... I'm not very accustomed to write in english, but I did my best. Also, this review may contain some minor spoilers, but I did my best to not spoil anything great.
Oh man, I didn’t wanted to do the review that I’m about to do, but I feel compelled to do one as a longtime fan of the When They Cry series (both Higurashi and Umineko).
Where should I start? Well, I'll start with what I think is perhaps the main reason for this low score. First of all, what is the central message, the main theme of the original

series? Is the violence? The gore? The horror? Nope. The main theme of the original series has always been and always will be: friendship, trust, hope and a desperate struggle against a terrible fate. And now I’ll question: What is the central message of Higurashi Gou? Higurashi Gou (despite having a complexity even worthy of the When They Cry series) is a empty anime. It seems that Ryukishi07 didn’t know how to get the essence of his own work, because Higurashi Gou is anythig, except Higurashi. (He was so lost that he said the series was a "newcomer friendly", yeah of course, the 4th season of something will be very “newcomer friendly”, ONLY in your head Ryukishi...)
Second problem: What need was there for a sequel after Higurashi Rei? The story was already well closed with only 1 loose end that could be resolved in only 1 OVA. Still it was decided to do an unnecessary sequel that all it did was step on the legacy of the original. Practically nothing that made Higurashi a masterpiece is present in Gou.
These were just general problems, but there are more specific ones like: Many of the scenes that apparently do not make sense to an experienced fan of the series are explainable, except, for example, of Keiichi breaking down the prison door and Ooishi using cheat and unlocking infinite ammo. Another thing that doesn't make sense is the motivation of the main villain of Gou. While in the original the main villain had an excellent motivation to do what (s)he does, in Gou the motivation of the new villain is very, very weak.
Now that I got to this subject, let's talk about characters. And once again Ryukishi lost his touch (I'm starting to lose my faith in you man). The characters in Gou are nothing more than a shallow, stereotyped version of themselves. Let's look at the main characters:
Rena:
Original: Character with several emotional problems and internal discussions, and therefore, despite her cute exterior, she can be extremely unstable; it is very smart.
Gou: “kyuute mode” + bipolarity (as her internal conflicts are not shown).
Keiichi:
Original: An idiot, but with a good heart, determined to help his friends and not to stop fighting until the end to save them. He has his moments of intelligence.
Gou: An idiot, indecisive (always needs the attitude of some other character to take the initiative), dumb and shallow.
Rika:
Original: Extremely complex character and with attitudes and personality extremely compatible with everything she went through.
Gou: Complex character, but with extremely incompatible attitudes towards everything she went through.
Satoko:
Original: Interesting character, cute, emotionally strong after everything she went through, very attached to Keiichi, Shion and Rika.
Gou: Quite complex, but... traps everywhere, attitudes incompatible with what she went through, fanatic for Rika.
Mion:
Original: Epic character, she is the glue, the conscience of the group, the most reliable character, puts herself at risk without even thinking twice for the sake of her friends.
Gou: Character shallow and left out (there was only one moment that made us remember how important she is).
Shion:
Original: Very complex and well crafted character, one of the best characters in the series.
Gou: ????? Totally forgotten.
The direction of Higurashi Gou is also very lost, many of the moments of tension and horror have totally lost their impact (compare the scenes of the "usoda").
The art itself I really liked, but the direction fails so much in some scenes that end up turning suspense into involuntary comedy (hi Akasaka).
Good soundtrack, it's nowhere near the level of the VN or even Deen's adaptation, but the opening and ending songs are good.
Enjoyment: Would you enjoy yourself watching one of your favorite works being ruined? Yeah, me neither. I will now read the VN or the manga again to detox from Gou. Higurashi Gou doesn't exist (just like Umineko's anime), Higurashi's anime ends in Rei. Go watch Deen's adaptation, read the manga or VN (preferably the latter two), run away from Gou with all your might.
