I watched this film after it spent an unholy amount of time being shelved on a watchlist, slowly gathering dust over the years. The primary reason behind such a long delay was due to my high expectations for it, due to the phenomenal 1995 film on which this one is based, the involvement of Shaft, and the music and OST that I had previously heard.
Needless to say, that backfired tremendously and the fact that I was a major fan of the 1995 film meant the plot failure for this adaptation only highlighted how it fared against the original. If this were an independent or original

A simplistic humble yet diverse fantasy with decent world-building and characters. At first, I was hesitant to start reading this story in fear of being utterly disappointed after seeing so many trashy stories where the MC also gets engaged to a 15 year old.
But unlike the manipulative pedophile characters that fantasy stories have achieved notoriety for, this story revolves around the daily life of a straightforward middle-age ex-soldier with an immovable sense of justice. While the plot is mostly predictable, it is still an enjoyable read as we see this new fiefdom steadily grow. I would rate it lower than my current rating, but it gets ...

While there is no development in time and ages of characters (with one exception), the story features really good character development. It is a very enjoyable read and, at times, I laughed until my sides hurt. As a fellow socially inept person, many of the struggles faced by the MC were oddly relatable, even if they were slightly exaggerated for comedic effect. Although it might be cliche, it's fun seeing how the story progresses and how the dynamics between characters evolve over time.
Makes for a good calming read when you have nothing else to do but wallow in self-pity and subject yourself to some self-deprecating ... |
