Yeah hxh was pretty boring, I was pretty disappointed. Characters lacked depth (and for me intrigue) in comparison to Naruto characters, story was inconclusive and boring at times, action was sleep inducing. I fail to see why anyone thinks it's so special personally.
My high rating for DBZ is very largely influenced my nostalgia no doubt. The story isn't anything special, the characters lack depth, it's generic in many senses. The characters are likeable though, and the action far exceeds any of the boring 'fights' in hxh, and it was just a huge part of a lot of peoples childhoods, and influenced the anime industry in a massive way.
Naruto is incredible, the character and story writing are anything but generic. You're free to think otherwise but I'm not going to argue it, I think you have to of not finished it or not been paying much attention to call it generic. It's highly flawed in a lot of senses I'm not trying to say it's perfect. If someone wants to call it garbage purely off the amount of filler, I can respect that. But to call it generic is pretty baseless.
