This review will be contain spoilers and may be a bit unstructured. These are some of my thoughts on why Gosick deserved a 10/10.
Gosick is something that I would not have watched earlier because I really dislike stories set far in the past but after watching Princess Principal I am more open towards looking past the setting of the show and at its other merits. Part of the reason I wanted to watch this show was because of Princess Principal so I went into this mostly not knowing what to expect.
I did know that this show contained mystery and this is definitely mainly
...
what makes up the show. While I don’t consume much of the mystery genre, I do still enjoy it and I think that most people are able to be intrigued by them as they can be a good hook to draw your attention and keep you watching. Most people like Scooby Doo right? The mysteries in this are well set up and cleverly solved. In the show the mysteries start off episodic and then begin to come together in an overarching plot. This is neatly intertwined with a love story between the characters.
On the topic of romance this show contains love that is not overly romantic or sexual but is wholesome and sweet instead, which could be seen as the kind of love between very close friends. This is what I really liked about the show (I am not a fan of the other kind of romance) as it means that it doesn’t retract from the story at all and is portrayed rather subtly in the beginning. In fact the word ‘love’ is not mentioned at all in the show and neither is there a confession scene.
Often in shows I am not very interested in the male main character just because I prefer girls but in Gosick I actually had a decent liking of Kujou enough for me to considerer adding him to my favourite character list. I don’t really have much to say why I liked him but he is a down-to-earth nice guy. Though Victorique was of course my favourite character for all the reasons like looks (the hair, face and frills were epic) and personality. Victorique appears to have tsundere qualities but this is not an overused trope but is something that gets further development in the show.
I don’t have much to say about the art and animation as this is quite subjective but the art looked very nice and animation was very fluid.
Sadly, Gosick is a 24 episode show with only one OP, but what music we are given is good, including 2 EDs, with my favourite being ED 1. I actually thought that ED1 could fit as an opening too.
I know that I’ve enjoyed a show when I feel like almost crying at the end whether the ending is good or bad (no spoilers here) and this definitely applied for Gosick.
