I don't even care if I get slayed for this, I'm just going to say it, this anime is a big mess and just extremely sloppy...
I've read reviews where people were saying how the anime was deep and took a lot of analysis or that it is realistic.... Personally, I think the writers for the anime was trying very hard to be deep and artistic... They honestly should have just followed the manga a bit more closely.
The story was simply poorly executed, intriguing at first but then the characters themselves just kind of throw that out of the dust with their irrational thinking, and no,
...
just because they are children and they are from a closed off utopia does not automatically excuse them of their stupidity.
We start off with a sort of mystery about the world outside and the world in their little village and our main characters are given the "truth" from this weird... jelly.... thing... that was really unnecessary design in my point of view. The children are shocked about what they hear and before they can find out more they are discovered and immediately in trouble... If they were to go back to the village and just have their eyes opened to have fucked up their village is and they fight to survive or change it, that would have been a lot better!!! But no, instead we are put on a spot where they forcibly put the characters in an awkward and random almost sex scene which was just... what the flying fuck? Then a war between the queerats which literally came from nowhere. Since when could queerats actually SPEAK human language, I knew they had their own language but apparently they can speak like humans too? Fine, fine, I will accept that... we move on...
Satoru gets his abilities back and instead of getting back to the village for safety... he claims they have to fight them so that they aren't in danger anymore. Uhm, why not just hurry back to the village and ohh... I don't know.. GET HELP? Apparently killing and stuff is only bad when you do it to humans but the writers and director DOES realize that killing and cruelty to animals is one of the signs of becoming a killer or serial killer, right? And these weren't just animals, they had human intelligence. But oh well~ I guess that doesn't matter, despite the fact that they are in the future and that study is and was an easily known fact!! Pfft, not at all, no big deal if you destroy and entire colony of the species. As you can tell, this is when I really started to dislike the anime.
There's still a lot of reasons why I dislike the anime, I didn't completely finish it but I got pretty darn far and I decided I didn't have to put up with its stupidity any longer. The people who wrote the anime did not consider many things, they'd take one part of the extreme and just blow it up but then completely ignore the other. Stopping humans with powers from killing with it? In a society where having powers is the norm, it'd be like how we are living now, basically it's like everyone going through puberty, it's not a big deal. But the way they were saying things was like saying just because someone has a gun, they'd go out and kill people with it. It's not true. There's a lot of factors that go into someone actually killing another and just because a kid is causing trouble or is going through some angst doesn't make them a killer or that they will become one. The characters dismiss a lot of things really easily and it's not because they are brainwashed but rather that's how the writers wanted them to be. That scene where they were running away from that bad ass queerat because they were afraid the people would order it to kill them.... but instead of trying to run away from it all, they run back to the village that they thought wanted to kill them??? Why run away at all then? Where's the logic in that? Am I the only one who is seeing this?
As much as I would love to go on about it, I think this is enough to prove my point of my opinion. I was extremely disappointed by the series, I read some of the manga as well and I'm wondering if it's just the case of bad source material as well.

Wow, a perfect score;; How did I end up this way? In the beginning I thought Princess Tutu sounded ridiculous and childish, I was against watching until my friends insisted that I give it a try... Now I love it and I think it's an absolute masterpiece, a gem.
For those who are wondering if they should give it a try, I’ll say this: This anime is not an anime about ballet but a ballet itself.
The entire series is like a performance and it’s something quite special.
I’m going to let the simple things out of the way first before I go more in depth with
...
the characters and story.
-Art/Animation –
The art style is very simple but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. It’s cute and consistent. The animation is extremely clean, it’s done very well.
-Sound –
The voice acting is top notch, no questions about that. Soundtrack consists of classical music and you just can’t go wrong with that.
- Story – *Minor Spoilers
Wow, there’s many things that can be said for the story. Don’t trust descriptions or summaries, they aren’t very reliable and they either tend to give you too little information or too much. It’s best just to jump in there with an open mind.
The anime always begins with a telling of a fairy tale that will relate to the episode, but as you watch you will realize that the fairy tales foreshadow more than just the plot of the episode. The story starts off very simple, a mysterious man turns Ahiru (literally meaning duck which is what she is) into a human girl and gives her the ability to transform into Princess Tutu whose job is now to return the shattered heart fragments to the prince, Mytho. As you go on that simple story starts to reveal a more complex and tragic story that you will leave you heart broken.
Within the story we are watching, there is another story that had already been written, meaning that the characters we are watching are another character within that story, as I said earlier it’s as if we’re watching performance. They all have a set fate that they were made to meet and we are watching the characters play the story out while ultimately struggling to change their tragic fate. The writer of their story is Drosselmeyer, a deceased man who seems to love tragic tales and has a strange power. He brings Ahiru into the story because he wants to spin the ultimate tragedy.
“Welcome to the stage I've been saving. Now, tell me the best story that was ever told! Tell it to me with no regard for your lives!” – Dorsselmeyer
Why did I love the story to this anime so much? Because beyond the simplicity is something extremely complicated, there’s always more beneath the surface and they hint it to you, it’s up to you whether or not you see them. Honestly that’s another reason why I enjoy this series so much, they don’t spoon feed you information, they also don’t make the foreshadowing so obvious they let you figure it out yourself. If you get it then you get it, if you didn’t then you simply don’t, at the same time, not noticing it doesn’t take away from the experience either, in fact it only adds value to watching the series again.
The emotions in this series are powerful and there are so many words are left unsaid. The ballet aspect of this series isn’t for nothing, it adds to story and used as a form of expression. You don’t have to understand ballet to appreciate it; you don’t have to know all the meanings in the dance to understand the series either. Princess Tutu gives you many ways to understand the story and what the characters are trying to convey. The story telling aspect of this series is absolutely brilliant, if not genius.
- Characters -
There’s nothing I love more than well written characters and character development. This series does both brilliantly.
Ahiru/Princess Tutu – She’s a lovely character~ absolutely adorable. What I liked most about her is how straight forward and aware she was. Yes she is a bit naïve but that changes as the story progresses because just like us, she too is new to the story. Drosselmeyer had just plopped her onto the stage with no script and it’s along side with her that we learn the story as well. I never found Ahiru to ever be annoying or clueless, in fact what I liked most about her is that she catches onto things rather quickly. She doesn’t continuously make the same mistakes with no purpose. She’s a determined character and completely selfless.
Mytho – The prince that lost his heart. He is a prince that is loved and loves everyone, he is everyone’s savior and he had sacrificed his own heart in order to save all those who loved him. When you meet him, he is an emotionless puppet that only does what he is told because he does not care nor feel about anything. It’s interesting watching him grow, in the beginning he is someone who has no opinion of his own then as time goes by he finds his voice.
Fakir – Fakir’s one of my favorite characters, there’s so many reasons why~ His reactions, thoughts, and feelings all just somehow resulted into make him my number one. He’s a character that has many conflicting emotions and time only makes it more difficult to sort it out. His greatest battle isn’t with anyone but himself and those battles are certainly the toughest. He has many difficult decisions to make that would not only decide his own fate but the fate of those he care about which is a heavy burden to carry.
Rue – Our beloved antagonist. Rue is a character that has had it all in the beginning and then you realize she’s actually had nothing all along. She’s not just some antagonist that’s a bundle of sob story thrown at us so we’d feel bad for her, she’s well written and well thought out character that tugs at your heartstrings because she’s so much more than someone meant to oppose. Rue is a character we are made to dislike and misunderstand but most important thing about her is that she is a character that completely misunderstands herself. What drives her isn't anger or hate, what drives her is fear.
Drosselmeyer – The writer of this story. If anything he is the ultimate protagonist but you can’t come to hate him. He’s just a simple man that wants a story told, a tragic story but you can see he’s extremely passionate about it. When you meet him you will be extremely confused, what is he trying to accomplish? Why is he helping the characters? Where is he going with this? He’s the existence that created all of the existence of the characters and there to add the twists and spins to the story and I must say he does it very well.
All the characters compliment each other, they all have their own feelings and stories to share that doesn't muddle the story. Seeing where they began and finding out where they end up is extremely satisfying.
- Overall –
If it wasn't obvious already I love Princess Tutu. It’s a series that I feel is overlooked but I think it’s a series everyone should give a try. Regardless of what you like, if you love a good story then Princess Tutu is perfect. What attracts people to this series is the journey of the characters and alas the inevitable outcome of their fate. There’s a quote in this series that represents the series well and I leave it here for you.
"May those who accept their fate be granted Happiness, may those who defy their fate be granted Glory." – Edel

SPOILERS*
To be blunt Madoka Magica isn't as amazing or genius as some people say it is. It's not a bad series but it's not particularly good either. I started the series trying to keep an open mind, I've already heard a lot of good things about it and I can say I was a bit hopeful. I finished the series in one sitting and I was left unimpressed and maybe a little disappointed.
Below are some of the reasons on why I liked/disliked the series.
- Story -
I didn't find the story to be too intriguing. Yes, it's a dark mahou shoujo anime with tragedy, so
...
what? A lot of the elements that are in this anime has been done before in other animes and mangas, just because it's been done with a mahou shoujo genre doesn't mean it's anything new or refreshing. It had nothing much to offer.
The tragedy part of the story was indeed tragic but only because the series tells you so. They continuously threw sob stories in my face telling me to feel bad or something but not once did I feel any sadness or grief over the characters, the reason will be further explained in the - Characters - section.
The connections of mahou shoujos and witches was interesting but at the same time I found it funny that teen angst is what was fueling the universe.
- Characters -
This is where I am ready to unleash myself.
I disliked the characters very much. All of them. Especially Sayaka.
The characters are just very poorly done in my point of view not because the characters themselves are bad (though some are and they're are pretty stupid) but because of how they are presented.
Mami... I remember when she died I was laughing from the surprise that she was actually dead because a second ago she was talking about how she wouldn't be alone. I didn't find her death significant because there was nothing about her character that the show gave me a reason to care about. All I know is that the writer wanted us to see her as what a mahou shoujo is SUPPOSED to be and that's it. As a character? She's very dull and meaningless.
Sayaka is just a bad character overall, I suppose she's the example of what the fate of a mahou shoujo is meant to look like in the series... but that doesn't excuse what an idiot she is. She makes on bad decision after another and refuses to acknowledge that what she's doing might not be working. In the end rather than a character she's just an example, kind of like Mami.
Kyoko... I actually liked her for a bit, she kind of had her shit together. I didn't understand why she was suddenly kind to Sayaka, I didn't see a reason for it at all but I shrugged it off and just tried to go with it... then when she chose to die with Sayaka so she won't be alone anymore... Ugh... That was just really dumb. NOTHING LED TO THIS, nothing showed why she was suddenly nice and why she cared so much for Sayaka. If it's because they all share a similar pain as a mahou shoujo, I still can't see that as a good reason. All I can see her as if a disposable character to add to the tragedy... and maybe because they needed someone to be the color red.
Homura... I have the biggest problem with Homura. She's our big tragic heroine who has sacrificed everything to save Madoka... and yeah, so what? The show doesn't explain clearly enough as to why she's so desperate to save Madoka other than having a girl crush on her. We aren't given a clear view of why Madoka is IMPORTANT to her. We're just told that Homura has gone through all this mess just to save her and it's a good idea but as a plot or a plot twist, it was poorly executed.
Madoka. I don't care about Madoka, there's no point to her to be honest, other than having the potential of being the strongest mahou shoujo and witch. I found the reason for her potential to be quite dumb, if people with the most sorrow can become a more powerful mahou shojo, wouldn't that be Homura instead of Madoka? Also the reason why she has that potential shouldn't just apply to Madoka, it should work with the other girls as well. It really didn't make any sense to me.
Overall the characters are poorly done, they don't develop and when they do, it's not done well or in a way we can see. I'm not saying all characters have to develop for the good of the character, I'm saying characters should develop properly and in a way that's reasonable. If you're trying to tell a story, you need to show people where the character began, where they are going, and how they get there. Things shouldn't just happen for the sake of plot and unfortunately Madoka Magica is a good example of characters being sacrificed for the story.
If anyone makes an excuse saying that the reason the characters were shown this way was because the anime was only 12 episodes, bite your tongue. That's no excuse, that's bull shit.
- Art/Animation -
The character designs are cute, not my style but cute. I very much disliked the animation and art for when they enter a witches domain. I felt like it was disjointing and didn't well together with the rest of the series, it felt kind Tim Burtony.
One of my biggest dislike was how they used the animation to hold your hand and spoon feed you emotions and reactions. They'll use different angles of a shot to tell you THIS IS SIGNIFICANT or just keep changing perspectives and highlighting reactions or expressions telling you FEEL SOMETHING.
- Sound -
Nothing about the music stood out to me so not bad or good. Just whatever.
- Overall -
TL;DR:
The story was interesting but wasn't nearly good enough because you need good characters for it to hold together, sadly the series did not have that. The characters were merely sacrificial lambs for the sake of the story. Despite what people say, this is not a that great of a series nor is it a good deconstruction of the mahou shoujo genre.

Ao no Exorcist is a manga that I enjoyed and continue to read today. I like the characters, the overall story, the bromance, and just a lot of things about it. When the anime made an appearance I was excited, I couldn't wait to check it out and the first few episode did not disappoint. I was impressed with the animation, the voice acting, and I loved the opening and ending soundtracks.
Unfortunately after the first few episodes... things started going downhill in a rapid speed. The anime would catch up to the manga far too quickly so I can understand why they had to change
...
the story and go down a different path, but I can't shake the fact that the way they executed was done poorly.
Mephisto wanted to use Rin was a weapon against Satan, and they were planning on training him and making him strong enough for that purpose and yet that idea sunk and we were rushed immediately to an ending that just didn't properly fit the piece of where the anime was originally going. I was thinking that there would be a lot of events that would occur (like the manga) where Rin is taught to control his ability and grow stronger as he conquers different enemies, but because there wouldn't be enough content, we are suddenly tossed a random plot device with Satan's back story of how Rin and Yukio were conceived. This leads to the writers telling us to understand Satan's feelings and his reason for trying to infiltrate Assiah. Seriously? What the heck.
In the beginning Satan is a damn bastard, he's an complete ass hole and we are led to think that he must be defeated, but as the writers for the anime had to change the story of the series, we are suddenly led to sympathize with Satan... while at the same time side with his sons with the power of bromance and friendship. NO, just NO! You can't seriously tell me to pity the root of all evil! After all he's done and has been doing in the entire series, we have to feel sorry for him? Worst part is they actually make him look like a 'nice guy' sometimes. What about our main characters and their goals? Are we supposed to be conflicted and try to pick which side is actually 'good' and which side is 'evil'? I call bull shit.
If the pity-Satan theme didn't just rush out and punch you in the face, I think the overall idea of it might have done well, but I couldn't buy into it this time. The fact that they have done this also ruined a lot of the character development and I found that later not many of the characters actually matter anymore, I just don't care for them anymore.
It was a nice effort, and I can't say they didn't try their best, but it just wasn't good enough. There is a lot of talk about a Ao no Exorcist Season 2, and that the makers of the anime wants to wait for the manga to progress further before they start on it, and I think that would be for the best.
If you're a true hardcore Ao no Exoricst fan, then I don't highly recommend the anime, but if you just want a decent watch with a few enjoyable kicks here and there, then by all means go check it out.

Alright, here I go...
I'll be honest here, starting from episode one I had a feeling that I would not like this series... people can go on and on about how good it is, but to me that's nothing but a lie.
The idea of the Psycho-Pass and such was interesting. Checking the mentality of a person and finding a compatible lifestyle and career all controlled by what is called the Sibyl system, which turns out to be more messed up than we originally thought.
What isn't interesting is the cliche character and the cliche story we have to follow instead.
Main female character in a situation where she
...
is new to her job, wanting to prove herself but lacks confidence and doesn't think she is fit for her job.
Main male character is a talented ex cop kind of guy who seeks revenge and does his job in a cool and cold manner.
Bad guy is a someone that thinks the system is a mistake and sees the lives of people as nothing but a game, so using his superior intelligence, he controls the people around him.
The story is basically about strange crimes happening all around the city that we follow episode by episode only to realize all the crimes are actually connected by one mastermind. WHOA, HOW ORIGINAL!!!!! NO OTHER POLICE SERIES HAS EVER USED SUCH A PLOT BEFORE!!! I hope you can feel the sarcasm in that cap sentence. It isn't later until we are told exactly what the Sibyl system is but that hardly matters in the series, in fact we have to leave that juicy bit alone and just continue to watch the bad guy and the good guy play tag.
Majority of the series I felt like the female character was in the way, sure she had character growth but exactly what has she done right in this series? She hasn't done much at all, majority of the time she was merely a noisy bystander that was helpless and couldn't anything to change a situation. She makes rational and reasonable decisions but what fun is that? Why would we want to watch through the eyes of something just "reasonable" when it's far more interesting to watch through the eyes of someone passionate about their goals and their term of justice? So we could make the decision of what is right or wrong ourselves? Is that the psychological aspect of this series? If that's the case, I think they completely missed on the true potential of what Psycho-Pass could have been.
If the series was more focused on the Sibyl System and changing the way it controls society and giving characters more of a voice, then I think the series would have had more impact. Instead, like I said, we have to ignore all that and just watch the bad guy and good guy fight things out, but when you already see the bigger picture, their battle hardly seems to matter.
Enough of that... moving onto the art...
The character design was done by the mangaka of Reborn! and I do not like the way she draws girls, she draws beautiful men but girls are just not her thing, I really hate how stuck up their noses are and how they literally right in between the eyes. Other than wanting to rearrange the main female characters face, I had no other problems with it... unless you count the fact that she's recycled her old art to make these designs.
Background and such were well done, the animation itself was not at all sloppy and they did a great job.
Sound was good, nothing more to say...
Overall, I thought this series was mediocre... it had great potential but in the end it was just a let out. In fact a lot of it reminded me of Sherlock Holmes, and I can't say that's a good thing because just copying something great isn't enough. I don't really recommend this series, but a lot of people seem to enjoy the cheap thrill of it, so hell, if you aren't into a good quality series then go ahead and watch it.
