I really wanna rate this film higher but to put it simply it starts overplaying its hand.
Feels like it really should not have been as long as it is and at some point the script just starts running out of material. Which is weird cause there's at least two whole plot lines that just get completely dropped by the end. Meanwhile for smaller scenes too many set ups are reused which leads to an overall feeling of exhaustion that brings down the end of the film significantly.
If I was rating just the first half or so I'd say it's a 9/10. But with how

Franken Fran

add
I can only recommend this to readers with a strong stomach and a darker sense of humor.
The shortest way I could describe Franken Fran is like an old European Fairytale (like Princess Donkey Skin type stuff) but with much more body horror. Halfway between a Fairy Godparent and Herbert West Reanimator. Fran is a really good character, her ideal of scientific progress at nearly any cost clashes with her unwillingness to let anyone under her care die. (even if it means crafting a fate far worse than death for them) Sure its not exactly realistic, but if you stick with my fairytale comparison it makes ... May 30, 2023
Spoilers ahead because I seriously can't talk about this one with out them.
I loved the first two volumes. I was all set for a kitschy werewolf killing story with some trope-y fantasy and some cool post apocalyptic designs (the hermit crab tank was so awesome) Then book three happened and the story shifted into maximum over drive to desperately burn through as many clichés as it could. A bunch of nonsense about "Readers" and "Archetypes" that culminates in the lamest meta-textual reveal. Velou was not some clever clogs kid, he didn't game the system, there is no power of friendship backed up by a good ... Feb 28, 2023

See, this isn't exactly a good anime. Even for the time it's a bit ugly, the story is very predictable and it doesn't do much unique.
But what it has is a sense of passion, it's a parody sure. But one that adores the genre it's making fun of, leaning into the absurd and extreme clichés out of a genuine curiosity. "Wouldn't it be funny if the protagonist got caught out while trying to scream his attack name?" And you know what, it is. It's downright hilarious. Animation is of course rough like I said earlier, and a lot of things feel like they could use polish. Which ... Feb 28, 2023
Top wo Nerae! Gunbuster

I cannot think of a single nice thing to say about Gunbuster.
The action scenes are flat, boring and predictable. Gunbuster does some flashy thing, several billion enemies die. There's no weight or risk. The characters are dull. All the protagonist does is cry, promise to stop crying, then cry some more because having actual character development is hard. I could maybe say something nice about the animation, but what's the point in blowing your budget on giant killer mechas if their just going to do the same stuff as a generic shonen? Just scream, fling some laser beams from its fingers and yell attack ... Nov 19, 2022

Starts out really good, like an 8/10
But once they get beyond the manga it falls apart really bad. Certain characters just get no progress and its awful. The designs the music and the animation are all phenomenal but after a certain point, the writers just stop doing their jobs? I have no idea what they were thinking cause the manga manages to hold it together so much better. Like I said I think they just stopped following it and the writers must have went on permanent coffee breaks cause nothing can explain the quality drop The giant spider mech drifting and the big city sized robot was ... Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

It's alright.
Nothing super unique or special, probably why its so popular and why it "saved" Cyberpunk 2077. The plot is pretty cliche, one of those stories that only happens because characters refuse to talk to each other. Always keeping needless secrets when they are supposed to trust each other. A protagonist whose unexplained "special" (right until the final episode so he can die and it can be subversive). A character whose entire personality is "I trust no one" so that we can be touched when they change for a plot convenience. And a kind hearted mother who dies to motivate the hero. I think I just described ... Jul 29, 2022
This might be the best of the Funimation series lupin films.
Characterization is on point the voice acting is actually decent and so is the sound editing. Although it still has the same problems as the rest, its just not as goo as the "classic" films and it was clearly copied from a VHS tape instead of a proper master before being put on DVD. Overall its okay I guess, definitely better than the others in the set that I've watched so far. Oh also Lupin gets to drive a Blue Renault A110 which is far cooler than his usual yellow Fiat 500 May 14, 2022

If I could sum this collection up in three words its "not for me"
I detest art and metaphor. Just come out and say what you mean, the only people who need to hide behind fancy words are those who have nothing to truly say. Most of the shorts fall under "please interpret me" art. Even my favourite the one called "Happy Machine" feels like just an overlong metaphor for birth, life and death. Two of the three I liked, Happy Machine and Deathic4 really suffer from it but come out ahead because they feel like someone was actually trying to tell a story with Deathic4 ... May 4, 2022

Honestly. Nothing special.
Beautiful animation, a lot of gifs from this movie cycle all over anime aesthetic and vintage anime type forums. But the story is as cliche as it gets. Your basic boring "war is hell" drama cept it can't even get the HELL part right. Hardly anyone dies, zero gore. The protagonist "Hiro" is just a jerk who disagrees with everyone around him all the time no mater what unless the plot absolutely needs him to honour his word or get involved in something stupid. The plot also doesn't kick in until way too late, and for the dumbest reasons. The protagonist just decides ... |
