Planetes

These anime both depict characters with relatively mundane lives in extraordinary settings, and provide a counterpoint to other shows within their specific subgenres. Patlabor is to mecha as Planetes is to hard sci-fi. As a contrast to most other shows of these types which involve constant strife and warfare, these shows depict how humanity can live peacefully with advanced technology and noticeably put emphasis on human drama instead of epic battles, although both do eventually take more dramatic twists.

So Ra No Wo To

Seemingly unassuming slice of life shows which eventually take a more dramatic, sinister twist. The settings in these shows are fascinating and mysterious, and play a huge role in the story, as much as the main characters themselves.

Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom

Gungrave and Phantom are both tragic and character-driven dramas. They are both set in America, with the main characters of each series becoming assassins and being sucked into a powerful crime organization and a world of violence . Both of these anime use a very realistic and gritty color palette and set a serious and oppressive tone right from the very beginning, with little room for humor. Gungrave and Phantom are also similar in that they are both very stylized and are significantly influenced by Western sources, such as film noir and crime dramas.

Both of these series are as sci-fi cyberpunk as you can get, and both have a very dark and gritty noir-ish tone. They also share the trait of having complex and twisting storylines, although S.A.C. is partly episodic in nature while Texhnolyze is a fully serial drama.

Both are set in Western fantasy settings, and have revenge as a main theme. The fight scenes are also focused around swordsmanship, much like Claymore. However, Ubel Blatt has many more mature scenes with full frontal sex.
