I like to call this anime "How to get away with having a main character that doesn't speak a single line".
Honestly, for as much games as I've played, the fighting game life, and the arcade life never really crossed with my own, so fair warning you're about to watch a 12 episode long series about some kids that like playing fighting games.
While I can't bond with these characters over their video game choices, I can say that they are some pretty solid characters, and that's saying a lot for a series where one of the characters literally doesn't say a single word for the whole
...
series. It follows our main protagonist, "self proclaimed video game maser"chan as he gets brutally slaughtered by girl who doesn't speak, and as he grows through school and accidentally causes another girl to fall for him so hard she becomes a video game master just to impress him.
Now I'll admit, it suffers from the Netflix "make everything CG for no good reason" effect, so i cant really give i credit in the art department, except i did find myself greatly appreciating the legit game play and the random cutouts of 2D video game characters being inserted into the scene for a good joke.
The sound track is pretty nice, intro is alright, not exactly what I'm looking for but I'm glad they actually showcased a ton of different games from that era instead of taking a cheap way out and just using a bunch of easily identifiable objects that scream "gamers". Skipping that ED is a crime btw, The police are already on their way.
With another box checked off my "all the anime that Netflix has uploaded in the last year" list, I'd say this is a pretty solid choice if you're looking for some good comedy and great character building. Just don't expect any major growths in animation style, it doesn't really get any better as the show goes on, except for some pretty impressive scenes on episode 12 that I'm pretty sure weren't actually CG.
7/10 Maybe I should just start talking to random girls about anime so I can start a fan following already...

Hero Mask, otherwise known by its other title, Origami II : Papers Final Form
Before I even start with dissecting the characters and plot of this anime, something needs to be addressed, and that is the way this series deals with flashbacks. Never before in my life have i watched an anime where I literally had no idea I was watching a flashback until later in the episode someone says "3 years ago".
This anime has your classic set of characters for a cop show of its type:
Old man Boss guy: who seems like he's rough but he really just knows what he is doing
Hackerman: I'm
...
in.
Main Cop guy : Whose literally to good at what he is doing to follow the rules, probably has robot limbs or something, idk
Main not cop girl: Who gets into the car saying "I'm not gonna give up" then proceeds to almost die
Bad anime villain: "Laughs" in anime
This is one of those series that takes place in the future, where for some reason the cops have all this amazing technology but the everyday masses still live in normal houses without anything cool. And this is where the "Mask" part of the title comes in
The masks are these super powered origami things, which fit over peoples faces and basically make them immortal, which shouldn't even be known about but the big business that made them accidentally gave one to a psychopath and he decided to take on japans entire police force, and almost won, and that's the end of episode 2. This anime has a big problem with pacing, it makes the masks seem like a serious threat, but over the course of the anime we only see a few people using them. It ends up becoming this murder mystery of some lady named Monica who was apparently really important even though she literally had one on screen conversation before she died.
The anime builds up this whole Live Corporation threat, then as soon as they think that we have seen enough of the same gun carrying, red eye goggle soldiers, it throws these other guys at us who are apparently different but in the end work for the same guys, so I just refer to them as Live's "Elite Battle Squad", who has two competent members, a guy who has an infinite amount of bullets in his gun, and some dude with bombs.
This anime has a lot of fights thrown in there, most of which are gun fights where the enemy shoots 15 billions bullets and don't hit anything, then our good guy pops 5 bullets and wins the fight, and then the one on one fights, which are quite frankly some of the strangest things I've seen in anime. It's like the animators sat down and said "you know whats the problem with fighting anime these days, they move to fast, lets slow everything down and make sure to clearly show every move they make", and then they throw in all these random sound effects in the fight, which sound completely out of place all the time.
I'll give it credit for its art, some of the background pieces and car driving scenes are done pretty good for what CG can do, but all the characters just have this really weird look about them that just messes with you.
It's not even that good of a mystery either. Basically every character introduced that isn't involved with the task force is a villain for some reason. And only one person is really trying to solve the mystery, everyone else is just sitting around either dying, or saying "Don't worry the cops will handle it from here" and then failing miserably at their job.
From the intro, which is almost nonexistent, it makes it seem like there is 22 mask wielding people out there, and if that's the case, oh boy do we have a long time to go before this mess of an anime is over. Hopefully Netflix decides not to continue with this one, cause once i realized this was just "Part 1" i almost stopped watching it.
so overall, its a 6/10. I'm not saying its the worst cause I've seen far worse, but if anyone needs to start wearing a mask, it's the anime itself.

With the cover of this anime boasting "from the creators of 'Your Name'", I had some high hopes, but unfortunately, I didn't get nearly as much out of if as I think was intended.
This "anime" is three short stories, about three different people, focusing on three different things that they are dealing with. These people have nothing to do with each other except for a point where they all board the same plane, but otherwise they literally have nothing to do with each other, and by the end, the random plane boarding feels forced just to make the connection between them apparent.
Story one is
...
"Man talks to audience about how noodles impacted his life", in which, a man monologues about how he ate noodles in the mornings most days of his life.
Story two is "Women in modeling starts to doubt herself because she didn't get a job", in which a woman with a modeling job shows up late to a job she was scheduled for, and doesn't get the position, then throws herself into a series of self destructive behaviors to try to regain what she lost.
Story three is "Dude runs across city to listen to a tape recording", in which this dude flashes back to when he was a kid and worked really hard to get into a good high school to be with the girl he liked, only to have the whole plan backfire and him being alone because he was so focused on school he didn't listen to a tape recording, and didn't tell the girl he liked that he was applying to surprise her. It's the best one because it actually has some plot.
The art is obviously pretty good, except for some parts where there were some pretty jarring switches between hand drawn animation and CG.
for characters, the third story is the only one that really does anything. the first one is literally a guy monologuing about noodles. The second one has people thinking it has character, just to have people make a 180 for the sake of the "plot". Though my favorite is squint eye blond guy in story two that you know is a jerk before he even talks and he lives up to your expectations.
If you watch this, be honest with yourself and just watch the second two, the first one isn't worth your time.
Overall, this anime tastes really machine made, 6/10.
Don't watch first story while hungry

It brings me a lot of joy to see this type of anime being so well received by the anime community. Having not known about it until seeing that its second season was beating out My Hero Academia in the rankings, I decided to check it out.
This is like a nice mix between Mob Pshyco and Handa-Kun, as the main character is an overpowered physic who is purposely trying to distance himself from people so he can live a quiet life. But of course, as the slice of life-esc comedy kicks in, anything but that will happen.
It has a huge array of characters,
...
that by themselves are all pretty generic characters, but when they mix together ends up creating something really unique, with our main character having to be damage control for everything that they do, as he likes to let them get into bad situations without them realizing it and saving them at the last second without them realizing anything bad was even going to happen.
Saiki is different from what the classic definition of a Psychic is, given this anime takes that as "person that can do basically whatever they want with some minor side effects". The anime also has great moments where Saiki is just so powerful that his target is the genre of "Slice of life" anime itself, where he actually goes out of his way to bend his world around the classics of the slice of life genre so that he doesn't stand out as much.
Also, its enjoyable that every character has their own short theme, and it will play almost every time they do something dramatic, causing scenes where two characters are doing something and their themes just keep on repeating every time the screen focuses back on them, which would seem like it gets boring but because of the dual lives almost every character is trying to live, it simply builds on how the character is feeling at the moment.
But I also have to appreciate that this anime doesn't try to go too far with the meta commentary on Slice of Life anime as a whole, preferring to simply use the standard rules to create a nice balanced world.
My only issue is that there is simply to many characters that don't get all that much time in the spotlight, to the point of where the final episode goes out of its way to joke about that exact thing.
But overall, its very enjoyable. I knew from starting the first episode I was going to enjoy it and ended watching the whole thing in one night (The series says its 120 episodes, but that's because the original release was 5 minute episodes, which was condensed down into a nice 24 episode series)
So yeah, overall, its about 8 coffee puddings out of 10, I'm looking forward to how far he will go to get the last two.

As one of the first Netflix originals that isn't a mess of CG animation, Devilman Crybaby is pretty good. Its a twist on the old Devilman manga, but doesn't really change much aside from the whole "Crybaby" aspect, which isn't much of the downside really. The only thing I can say bad about this anime is that the beginning really makes you think its a totally different kind of anime. Watching this as someone who didn't know the source material at all, I had no idea what it would eventually become, so I thought i was walking into some sort of superhero ecchi comedy due
...
to the dialogue and the really weird animation the first couple episodes have (insert really bad running animation here). In the end, without much spoilers, it becomes a really in depth psychological look into humanity.
Its soundtrack tho, really nice. All of the songs used really work with what is happening on screen, except I don't exactly understand Japanese so the random Japanese rap songs with the cool rapping thugs were a little weird, but that's more of a language barrier then an actual complaint.
If your looking for a superhero anime that follows the general path of most super hero anime's, then this isn't the anime for you, it doesn't follow the same general formula at all (trigger warning imbued in symbolism intensifies).
Also don't watch this anime with anyone else around unless you want to have a really awkward conversation at the end of episode 1.
Ryo looks like DIO from JoJo's, 10/10 would crossover again.

"School is the greatest thing ever"
Gakkougurashi, or the much easier to say School-Live, is a fun, happy anime about the antics of four high school girls, their teacher, and a pet dog, as they participate in their club, where the only rule is that they cant leave the school. But that's okay, because they have lots of food, water, a swimming pool, a garden on the roof, and tons of space to run around in. The school is set up wonderfully for people to live in round the clock, it has solar power in case the power grid goes down, its own water filtration system,
...
and a fun science room.
This anime has some really good characters, including
Yuki: The carefree character that just wants to have fun and LOVES school
Shovel Girl: She carries around a shovel everywhere she goes, surprisingly nobody says anything to her about that
Leader girl: The Club president, runs the garden and cooks the meals, makes everything run smoothly
Book Girl: A new recruit to the group, is getting used to their situations and Yuki's antics
Meegu na: The adviser for the club, she does all the paperwork to keep everything official. She is the voice of reason for Yuki, but is mostly ignored by the other characters.
Doggo: He runs around and gets into mischief, he can even open doors and interrupts classes.
The intro is pretty good, the slight changes throughout the anime break it away from the normal "cute girls doing cute things" intros that just show off the characters and call it good.
Ive watched this anime twice, and it is much better the second time around, once you know all of its secrets, it makes the whole thing much better to watch from the beginning and see how the anime works around those secrets and makes them actually obvious if you know what your looking for.
Sometimes I do think that this school is a little over prepared though, its like they built this thing to survive a apocalypse or something.
Was a 7, now an 8/10 after watching it again.
But don't worry about the girls, I'm sure they are doing fine.

What if we take Light Yagami and make him a young girl with magic powers fighting a world war?
That's basically what this anime is. Taking place in an alternate universe where the world is on the tipping point of its first world war, this young girl takes up arms to bring her glorious country to victory.
Of course, an average anime of this type would be little fun, seeing wars fought with a couple of magic users is an old concept and rather boring at this point, so this anime takes everything a step further. Our main character, Tanya, hates god because she is an absolute
...
atheist, and this being that claims to be God just wont stop messing with her, until she finally admits defeat and admits that God is real and everything is going exactly to his plan, which paves the path for the never ending stream of hilarity that is this girls 1v1 fight against god himself.
The series has a pretty good set of supporting character, including:
Only other mage girl: The only other girl in this series that is a mage
Guy with scar above his eye: He is just this guy that shows up often with a scar above his eye but is important because he survives getting stabbed
The people in Tanya's squad: Just your average memorable characters that are immune to bullets because plot protection
High ranking officer 1: He has weird hair and hates Tanya, but doesn't do much.
High ranking officer 2: Actually talks to Tanya, embraces her good war advice and uses it to make himself look good
High ranking officer 3: IDK what he actually does, but he is important for some reason
And of course plenty of soldiers fighting a war that will probably never end.
The art and sound are very good, with the intro and ending theme being some of my favorites in a while.
However, Tanya is basically the only character actually be built up, most of the other characters are just there to exist and fill the roles that the anime needs them to, so if you are not into characters that use logic to determine all their moves in order to benefit themselves then you will probably not like this anime.
Overall it was a pretty good anime that showed what would happen if WW1 and WW2 happened at the same time and magic existed.
8/10 would definitely take up gods sword again.

This anime is really good for a laugh. While watching it there were several times i had to go back and re watch scene just to see all the jokes they were able to fit in there.
If you're here for an anime about world conquest, then you're about to be conquested yourself, by a lack of actual conquesting.
The whole anime is basically about this girl who plans on taking over the whole world and her crew of comrades, who include
Girl with sword: Features include, a sword, eye-patch, and a underlying crippling depression that causes her to break into tears like a
...
2 year old whenever she loses the eye-patch
Magic Girl: IDK if its actually magic or just advanced technology but she does some cool stuff and sleeps wherever she wants
The Tank: He walks, talks, and doesn't stop, unless he gets shot then he takes a bullet wound cause he is actually just a human after all
Robot Girl: Perks include: Is a robot. Cons include: She runs on vegetables
That one guy that smokes a lot: He looks like a cowboy and smokes sometimes, usually followed by him getting water poured on him, making him leave the group, then come back and sometimes even not break everything.
The normal guy: Our main character, doesn't have anything special about him he literally just talks to people and thats about it.
This group is fought by the relentless group of highschoolers dressed in white robes and masks on top of masks, with the goal of finally wiping out the Zvezda group and stopping their not-so-tyrannical rule over this small town in Japan.
At a certain point you realize that you just enjoyed this anime, thought it was funny, but you got through it without asking any questions on how things work. I mean, how does the entire city run on the energy produced by a giant plant, idk, but it does and its pretty funny.
Nevertheless the anime does have some moments that could be called "tense" and actually felt like it was doing something sometimes. Definitely worth a watch if you have a free night and nothing else to do.
And remember kids, smoking kills... everything. like its actually the main enemy in this anime for some reason.

I gotta say I was really hoping for a lot more from this anime
I first heard of this anime a while ago, heard it was going to be a Magical Girl Death Battle anime, well that was about 75% correct, it has a lot of magical girls, a lot of death, but not a lot of Battling.
The characters of this anime are probably the best thing of it, it created a large cast of characters that were all distinct from each other based on their powers, and all had different backstories. One of the best things about this series is that because of the
...
way the magical girls were selected there happened to be a lot of variety in the people, instead of most magical girl animes which just have a bunch of high school girls. Pon was probably the worst though, I feel like he was trying to pull off a Madoka Magica and be Kubye but he just wasn't nearly as funny or villainous as him.
The reason I say there isn't very much Battling in this anime is because almost all the "Battles" are over in a few seconds, and most of the time the result is pretty disappointing, sometimes feeling like the only reason a character lost is because the plot wanted a different character to win.
It doesn't bring much new to the table in terms of magical girl anime. It follows pretty much the same formula of other ones, recruit the cast, shock the audience with something, kill off the cast, reveal evil mascots true intentions, overcome evil mascot, end on a somewhat high note. Im not going to spoil who walks out of this anime alive but it sure isn't who i expected (Tears*Magicaloid 44). The shock didn't really surprise me tho, since i think everyone walking into this anime knew it was supposed to be a death battle anime. So if you're looking for an anime with happy characters, or a main character that does anything else then cry every time she is on screen, turn away now, its not going to be for you.
6/10, As the saying goes, you either Sink or Swim(Swim)

Usually when I review an anime a lot of thought goes into every piece of that anime, and the result is a well constructed reasoning on why that anime deserves that rating. Gun Sword seems to be an exception from this system. I really enjoy Gun Sword, it is still one of my favorite animes to this date, and I first saw this anime almost 5 years ago at this point. I've tried and tried to think about why it is such an amazing anime, but something I've noticed is that there is two different types of people when it comes to this anime. There
...
are people who see it as a standard futuristic mech anime that doesn't do anything special, and those that think its the best thing ever and cant explain why.
If you are going to like this anime you will know by episode one, Van is a hilarious character, simply because in a world surrounded by crazy people he is pretty much the calmest one of them all, because he pretty much knows he will win. Whenever he pulls out that belt sword and brings down Dan you know its about to get good real quick. Wendy is an amazing companion character, being literally a complete opposite of Van, but the two cope with each others quirks and get along. Carmen99 might not be around, and mostly shows up to advance the plot, but she brings a good form of humor by showing that Van still has points where he isnt the best. Ray is simply one of the coolest characters to ever come out of anime, his mech is amazing, and he stands to show how serious the whole show really is as he never really jokes around like everyone else.
I think one of the biggest draws to this anime is Vans determination to achieve his goal. He gets mad when he loses his chance to face the man with the claw, and he takes down whatever stands in his way to get to him. But also, Van is still human, and he does get hurt, and has to rely on Wendy at some points to get through situations.
The Man with the Claw is a depiction of what an anime villain should be. A character that isn't really evil by any means, but just has his own goals that conflict with the world view. He is a calm person, there isn't a single moment that he gets angry, seeing every situation against him as a chance to grow, and every time his plans go wrong he reflects on that event and grows himself. Him and Van make a perfect Hero vs. Villain situation because of how opposite of each other they are. Van is determined to kill the man with the Claw, while he just wants to love everyone in the world.
The villains in this anime are simply amazing. All the minor people in the beginning show how the world has changed from what type of society we are used to, then the main group on mech riders steps in and the whole world just turns upside down, you don't know if Van is really in the right anymore.
The only character i really dislike is Fasalina, she just goes against everything this anime wants to be.
The setting of this anime is also great. When it first starts out its shown as a desert world, kinda like the world Trigun made, but then it changes, there is entire cities and oceans and forests and ruins and all sorts of changes in the environment you don't expect, and all to find out later what the real point of the planet itself is and it just blows you away.
Plus every Mech is different in this anime, but each is so different that they are all kind of equal because they can all do something that the other can't. There is never one truly superior mech, everything has a weakness to exploit, even the super mechs the main villains use (this kinda sounds like what Aldnoah Zero did but its better because its not all based on some super smart kid making all the moves).
There also is not a single boring episode, I remember each and every single episode of this anime, mostly because of how unique every one of them are. The show goes from forcing Van to conform to dress attire for a formal event on a Zeppelin to Bokimi (Which is a shameless fan-service episode for the sake of fan-service, and brings a moment of humor to conflict with the progression of the anime thus far).
I think that anyone that thinks this anime is bad doesn't see past the main plot. Its about a guy riding a mech in the future trying to get revenge, nothing really original, but if you look at what the anime does with that plot, and the characters it uses to make it happen, it becomes something completely new. Every character is like a different condiment, you need them all to make something be good :)
