I mostly watch anime to feel good and warm and fuzzy inside. I like some action shows but I don't find myself watching them as much.
I go back and forth on how I should rate anime. Currently my list is rated as follows. shows are judged on what they are trying to accomplish. If it's just trying to be comfy and relaxing that's what I judge on. If it's trying to tell a story or have emotional impact that's what I judge on.
10 - This is truly what MAL calls a 10, a Masterpiece. Someone who likes anime of any kind would be missing out by not seeing this. This transcends sub-genre and affects anime as a medium. Some 10's may not be perfect but they are so good and impactful in some way that I think they need to be seen.
9 - This is a fantastic show. The show is either perfect or almost perfect. Someone who likes the genre should definitely see it.
8/7/6 - These scores are for shows that aren't perfect but are good to great. All of these shows are worth the time it takes to watch them but have more or less important flaws in relation to their score. I enjoyed all of these shows but I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to recommend them.
5 - Average - There is nothing majorly wrong with this show, but it's just not engaging or otherwise enjoyable to watch. It's not quite worth the time it takes to watch the show. Nothing majorly wrong, just nothing majorly good either. Forgettable or standard, doesn't push any boundaries and/or is unoriginal.
4/3/2/1 - These mean what you think they mean. These shows have major flaws in increasing importance as the score goes down. There are almost certainly noticeable and recurring technical flaws like poor animation or poorly written dialogue or something else. These flaws are not a matter of personal taste, they are undeniable flaws.
