As a devote fan of Haruhi, I actually want to apologize to Tanigawa and my fellow uneducated comrades about misunderstanding why it has taken so long for him to write a new novel.

I want to clear something up with everyone here, this isn't the first time Tanigawa went on hiatus. He went on hiatus before writing his last novel (2 parts in Japanese version), The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya, taking a 4-year break from The Dissociation of Haruhi Suzumiya novel. If you haven't read the Light Novels, I highly recommend you to do so. At the end of the last novel, (which is arguably the best novel in the whole series, even beating The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, in my opinion), in his "afterword" section (basically a section where the author gets to say his opinions on the books and his fans etc.), he not only expresses his regrets for the novel being so late, but also explains why.

"Now, if you're wondering why this book is so late, to be completely honest, there's no particular reason. There really isn't, and that's the problem. All I can say is that all of a sudden, I couldn't do anything, and it even started to interfere with my regular life. People would ask me what the problem was, and since I didn't know, trying to explain my inexplicable self to other people was the hardest thing of all.

[Skip a paragraph or 2 on his self-conscious excuses]

The obvious deduction
[on why the book is late] may well be that the sloth that has provided the underpinning of my life thus far finally caught up with me." -Nagaru Tanigawa

-This is what he says at the end of the last novel. I bring this up because this shows that he understood what his problem was, and all things considered, his struggles are extremely relatable, but there's more.

This is his departing statements:

"I may well be totally useless and weak-willed, but if my readers have enjoyed my works even a bit, I am fortunate indeed.

I plan to continue being a weirdo who writes weird things, so even as I hope you'll not abandon me, and even as I will labor to fix the more troublesome aspects of my personality, I think it is time to bring this afterword to an end.

I hope we will meet again, someday, sometime, somewhere, somehow.

Until then!" -Nagaru Tanigawa

I personally believe it to be unforgivable of us as fans to overlook such important aspects of his personality. I think we first need to understand that Tanigawa is undeniably human, and like all humans, we all have flaws, in fact, any devote Haruhi expert would know, that "being human" is a core theme/ topic brought up within the anime, manga and novels ALL THE TIME. To ignore his human nature, is equivalent a slap in the face to the entire Haruhi franchise. Next, he predicts/ implies that his next novel may take a while (in his departing statements), and he doesn't intend to stop no matter how slothful he becomes. My next point, is that he is actively trying to fix this problem of his that he is facing, which leads me to believe that Tanigawa is actually not slacking off, but writing and rewriting his next installment over and over again. Whether the installment is too long, or he is trying to outdo himself, or he is simply in a writer’s block like he described before, I believe that we should stick with him as a creator we love and respect for his time and effort and devotion to his craft, just like Kentarou Miura (Berserk) and Togashi (Hunter x Hunter), and not bash him for taking his time. If anything, we should be worried about his well-being, as we haven’t heard anything from him in 6 years, aside from being a minor influence in The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-Chan anime. In any case, the point I make is that we shouldn’t abandon him, just as he wouldn’t abandon us.

Before we judge him for a situation we know nothing about, let’s try having a little faith. Furthermore, I think that if you haven’t read the rest of light novels or manga, you have no right to complain about lack of content. We all want more of our favorite stories as soon as possible, but considering how much thought and quality goes into the novels, would make me dissatisfied if it got rushed, all thanks to some insensitive and greedy fans, like ourselves.

And for this reason, me selfishly bashing him for quite a while now, is why I must apologize.

Go back to work son of a bitch

@PureFault It is not an issue of availability of source material to adapt, it's just that anime studios very rarely make anime for non-running series

PureFault | Mar 11, 4:32 PM
It's odd that many people are accrediting the lack of more Haruhi anime to the fact that he hasn't written anything new... the anime adaption only covered a little under half the material from the light novels, so there's still enough for another season or two already.

Good god in his heaven please write something, the world needs more Haruhi and I don't want to add another year to my eternal waiting ;_;

Tanigawa-san, I have no idea if you will ever read this...

People here love your work. We love the worlds and characters you created. Your stories are still better than pretty much every other light novel released in the past 10 years. People love you.

And we really want you to come back.

Please, PLEASE tell us another story. waiting nearly 7 years is painful. We want to know what wacky adventures await the SOS Brigade. We want to know if Haruhi will ever find out about her abilities. We want your stories back.

If you are worried about writing something we won't like, don't be. Anything new is preferable to getting nothing at all. After such a long wait (and considering the current world we live in), you are needed now more than ever.

Please come back.
