Don't get me wrong...

After reading 29 chapters, I've had an enjoyable reading experience so far. After leaving the manga scene for about a year, I was instantly drawn to this series and glad I picked it up. From day one I was sucked into the story, and by day two I was annoyed that I had to wait for the next update the following month.

Re: Monster appeals to the rpg gamer genre. The concept of the manga has been seen in several other series: the protagonist dies in another life and reincarnated in another. The story dives into the daily events of his new life ... in a world that he strives to make use of to the best of his ability. Although the concept is not original, the author of this manga does a notable job in bringing something new to the table that I personally have not seen in detail yet. The series introduces a thorough ranking system. Simply put, if a certain character reaches a certain level cap he or she can choose to rank up to the next class. Not only is this system intriguing, but also helps move the story at a steady pace.

Every manga, no matter how good it is, has some kind of flaws. The amount of detail that Re: Monster puts on a page can seem somewhat overwhelming to those who tend to glance over the smaller details. However, that is something insignificant compared to the main problem I find with this series.

It is right for this series to have the mature tag as there will be several panels that may not seem appropriate for a younger audience. The major fallacy that lies in the manga is rooted in the sexual encounters with the lower class of the mangaka's created society. In this society, there are slaves. The problem isn't about slavery itself, but how they are treated in a particular manner. These individuals are drugged and eventually give in to their oppressors. The main character tells his followers that when these drug-induced individuals "consent," it is okay to interact with them for pleasure. The issue in this is that this author's perception of consent is horrifically distorted. Understandably it is a work of fiction, but the message that it emits to readers is that it is okay to have a sexual encounter with someone who is in an intoxicated state.

I will undoubtedly continue to follow the series. The good qualities of Re:Monster undoubtedly outweighs the bad. However, it is worth pointing out the conflict that arises between what is socially acceptable in the story and what is acceptable in reality. Readers like myself can be internally conflicted between this very issue. Therefore, the addressing of it helps ease this conflict and hopefully allows us to continue the incredible experience that this series provides to readers.

This entire manga is basically told in a slice of life manner but in a fantasy setting with some video game aspects. As you read through the manga, you’re experiencing Rou (Protagonist) living out his life in this new world, crafting weapons & armor, cooking, killing monsters.
Personally, I cannot stand the slice of life since I find it boring as it tells you mundane daily experiences of the protagonist. Unless we’re talking about well written comedy, e.g. Grand Blue, Danshi Koukousei, I’d usually say no to most slice of life.

One thing to NOT expect in a slice of life is a story as they usually ...

OK, the idea behind the story is great but it gets so bad later on to the point where you will actively get mad at the main character's stupid motivations. Not only that this series will berate you with endless skill text boxes to explain powers, but it gets so bad that sometimes you won't see characters actually speaking for two or three pages. In addition this instead of being a struggle the characters just have no problems with anything after a certain amount of chapters. If you are into something that's just all about cool powers and straight action then ya read this, but ...

Re:Monster is not a very ambitious kind of manga, being quite generic with almost everything, however it is fun and easy to read - i can recommend it to anyone who is interested in manga with mmorpg fantasy setting. Ok, lets break the whole thing down.

Story - 7
In my opinion, the biggest shortcomings (at least for the starting chapters) of most 'stuck in mmorpg world' stories are:
-how/why did the protagonist wind up in the situation that he's in this world
-what makes the protagonist special
Those 2 subjects are usually done pretty lazily, because the story doesn't plan on going back to them *ever*. Unfortunately the Re:monster ...

it is a unique thing.
Goblins and ogres, and new creatures come to be introduced in a new light.
and like what seems to be a very popular area that's taking over,
this manga has taken a good adaptation to a new fantasy.
A world of creatures like goblins and magic and sorcerers is nothing new,
But we are reading and being introduced to the lives of the ogres/goblins.

But one thing that gets this manga so well, is the power building thing,
that game-like scenario that just seems so popular in my own opinion.
In mahnwa, manga, chinese comics, it doesn't matter.
If it involves a story that has a scenes of game ...

Honestly simply an excuse for someone with a rapey mentality to create a context where there is another world that justifies it perfectly and anyone who is not a female or not part of the MCs slave group does not exist. Still read quite a bit to see if anything ever changes. Nothing did

If you have a lot of time and given we all Do have enough of it to read every isekai that has ever come out so far, then this might be slightly worth it. But to be safe try putting this towards the end, just before all the cultivation and princess/ceo/daughter stuff ...

This review is just my ramblings, but if you can get value out of my word salad, then that's cool. And as always, don't take this as an objective critique of the material.

Story - 3 (Poor)

It's your standard run-of-the-mill isekai: the MC gets sent to another world for no reason whatsoever (with no real reason for even putting him there, it's just a mechanism to advance the story) and he proceeds to build a flourishing society. Plot points and characters are introduced seemingly to advance the plot and are done so very inorganically.

There is no effort put into the isekai ... mechanics at all, we just have to accept that the MC has this insane ability and can grow exponentially with no downside. The guy is overpowered and faces no challenges that are convincing to the audience.

The one thing interesting was the relationship between the tank character and the MC. The author drops hints that there is some tension in their relationship (finally!) but I didn't read far enough to get to any resolution of that plot point.

Art - 5 (Mediocre)

At the very least, the art is okay. It's by no means beautiful, but it does the job. Lots of blank and boring backgrounds too, there's no real attempt to establish any kind of geography: they're just in some kind of forest. Panelling is boring and there's not really any interesting perspectives in there. It does the job to satisfy the plot.

Character - 2 (Dreadful)

The MC is the absolute most perfect human being both in personality and in specs. There is no nuance to his character at all, the one character flaw that he has is that he's ruthless to insubordination but even in this case, no-one judges him poorly for it. The guy literally tortures people from his society and forces them to watch throughout the whole night to "prove a point". This would be interesting if it weren't for the fact that this seemingly has no consequence. Everyone just accepted it, no-one expressed their dislike for it, nope, torture is all a-go on the isekai-train!

The supporting cast are nothing to write home about either. They're all your typical tropes: you have a muscly tanky dude, you have the childhood friend, you have the quiet brooding type but perhaps the worst characters of all are the prisoners of war, who inexplicably fall in love with the MC. All five of them.

I could go on, but I fear that that I may be critique the tropes in isekais rather than an actual critique of the material.

Enjoyment - 6 (Fair)

Despite all this, if you are actually looking for a wish fulfilment power fantasy then this does do the job. The character designs are ok, there are some cute girls and there's a lot of implied sex but don't go for this if you're looking for smut. It's fairly tame in that regard.

Conclusions - 3 (Poor)

With all that being said, if you're willing to turn your brain off and watch this overpowered MC tenderly love his harem and face no challenge whatsoever as he grows in power exponentially, then this is the one. However, the isekai mechanics are executed poorly, the characters are paper thin and the setting is terribly banal. I'd like to believe there are better isekai out there that do all this better.

It's difficult to judge due to the good start, weak middle and probably an end that couldn't be saved.
This creation can be described as an isekai survival in a dark medieval fantasy world which is the main reason I got interested in it. I've always been a fan of these concepts.

== Beginning 8/10 ==
The story starts slightly boring but pleasurable, and that was enough to keep me reading. First attempts of survival and betterment even got me in awe. However the longer I kept reading, the more disappointed I was getting.

== Middle 2/10 ==
Copy of Slime Isekai
Unfortunately it soon becomes clear that this manga is ... just an slightly darker copy of Slime isekai and the fact that I'm a fan of dark isekais doesn't help. That however is its smallest issue. Once you get through the well-made beginning, story starts displaying poor planning, inexperience, and improvisation of its authors.

The problem of OP MC
And the biggest issue is definitely the fact that MC becomes stupidly OP, invincible, and literally a god, just few chapters in. That's a huge disappointment because the concepts I've been reading this manga for are no longer there. At some point the struggle, story and survival cease to exist, and you're left with OP MC and his dull harem.

Other characters
Other characters than MC are terrible, and even if there was some promise for some of them, all women got degraded to sex objects without personalities (they seem like copies of each other) and i dont remember any impressive male characters either. Perhaps it's better to focus on quality than quantity. There's indeed a lot of characters and they're all the same. Can't speak about enemies because we simply didn't get to know them, as they all quickly became food.

Duels and Battles
Duels let alone battles are showed terribly, such attempts were painful to look at and it was hard to figure out what are they showing. Even if I could bear with the ways simple fights were portrayed, its different matter when it comes to battles. Not only was the 'strategy' either completely absent or half-assed, but also the panels was headache-inducing.

== Overall 3/10 ==
So if you like the struggle and want to read a story about survival attempts in a dark medieval fantasy world then go on and start reading it, but you will stop like I did. It's heavily based on slime manga/novel and it even performs the same mistakes, unironically characters become stupidly op stupidly fast in both series. What a waste.

At first I truly enjoyed it and it even got me some ideas, but the quality drops quickly and readers are left with mixed feelings. I dropped this after 34 chapters, don't know if I'll come back.

This manga barely has any characters until +12 chapters in. You mostly just end up reading narration about what happened and all the "characters" a just different flavour of generic goblin with 1 or 2 pieces of clothing that will tell them apart.

This manga dwelves a lot into what mc gains through eating stuff and most of the start thats about all you will read. He eats something, gains new ability and rinse and repeat.

Mc's moral values flip from "I dont like women being raped" to "I will make these prisoners of war rape slaves". Though he isnt a heartless bastard, it still needs ...
