Preliminary (196/? chp)
Vinland Saga is a masterpiece for many reasons. I think the target audience of Yukimara with the series being Seinen is so blatantly apparent within the narrative. I would recommend Vinland Saga to young men, specifically those without a strong father figure, as what separates it from other animanga is that is genuinely life changing.

Story-
A deceivingly meaningful story, as what could be deciphered as a tale of revenge within the very early chapters blossoms into the struggle of morality dawning upon Thorfinn. Yukimara manages to bring a barbaric image of Vikings into a fleshed out story of revenge, sorrow, redemption, brotherhood, and guilt. Thorfinn ...

Story - Not your typical revenge story. Almost funny in a way, if it were not so brutal. The revenge arc is fairly interesting, where we mostly see Askeladd's and later Canute's characters being developed, with some of Thorkell as well. Thorfinn got practically no character development during the revenge arc and only really developed after he became a slave. I found the farmland saga quite refreshing and not at all boring compared to the previous arcs, even though there was less action.

Art - Outstanding. On par with Berserk I would say, although cleaner and slightly less detailed.

Character - Thorfinn is strange, I ...

A gritty historical adventure manga with a strong story, great character development and beautiful artwork makes this manga one with few peers.

I only have two very minor issues, I feel that at times the pacing of the story is slightly out and some scenes could benefit from another page of 'screen time'. I also would like some of the side characters to have a more fleshed out story but this could be done to reduce bloat which I completely understand.

I personally find the art style to be exquisite and the attention to detail makes for breathtaking landscapes and stunning battles. The intense fights are made ...

There are very few series I have read or watched that I would give a perfect 10, but believe me when I say this series is a masterpiece. This series at first glance seems like your typical story of revenge, but after reading a few chapters you realize it is so much more.

Story: This story has it all, in terms of truly depicting all the emotion included with drama such as despair, anger, revenge, sadness, repentance, hope, and bearing with sin while moving forward, very few works compare. the author takes his time with the story, the first half is a prologue, but ...

SPOILERS AHEAD

This manga is over-hyped. Story would have been half way decent if it didn't go and kill the only interesting character (Askeladd) and then devolve into some lame moral preaching that doesn't even make sense. The sudden character "developments" are way too contrived. Canute went from being a bumbling idiot whose only redeeming quality was being able to cook a decent stew- to being an authoritative prince plotting to overthrow his father- all because of the empty words of a drunk priest and a half baked epiphany? REALLY? Just like that? He got high on some words? The guy who got high on berserker ...

Revenge, murder, sorrow, emptiness, redemption, and aspiration. The story of Vinland Saga takes place in the 11th century during the age of Vikings. This tale follows Thorfinn on his path of revenge to his tale of redemption and aspiring to be different. From immersive storytelling, to the beautiful art style, showing how brutal the age of Vikings were, Makoto Yukimura creates a masterfully written story that everyone should read.

Let's first start with the story. I will try not to go into much detail in order to refrain from spoilers but here we go. The story starts out with the main character Thorfinn joining his ...

This is the First Time I've Encountered the "BEST of the BEST"

-How it was done- 8
the story were told in great style, I've never seen anyone who would put such a prologue in 50 chapters, or 50 months, I mean, that's a gamble in Manga Making. The Art was Superb, it was able to give the expression and the message without showing too much scene. The characters design here are not the best looking, but the best in showing who they are. But the background is superb, which is hard to pull.

So far, the only disadvantage of this manga is the the Chapters Story, this ...

Vinland Saga is the best thing I have ever read. It is different from many other stories, especially ones with Vikings. It has one of the best stories I have ever seen, Thorfinn's journey is phenomenal. The art is also beautiful. It has great paneling and beautiful character designs. However, my favorite part about it, is the characters. Characters like Thorfinn, Hild, Askeladd, and Canute are some of my favorites in manga, with Thorfinn being my favorite of all time. It has some of the greatest development of all time with many characters. Saying I loved it is an understatement, I enjoyed it more than ...

This story begins as a revenge story and transforms itself into deeper things, the meaning of life, guilt, redemption, creating peace, war, alienation from society.

it's about the suffering that the cycle of revenge creates, about the difficulty of redemption and the weight of guilt, it's about the meaninglessness of war and the violent human nature, about the clash between what we want to do and what society expects us to do, it's about growth and development of charachter, and it's ultimately about trying to create true peace, if this task is even possible and the different ways that can lead to a world without ...

In my opinion, the Vinland Saga manga is one of the best Seinen I've ever read because it delves into many philosophical and existentialist issues that humanity carries over time, in addition to not lacking in the immersion aspects of the period and Viking beliefs . I rate Vinland Saga as one of the big three Seinens ever created along with Berserk and Vagabond.
The great turn that occurs in the manga fits very well with the accumulation of consequences generated by the protagonist's decisions, which makes us feel as a reader a heavy atmosphere, we can understand what was going through Thorfinn's head ...

Recently I've read "Vagabond" only to know that it went on hiatus, thus being depressed I found a similar manga called Vinland saga and lo it was as if I hit a gold mine. Vinland saga might be similar to berserk and vagabond, but hell no!!! It's actually closer to Fullmetal Alchemist.

Hatred, revenge, failure, realization and finally redemption that what Vinland saga is about. What I found amusing was not the brutality of wars but the ideals or philosophy it conveys effectively.

In this story there are no dragons, there are no mythical beasts, perhaps that’s what it is as of now, but it's just an ...

Overall: 10

Vinland Saga by Makoto Yukimura is a personal favorite of mine. I think it is widely underrated (in the west at least). The art and the character development are nothing short of masterful.

Story:
Vinland Saga is a historical fiction based on Vikings, the norman conquest of England, and the eventual voyage to Vinland (AKA North America). The story can basically be split up into 3 parts. Without spoiling anything, the first part is about revenge. There is a lot of good, realistic fighting in this part. Most people fall in love with Vinland Saga for its realistic depiction of Viking warfare. The second part is about ...

Vinland Saga depicts a mythology in the most realistic from. You’ll be disgusted seeing the horrors of war yet before you throw down the manga you’ll realize it has established a tight grip on you. In the most basic form the manga deals with war and slavery. But the allure of the manga lies in its depiction of revenge and forgiveness. The story follows the adventures and misadventures of Thorfinn who after witnessing the murder of his father swears revenge. Revenge can drive a man insane and its effect on 6 year old boy is incomprehensible.

Manga depicts gore scenes with grotesque beauty. True nature of ...

I was very impressed by the historical setting and eye for detail, the underlying story at first appeared to be one of bloody vengeance, but the MC makes such a drastical turn in character that i found it hard to continue during later chapters (around 90-ish chapters in).

It's not that the story isn't engaging, it's just, such a far cry from how it started off that the MC just isn't as engaging to follow anymore, to me at least.

I came in hoping to find the Norse counterpart to "Kingdom", but was in that regard; dissapointed.

Vinland Saga is well-drawn, very compelling in the first 60--70 ...

After almost 2 years, I recommenced Vinland Saga after dropping it due to not being good enough TO my past standards. The only thing it took me was to develop a quite considerable fascination for history and... BOOM! I gave it another try, and I loved it.

The story got me glued to the screen at the very start and all the way until chapter 100. Incredible characters, relentless action, smart schemes, character development, historically accurate world-building, and yes, I've said historically accurate. The fact that the author has even bothered to investigate enough so as to give accuracy to some dates, events and characters says ...

I just can't find any faults with this series..

Story 10/10
It somehow manages to make the very barbaric idea of Vikings into a beautiful tale of loss, revenge, discovery and redemption. I won't spoil anything because this is a series best experienced on one's own. Also some great humour involved with the more charismatic characters.

Art 9/10
It only improves as the series progresses with a very consistent and rather cartoon-like art-style for it's violent backdrop that fits perfectly, with great expressions on character's expressions. This battles are barbaric and brutally wonderful, and it's times of peace are wonderfully depicted with stunning attention to detail.

Characters 10/10
This is where ...

*Non-spoiler*

While the story contained some of the greatest highpoints included in the first season of the anime the manga continues with a very blurry end point that contains zero knowledge of the path to.

The art of the manga in my opinion contains the same qualities as a cold glass of water; each panel is perfectly scaled, consistently clean and the action is sharp consistently.

The characters are enjoyable are the only driving force for me in the story as the plot is incredibly mediocre. The character development of Thors, Askeladd, and Thorfinn is exceptional, and Thorfinns development is the only saving grace of the later ...

Vinland Saga tries to be thoughtful and reach for the stars. But it does so in such a boring manner that can't be excused when many other stories, despite how much wish-fulfillment they use, do a much better job at executing the same themes.

The prologue makes it clear this will be a manga where the themes are prioritized, as it dedicates itself to defying that notion that being a badass means being a bloodthirsty psychopath. And I applaud that. But it's not entertaining to watch, hell, even before Thorfinn becomes a better person the story was lackluster.

We're introduced to Thors, Thorfinn's dad, who is meant ...

Vinland Saga is so good that it gave me realization that most of us were so lucky to live in an era free of war and not deprived of living. Way back, I had thought of seeing and experiencing a war or some sort but then after finishing the manga up to the latest chapter (198), it made it clear that I really don't seek anything that involves any violence in the slightest. only a handful of manga would make a lazy kind of me to make a review like this and it's my proof of saying that this manga is worth recommending.

Spoilers for the prologue for Vinland Saga

“The best revenge is to be unlike him who performed the injury.” -Marcus Aurelius

From a revenge story to a story about compassion and fixing your wrongs. The story takes place in the 11th century, the prologue takes place primarily during the invasion of England by the Norse. Vinland saga follows the story of Thorfinn who is so led by revenge and hatred for another that it controls every action and every fiber in his being. The rich storytelling to the complex character development and how their issues are conquered, and finally the art style which is one of the ...
