The Natsume Yuujinchou novel is a collection of entirely new stories not present in the anime or manga. That is, unless I’ve already forgot about them being present, which is entirely possible. Also, the English translation is only available up to the 3rd chapter of 2nd volume and has been stuck at that point for quite a while, so that is the part my review is for.

While it’s not something I would call bad, it’s definitely something I would call boring. The stories hardly have a point. They are not witty, they don’t have a message, they just sort of… exist. Which, to be fair, ... is kinda close to what the original work is, just that the manga at least tries to have a point. These aren’t engaging stories, these are just pages filled with meaningless happenings until the word limit is reached and it can go to print. I’ve read this few hours ago and I’m already struggling with remembering the story details. And not because of bad memory, I’m suspecting it’s more because there plainly wasn’t much that would caught the reader’s interest. I might have almost fell asleep at some point.

The art is weird, the style looks like out of a BL novel and does not fit with Natsume Yuujinchou, which is confusing as the credits list the actual author of Natsume as an illustrator for the novel. I have no idea what happened here.

Overall, if you’re a fan of Natsume just looking for more content, any content, you might find some enjoyment here. But for a casual reader, I wouldn’t recommend.
