It's Noh-A's first day at Amityville High School, and her reception is chilly to say the least. Brutal might be a better description! Decapitated but not dead (or is she??), Noh-A quickly realizes that nothing is as it appears at Amityville High where paranormal creatures battle for supremacy. Caught in the crossfire, Noh-A may have to rely on the unlikely (and possibly unreliable) aid of the most sinister student at Amityville... the deadly Jack Frost!
I really liked Jack Frost. It definitely had some issues, big ones, but I enjoyed it. It also was annoyingly similar to Hellsing, in the sense that Jack and Alucard are basically the same person.
Jack Frost starts out super slow. Girl transfers to new school, sees creepy guy she labels "Smirky," takes her seat, and all hell breaks loose. Her head comes off but she doesn't die. Cue first mystery that takes forever to be fully fleshed out. Literally half the story. Now, there's nothing inherently wrong with that, however, this felt more like the author wanted to write a ton of action
and didn't really bother fleshing out the story until he realized he'd written half a story that was basically going nowhere. While I felt that the ending came together ok, it was really rushed and felt thrown together.
I mostly enjoyed the art. The style wasn't exactly for me, but it was ok. The fight scenes, which took up a large portion of the story, seemed to mostly be large blocks of black and white blur. That may be because there was so much fighting that I started skimming over it to find story points, but either way, there's a lot of fighting and a lot of movement in the fights, so it does blur some.
All the characters were pretty one dimensional. The author seemed to try giving them more depth sometimes, but really only succeeded in making them act really out of character at inopportune times. The ending showed a lot of progress with a couple of the characters, but looking back on it, you can't really see how they got from point A to point B. Noh-A is really the only one to change at all, and her character growth was overall enjoyable.
I hold story and character growth in very high esteem, but I also really love insane characters beating the crap out of other insane characters in a supernatural setting of blood and death. It was a fun read, even if I wanted to rip my hair out sometimes trying to figure out WHAT exactly was going on with the plot. I don't feel like I wasted my time and if a sequel was ever released, I would totally jump on it. I want more of Amityville and the characters.
The art for this manga was very good. I found the cover interesting so I decided to read it. Man was I ever disappointed! If you've read Hellsing this will probably seem AWFULLY familiar. It almost feels like the characters from the story were pulled out, given different clothes and names, and put in an ecchi high school.
If you've never read Hellsing and enjoy manga where there's nonstop action, then that image of an already done story won't be ruined for you and perhaps you may even enjoy Jack Frost. If you have then chances are you probably wont find this near as enthralling.
read one volume and chances are I won't be picking it up again, at least not for a very, very long time.
I'm really tired of people writing bad reviews of Jack Frost just because they assume it's a "Hellsing Rip Off" The story is fantastic, the art is gorgeous and very detailed. Granted...the manwha is not for everybody! It contains a looot of gorey and panty shots, so what? I'm really hooked on this manwha. One of the best I've read so far.
The only one publishing it is Yen Press so I suggest you get your hands on it and start reading it instead of band wagoning like the rest of the idiots here just because it's cool to hate on something that's been done
before. Take it through your thick heads, in anime / manga / manwha everything has been done before!!
Have I mentioned that the art is GOOD? LIKE REALLY REALLY GOOD?! You have to buy the manwha to really appreciate the THING and not just read the scanlation of it online.
The story is pretty interesting so far, it's the only manwha I've sat down and tried to read it all in one go! IT'S THAT GOOD. So i'm gonna give it an 8 because there are parts here and there that drift off, but it just keeps getting better and better.
There's a lot of great characters too! Too bad people are so close minded that they won't give this manwha a chance because 1) you can't be a true otaku and like manwha / and manga herp-a-derp they're just trying to copy manga herp-a-derp 2) oooh this looks familiar!! HELLSING?? -__-"
