One word that could sum up Kyou no Kira-kun for me is... bittersweet.

Story: 8/10

I don't think the story is very common but it's not original either. I mean when you say very common shoujo, for me it's:

"Unpopular girl will fall in love with the most popular guy in school. Many things will happen like girl confessing to boy but will get rejected but in the end they will end up together... but another guy will appear."

Something like that. Well Kyou no Kira-kun still has the same theme of "unpopular girl" and "popular boy" but there's a catch. The boy is sick and has only a ... year left to live. I also said it's not that original since I think I've read something like that before.

But what makes this manga special to me are the words/quotes/converstaion that were being used. It's really very touching and will hit you very hard in your heart. It made me cry a lot. And it feels like you could really learn a lot from this in real life... that time is really precious!

I do find the art really cute and refreshing too. It also brings out the beauty of the story especially the scenes that made me cry. They were beautiful.

I don't have anything to say. I love the girl and boy protagonists a lot. I really think they suit each other a lot. Another reason I came to love this manga! Especially the boy, Kira. He's really so precious.

Wow I'm glad I read this manga. Though at first I was torn between "I shouldn't have read it" and "I'm glad I read it" but in the end, I'm really glad I did! Even though when I try to think what will happen to them in the future and it will make me cry, I still look forward to it! I really want to know what will happen regardless if it's a happy or sad ending.

But another good thing about this manga is even though it is "tragedy," it is still very CUTE and SWEET. While it made me cry a lot, it also made me smile a lot too. It's such a very touching and cute manga! It's really worth reading it!

I found this manga by chance while scrolling through the "Romance" tag on a manga site.

I just spent the past 2 hours reading the entire series.

I have been in tears now for 20 minutes.

The story appears rather simple: boy meets girl, boy has a fatal illness and will die within a year. Despite the seemingly plain premise, what the story does so well, is making you fall in love with the characters.

While every character starts out plain or stereotypical, the depth of every one of them is simply so encapturing. Not only do they keep you turning the page, but they also ... give the heartwarming story a fresh breath of life (no pun intended).

This story will force you to fall in love with a parrot faster than you can blink.

Not only the characters, but the story itself has a life of its own. It's really a journey as it takes you through the beauty and fragility of life and how life should always have a meaning.

It'll break your heart for different reasons than you expected, but it will also warm your heart for those same reasons.

Honestly, one of the best reads I've had in a long time.

I definitely recommend if you're tired of the stereotypical shoujo character tropes and are sturdy enough for an emotional rollercoaster :).

The premise is fairly common, with the presence of manga's such as koizora, the theme of tragedy seems to reel in to both genders appealing to the readers sympathy.

The story starts off with a girl named Nino who is a shy girl who has a funky parrot who she likes talking too, and of course the main protagonist who is told he will die in less than a year.

The characters are fairly normal for a shoujo manga, there is nothing special about them. Apart from the fact ... that there is tragedy involved theres nothing too special about this manga. It is definitely worth a read though as it is not horrible at all, but could be done better.

I honestly thought this manga would be your typical Shoujo manga (which I definitely do like) however this manga brought up so much more. The lead character is an introvert caused by a past trauma whose only friend is a bird. She befriends a boy in her class after finding out a very troubling secret about him. Under any other circumstances they would've probably never befriended each other.

The story is well-developed and the characters also develop throughout the story (especially the main character). What I also really love about this manga is that the author made the main male lead a crybaby. This is honestly ... rarely seen in Shoujo manga, and surprised me because it fit the story so well.

1. Well developed characters and backstories for the lead characters
2. Unique characteristics added to the lead characters
3. An emotional story that makes you think
4. A heart-warming read.

Like a previous reviewer has said the premise of the story is pretty common. The male assumed love interest has some sort of disease and knows he's going to die. Where this differs from other plot lines alike I think is the tone of the manga. The tone unlike others of the same kind of theme is a lot more light hearted. Obviously death and disease being the main theme its still slightly depressing but in a more bittersweet way than a pessimistic way.

One of the nicest things about the manga was the way in which the main characters are characterized. The protagonist is ... a little more interesting than other protagonists in shoujo manga while she isn't one of the more typical crying and dependent protagonist she isn't one of the counter-typed, outlandish strong female leads either. She is definitely an interesting character. The same can be said for the main male lead he is also interesting, I wouldn't want to spoil anything about his character but he can come across as a typical 'bad boy' type of character to begin with but he is anything but. Let's say he is more of the typical dependent female protagonist then the main character is.

Though there is an over arching plot and some longer plot lines it is mainly written in a kind of episodic way, each chapter having a different plot line within the larger over arching plot. In some ways its better this way and other ways it not. If you like the kind of episodic way mangas like Usotsuki no Lily is written you may enjoy this one for the same styling.

Based on the fact the manga has yet to be translated completely into English is still ongoing I don't really have a good idea of the entire story but I am liking where it is going. There are a few complexities to the plot that could be explored further that I am looking forward too however there are already 6 volumes of the manga and I don't think given the number of volumes that the plot and story will continue to consistently well written.

In general the art style is quite nice. The characters don't seem to have much variety between being bishounens and bishoujos but despite this its generally quite pretty(?) to look at. Not really fond of how the adults are drawn they all seem to look no older than their mid-30's, where they should look a lot older especially in comparison to the main characters. eg. The protagonists mother looks more like her sister. The art is above average regardless and in collaboration with the well written story and good characters I would say overall, this a good if not very good manga.

3 chapters on update:

Some extra characters have been introduced to develop the plot albeit in a quite cliche way, still enjoying it regardless.

There was a really endearing very short one-shot extra (chapter 9.5) would seriously recommend you don't skip it, made me laugh. Wouldn't have minded a series about them, given that the protagonist was changed a bit. (She was kind of if not very annoying)

This opinion might not be applicable to everyone, as I read from an explicitly disabled perspective, but:

Kyou no Kira-kun is a cute, average shoujo manga with a gripping premise and flawed execution. The art is cute, the main relationship dynamic is wholesome and enjoyable, and the call to action is novel and intriguing. At times it's a very powerful and emotional narrative about mortality and love, but usually it doesn't quite reach that level of impact.

I had a few minor hang ups: a arguably unnecessary student/adult relationship with an immoral school nurse, Rei's entire character, the direction of the ending. But I think the main ... reason I can't love it is the use of disabled pain for dramatic effect.

As someone with a progressively worsening illness, I threw myself into this narrative like a drowning man toward shore. I wanted to relate to the fears and struggles in the story, and largely I did. But as the manga bores on it becomes painfully clear that his health is worsening for the build up of dramatic tension, and that he has medical emergencies at pivotal moments. His health becomes a narrative tool, and it begins to feel dehumanizing.

(Ending spoilers) In the end they even subvert the expectation the story had been building (which I had been looking forward to for the catharsis of it), and it really feels like they either 1) ran out of story ideas and needed to wrap things up, 2) wanted to shy away from hard realities of being terminally ill and, when finished profiting off the sad drama of it, refused to commit to telling a fair disability narrative, 3) desperately realized they wanted to give the audience a happy ending and looked for the easiest way to do it. And while a happy ending for a disabled person is never necessarily a bad thing, the execution felt cheap in light of the entire premise of the story being built on a now broken promise. (Which they then tried to rectify by putting the burden of death on the bird, like some sort of manga messiah satisfying the sacred conditions of the text? Absolutely villainous imo.)

In the end, it was still a cute story that I ultimately enjoyed and don't regret reading. I just think there was a lot of untapped potential and a bit of insensitivity, and it's not the masterpiece some people make it out to be (though it could have been).

Cutest manga ever.

Nino is a shy girl who befriends, or is befriended by, Kira who is told he's only been given 1 year to live. It's a story of he developing relationship between Nino and Kira and how the people around them interact and grow.

The art is stunning, Nino is like the cutest, sweetest person ever, Sensei her pet parrot is also an interesting addition making this an even more unique manga, Kira is a wild yet lonely boy with the nicest hair ever. And we're just seeing a new person being introduced called ... Yabe who is an old/ex (?) friend of Kira.

Im just talk about Nino quickly because I've been trawling through so many shoujo mangas with stupid girls who cry. Nino is different. At first I thought it was just a typical shoujo manga where the girl is just shy and then the guy makes her popular. I was wrong. She cries occasionally but only at very hurtful things. She's uber shy after having a terrifying experience (of which we are yet to learn about more in depth) and Kira almost giver her her voice back. Their relationship is quite magical (just like a rainbow, you'll understand this reference if you've read it). It does have a few cliches here and there but to be honest its fairly original and so cute and sweet. It really touches you heart, gets you in the feels!

Read it and go on a massive feel journey. Bring tissues, crying is a given but it's so worth it.

So I first found out about this series from instagram. From there, I read the summary of the story and it honestly captured my attention. Before this, most of the series I read are only the type that makes your heart go "kya kya" or "doki doki" but with the premise of this story, I was honestly in it for the tears. When I read the first chapter, I remembered how tears quickly ran down from my eyes, and just with that chapter alone, I was already prepared to be hurt from this melodrama series.

Well, I will say this, Kyou no Kira-kun is probably one ... of my FAVORITE shoujo mangas ever.

First off, I think this story is definitely different from all the other stories I have read, because in this story you have the fear/thought that Kira might actually die. I think Mikimoto-sensei was able to wove the stories beautifully. While you have the other shoujo tropes like love triangles and the like, this was actually the first time in a long while that I did not get tired of it. I also like (despite how heartbreaking it was) that the story of Kira dying was woven wonderfully into this manga. For me it showed another layer from the story and that even if both are aware that the time they have with each other might be cut short, you can still see how much both treasure each other. I'd also like to add how I think the addition of Sensei (the parrot) was a cute idea. Normally, I dislike having people with pets and stuff but I thought Sensei was able to add a funny and sometimes serious matter into this story. Also I have to say, this series probably has one of my best confession scenes ever! If I have to critique something here, I would have to say that I felt like the last couple of chapters were a bit rushed and could definitely have been more fleshed out.

For the art, I thorougly enjoyed it as well. I think Mikimoto-sensei was able to draw everything properly. I honestly love how she drew the people and all the little details. I love the little chibis she draws of them everytime they are surprised or something. In fact, I sometimes find myself chuckling at the cutie chibis she does. Also, out of all the mangas I have read, I believe Mikimoto-sensei draws the most painful tears ever. I think a big reason on why I teared up on this series so much was because of how realistic and how painful she draws the tears!

Next, the characters are also a huge reason why I continued reading this. Honestly, I love the leads so so much. I think they'll probably go down as my favorite couple. This is the type of relationship I like to see folks. You can honestly see how both care for one another and you can honestly see how both support each other and how both have a positive influence into each other's life. For Kira, Ninon was the reason he decided he wanted to live, and was the reason he gave up on his lewd lifestyle. You can also see him open up more because of Ninon. For Ninon, Kira was the reason she became more outgoing and became more sociable and more brave. I love reading the journey both of them went through. And like I said above, this one had (one of) the best confessions ever. Aside from the 2 leads, I also like Sensei and the parents of the kids. I find it funny how even their parents have their own personalities, like Ninon's mom is a cosplayer and Kira's dad is a crossdresser. Aside from that I didn't really like Yabe or Rei much but I do love their friendship with each other. Yabe and Kira's friendship was also nicely shown throughout the story and made the readers understand why Yabe acts/acted that way.

Overall, as what I have said before, this is one of my favorite shoujo mangas ever. I think everything was done almost perfectly. Also sometimes when you read too much shoujo manga, it can't be helped that you can see the same things happen over and over, but I thought this was not the case here. I actually saw a lot of fresh things/scenes happen and I just really loved this series so much. Honestly, I don't think my words will ever do this series justice. So if you are looking for a something to read, just do yourself a favor and read Kyou no Kira-kun.

It’s a typical shoujo in many ways but there are some different factors such as a parrot character and the fact that the mc has a year left. Nino is a barely noticable girl who sits in the corner of the classroom and has a bird on her shoulder. She doesn’t want to be involved with people and thinks having her bird, family is good enough. On the opposite end, Kira is a person who looks down on people and is a playboy, doesn’t care about her feelings at first, also is a crybaby. On the earlier chapters, it made me mad because of some ... characters. Everybody was kissing without consent or feelings, adult characters were playing with teenagers. Kira is usual shoujo male who threatens other males not to come near Nino when he is the one who makes her cry and does things with girls. Nino was too pure and wholesome and Kira wasn’t worthy with that personality, at least he starts changing towards the middle of the manga and it gets much better. The characters are shown as steoreotypical and boring at first but they gain some personality and growth. Apart from that, it was unrealistic to make two rejected people in the same friend group fall in love with each other just because it is convenient.

It was full of shoujo manga tropes but it doesn’t make it bad. It’s easy to read and finishes quickly as I read it in two days. The art is cute, their faces were expressive. I loved the addition of the parrot Sensei as he was the main reason why I started this manga. The story is interesting and development is nicely done.

Overall, if you’re in the mood for a quick light-hearted shoujo manga, you might enjoy this!

First of all, i wasn't expecting this end. Truly, i wasn't.

This mangá called my attention by the title and cover, i thought it was really beautiful, and it was! I didn't read the synopsis, actually, so i just dived in the history expecting something cute. I was wrong and right at the same time. It IS a really cute history, the characters development are really good and intensive, especially from Nino and Yabe. I mean, Kira too, but those two was really good, but Nino and Yabe was even more than i thought.

Well, let's go to the specifics scores:

It's a really ... cute art, but sometimes it was a liiiiittle bit weird. Just a little. The hair was my favorite part of the artistic details, especially Nino's. The "hair history" in Japan is really present in the manga, and i loved it.

How I find t this story? Very interested and funny way, I have profile on pinterest and if i finding manga pages I always saving and then if I will be able to find the tittle I always finding the good web to read it, This time happen exactly same way as with before with other stories I found it to read.
Sometime are short and might disappointing but I will getting to the point here.

I have high intentions from each stories I read, ale also it is same about the art and of course the characters.
So about art at first point, ... maybe in some situations was't exactly details on character faces but any way I love it, specially the main characters and the parrot, it was amazing for me, I love it Kira- kun he was so amazing and of course she Nino - chan.
From the beginning the story keep you in such emotions, which I love i to the end, I was hell crying aww when I getting in to great story it is just happen to me.
Also when I started to read it was no way to leave it for later, I had to finished, it is doesn't matter if I will be disappointing, if I start reading I have my rule to finished at least it is just with manga, not with normal books.
I started cry from the befogging when I found out what it is going out and I had to know imminently what will be happen next.

So if you love when action keeps you in emotions it is such amazing story which will keeps you to the end, at least if you like romance in the story.

If you're looking for a sweet heartwarming manga, this is it. It follows traditional shoujo tropes. With the high school bad boy falling for the sweet and shy girl. It does take on a little of a darker twist, but overall it's a light hearted story. I would recommend this if you're looking to entertain yourself for the night, you can easily pull an allnighter and finish the nine volumes.The illustrations are super cute and pretty with the panels popping out of the screen.
There aren't a lot of characters and every single one is really well established.
It follows the story of Nino and Kira ... and the hardships they go through together as a young couple. They both help each other grow in a pretty unimaginable way. If you don't want to wait fifty plus chapters for the MC to kiss or have any sort of interaction this is it, it gets straight to the point pretty soon into the story, and you can enjoy the characters falling in love without waiting twenty years.
