This manga has gotten some kneejerk bad reviews due to the author's previous work, but those are unwarranted and Yuritetsu deserves a chance.
Recommended for those who are at least two of the following: train nerds, Japan tourism/geography enthusiasts, CGDCT connoisseurs, and yuri fans.
Yuritetsu is your usual cute girls school club manga with yuri undertones. This time, it's a railway club exploring Japan.
The girls are drawn in a very soft, cutesy artstyle. This gives the manga a very relaxed, healing atmosphere and makes it suited for CGDCT lovers. The girls also blush at each other a lot.
The trains, train stations and other buildings and technology are
...
drawn in a detailed way for train and tourism enthusiasts.
The basic idea of the story is the girls riding trains all over Japan and visiting various train stations/bridges/tunnels and nearby sights. It works as a tourism guide. The characters include different types of train Otakus: Maron likes station food, Mamiko takes photos and Hakutsuru goes on anime pilgrimages. These offer different points of view to the locations visited. The manga is very focused on train travel; usual events of high school life like festivals and part-time work are skimmed over so the girls can get on their next journey. Of course, typical CGDCT antics ensue during the travels. Swimsuit, shower and onsen fanservice scenes are included.
The overarching plot focuses on the shy Hatsune accidentally becoming the president of her school's train club despite knowing very little about trains. With the aid of the other three members of the club, she slowly learns about Japan's railways and the sights they have to offer. On the way, she develops as a person, and builds her relationships to her clubmates. As they grow closer, the other girls start all developing feelings for Hatsune, turning the series into a yuri harem. While there is some tease of explicit romance, the manga disappointingly ends up maintaning the status quo of the harem state. As such, there is no proper plot to the end of the manga; merely a series of train travels and cute antics.
