After dedicating 3 months of my life to catching up to this behemoth of a show, I feel obligated to say something about my journey. Was it worth it? To be able to tell people that I've caught up to One Piece, yes. Was it worth it in terms of the story and plot? Eh. One Piece really needs no introduction to the anime scene and I heard about it years before taking the plunge and reading over 1000 chapters. Everyone around me always talked on and on about Whitebeard this, Wano that, and I guess you could say I wanted a taste of that ... drink. And now here we are, 1014 chapters and 3 months later, I can finally say "I'm caught up to One Piece". Now with the burning question, did it live up to the hype? For the most part, no, but some parts, yes. Overall, I would say I'm satisfied with my experience. Not happy, not overjoyed, not sad, just satisfied.

Story: 7

Some times the story was at a solid 8 and some times it was at an eye gouging 5-6. So I'll just leave it at an average 7. No one really voices this opinion much so I'll take the center stage in saying it. Pre time skip was far better than post time skip. The only arc I actually liked in post time skip was Whole Cake, the rest were a hollow shell of what One Piece was. The best section of One Piece's story was from Water 7-Marineford (Minus Thriller Bark). After that the story had a pretty sudden halt in quality and pacing. However, during that Water 7-Marineford span, I would totally say One Piece was worth the read. I was knocking out 40+ chapters per day during those arcs. Enies Lobby is easily my favorite arc and it is a contender for being on my top arcs list. I'll go ahead and show my ranking of the arcs so you can see my thoughts.

(I know Enies Lobby is technically a sub arc of Water 7, but since its such a step up in quality and it being actually longer than Water 7, I think it deserves it's own spot).

I want to say One Piece has some of the best plot in anime, but in reality, that credit should go to it's world building. Like 95% of all arcs in One Piece follow the exact same formula over and over again. But thanks to it's fantastic world building, people seem blind to that fact. The Straw Hats show up, main villain introduced and shows how much they screwed up the island. Straw Hats go to attack main villain, main villains henchmen hierarchy shows up and slows them down. Backstories of arc characters and how the island ended up that way ensue, and then the Straw Hats come up with a long shot 1 in a million chance of success plan that always works and then Luffy has a final fight with main villain. Giant feast at the end, Marines come but the Straw Hats escape at the last second, They go to next island, repeat. Every. Single. Arc. Has this exact same formula and it's pretty blatant after the 3rd arc using it. Whole Cake was a entire carbon copy of Water 7. Instead of Robin it was Sanji, instead of CP9 it was the Big Mom pirates, instead of Lucci it was Katakuri. It was just so noticeable, but luckily it was made very well. Overall, I think OP is carried heavily by its masterful world building but I digress, some of the arcs were solid on their own.

Read the manga and the art style was very solid, it takes dedication to produce that kind of quality for over 20 years.

Characters: 8

Along with world building, another thing One Piece does very well is developing their side characters. Though tedious at times, you spend some time in the arcs to build up the backstories of arc characters and why they need the Straw Hats help etc. Sometimes I did feel it was unnecessary while other times I felt that it enhanced the story ten fold. As for the main crew, I think most of them are extremely solid, however I still hate Usopp, don't know why, I just do. Luffy is for the most part fine, but he still plays on several cliche shonen mc tropes. The villains in the arcs are hit or miss, CP9 were fantastic while Caeser The Clown and Gecko Moria were less than interesting. A lot of some times it was good and some times it was bad. But the pro's out weigh the con's in terms of characters. And Mihawk is the best character in One Piece sorry bout it.

Enjoyment: 6

Once again, during Enies Lobby it was an 8-8.5 and during East Blue it was around a 4-5. My Enjoyment drastically changed depending on the arcs, but there were more enjoyable arcs than not enjoyable so I'll give it the benefit of a 6. It really just depended on how well the characters flowed in the arc and especially if the main villain was an actual force to be reckoned with. I was actually worried the Straw Hats would lose against Dolflamingo and CP9, but I wasn't the least bit intimidated by Hordy Jones. These factors made it impossible to predict whether I would like an arc or not, but overall it was a fun ride.

Overall: 6.5

To be honest I think I started and finished One Piece just so I could say I've finished it rather than actually being invested in the show. But you can only read so many chapters before starting to take part in the journey this manga takes you on. There were a lot of sometimes I liked it and some times I didn't in that review but that's mainly because of how long this show is. Some arcs could be it's own show so my opinion changes every time they switch gears to a new arc. I think One Piece is objectively a very solid show but it did not personally bring me in on several occasions so unfortunately I can't join the crowd of people saying it's one of the best anime ever made. On the contrary, I won't be on the side calling it an overrated dumpster fire, so rest assured. It's just a nice show that gave me a satisfying experience, nothing more, nothing less.

I'm actually trying to understand why this manga in the top three.

1010 chapters of non-since structure. repeated scenarios and ambiguous power in addition to bad character development like any other normal manga (low-rated manga).

From the beginning up to the now, the same scenario where Luffy loses the fight and wakes up to beat his enemy, how many times this scenario has been repeated?

1010 chapters contain disgusting character development, going into each chapter and hoping that this chapter will increase something in rating criteria, but unfortunately, nothing changes.

Creating many characters that will make the reader happy, because when one piece fan joins any anime discussion he ... will mention that "there are many characters in the story! how great Oda is! how can he create this amount of characters!".

It is significantly hard to write a review of any manga that is more than 1000 chapters, and especially one as popular as One Piece and make it worthwhile, but I think there's a way.

Simply put I started One Piece expecting to give up around couple hundred chapters in when I got bored, when it was too filler heavy, or when it felt like it wasn't valuing my time. 1000 chapters later, I would honestly say it never even got close to any of those marks. I am honestly quite shocked because I intended to be extra critical.

There's a reason this ... series has the fans it has, has gone on for 1000 chapters, and still is popular as ever. It's extremely high quality, well writing and has characters that are interesting.

You can get a good grasp of the positives just by reading the first few chapters, so let's focus more on why might someone not like this manga.

One complaint I've heard from someone I trust was he didn't like how the character's don't grow and develop. Over 1000 chapters, I do believe that's incorrect, but they really don't grow that much outside of a few points in the story. The thing is, I don't see that as a problem. Luffy and his crew are the focus of the story in the way Frodo carrying the ring is the focus of the story. The story is just the ability of the author to build a vast and interesting world. Every major character Luffy meets whether friend or foe gets development and usually a back story. Every villain is unique and interesting, every location is fresh and new and novel. I'm surprised I can't think of a single concept that feels like it was used more than once, outside of "Fishing villages" early on, and yet each one is unique. That's why I love the story, and if you want a lot of interpersonal development of the main characters you're in the wrong place.

I will mention that Luffy is... a force of nature and after reading a bit, he's great at what he is, but he also will rub a lot of people the wrong way. He's a guy who falls ass backwards into treasure while not even meaning too. Also he's a pirate, but he's a "good guy" so no murder, no pillage, no looting, he's basically a bad pirate. "He defies the law" but even then... he doesn't really, he just fights corrupt law enforcers for the most part. If you want a "real pirate", this will definitely upset you. But I do think again this is perfectly acceptable, especially for the time it came out at, and the target audience.

At the same time, I do have one complaint and it's what keeps me from giving this a 10. The action. This has definitely improved over time, but I still feel like the action is very hard to follow at times, and at the beginning it was just the typical "Shout a move name, show it" and then that's it.

Now the action shows more of the background and areas. Battles are perhaps too large, and the combat is better. But it's still not "Epic level" And seeing stuff like Gantz (Which has too much action, or at least too in-depth) and Berserk, I start to realize why those mangas stand out, when this is more indicative of the typical action in manga. (Again it becomes better, but never truly epic).

The one other thing I'll say is I found Punk Hazard's arc to be a little messy. It made me worry that the writing/story was going to take a downward spiral, but it is probably the only arc I'll say was a step down in quality, and likely doesn't need to be mentioned in my review, but it is, so apparently it does.

Ultimately I'm onboard, I'm ready to ride this to the end and I'm ready to see what eventually happens to the entire Straw Hat Crew. While I've heard this will end in 2025? I don't believe it. Wrapping up everything in just two years seems impossible, and at the very least extremely rushed.

But at the same time, I also don't want it to end in 2025, this is a series that needs a satisfying ending, not an info dump, not a "That's the story". There needs to be multiple epilogues for all the characters if they're not all wrapped up, and I really hope it doesn't play out like some stupid "their stories don't matter any more because X happened".

I probably won't return to update this unless my score heavily changes, but at the same time, I'd recommend almost anyone to read a few chapters of One Piece. If you don't enjoy it, that's ok, your opinion is valid as is mine, (And don't be afraid to review it if it doesn't speak to you). But at the same time, if you do enjoy it, be prepared because you're not on the ride yet, you're only in the line waiting to get on the roller coaster, and even then we still don't know where it will end. But the one thing is you will almost certainly enjoy the trip.

PS. The only manga I can personally compare this too for its length is Hajime no Ippo. I prefer Hajime no Ippo more, it's a 10 in my book, HOWEVER, there are reasons I prefer Hajime no Ippo to One Piece, and there's are probably a thousands reasons I can suggest that One Piece is more popular or appeals to more people. And the fact is... They're both great mangas.

A Racist government that enslave and discriminate certain races. An extremely loyal pirate crew who hate enslavement, discrimination and wasting food. A captain who will fight against the whole world(literally) for his nakama.
A legendary treasure capable of turning the world upside down. A mysterious clan waiting for 800 years for a certain person. A story in which antagonist and protagonist have the same ideology- "People's dream never end". People who won't sell out their friends even if it means their country is destroyed.
Is 78 years too old ? One arm not enough to rule the seas? An outsider shouldn't save a country? ... Dream? Will?

One piece is one of the best anime/manga out there. Finest side characters(you'll love some of them more than protagonists), brilliant world building. Loyalty = Straw hats. Best side characters = One piece

One Piece is without a doubt something that is worthy to be called "King of Shounen," and for many great reasons. It is tough to miss since its popularity is mind blowing and growing at a rapid rate and it's everywhere. It has almost overtaken "Batman" comics, and it is not so far off anymore actually. Now, It has already set its sight on "Superman" comics, and I would say it has a perfect shot at the 1st spot too if it keeps selling like bread and butter as it has done for so many years already.

However, the popularity is justified, and it shows in ... the author, Oda's writing, and the executing of this superb piece of fiction. There is a lot more than what One Piece is set out to be. I will try to do my best to get that point across and much more, so you can also at the very least, get a glimpse of what I see in this manga, which I still to this day, consider my all-time favourite and not many have managed to reach the same level as this one.

Story

ne Piece starts with our main character, Monkey D. Luffy breaking out from a barrel in a certain pirate ship. He knows how to make an entrance if anything. His goal is to become one day the "pirate king" the person who has conquered all the seas, and the mysterious "Grand Line" as well. The path ahead of him will be harsh and not every day will be fun. He has set out from his village to find and build his crew, so he can set sail and start his grand adventure of taking the title of the "Pirate King." It is quite simple and straightforward and looking at it now, it does not seem to warrant all the popularity, and you probably don't have any idea how it got all that fame, in the first place.

As our crew begins to form and they start to set sail. The formula which will be most common for a while will be how the crew moves to an island, and then there will be a bad guy, they beat them up and move forward to the next island, and the same thing happens there. This is only the first phase before you get into a more complicated and complex situation, where the fun part begins. The first 100 or so chapters are what I would consider: an introduction to our character and world building to get you to know how the world works, what applies here, the government system, among other things.

Therefore, I would say huge do not even begin to describe this vast world of One Piece. Because, as you move forward, many exciting things will be revealed for the future, in the form of foreshadowing. You will get to know how scary the "Grand Line" really is, through someone talking about the many big shots over there. Alternatively, maybe if someone did see the strength differences of the different seas, it would make you excited for the future. This technique to get you interested in something Oda excels at and understand it enough, so he does not go too overboard. If you saw everything that the world has to offer, would there be any point in continuing One Piece? It would lose it's an effect, after all, if that were to be the case.

To, political drama, where the land is on the verge of falling, and you see the situation unfold dynamically, so you get to look at some remarkably new sides. A lot of world building which gets you very invested in the world and gave you a good understanding of all the components, like how the society works, all the different culture you will experience, you might even get some history lesson related to this world that might come up again at a later time.

Primarily, One Piece is a plot-driven series, the goal is already clear enough from the very beginning, but that only applies to our main character. One way to think of the latter is how every island you will get to visit in the duration of your journey is one big arc, where there are goals related to that island. For example, it could be something like overthrowing someone from the throne; a mad king who is entirely evil and does a thing in a benefit for himself and no one else. The thing is, this character will have their backstory, which might make you sympathy or hate them even more, depending on how it plays out. Moreover, another goal for any of the island could be something like, to retrieve someone back from an organization with their form of messed up justice. It is ridiculously hard to not go into spoiler territory; hopefully, this didn't give away too much.

This is just one of many scenarios and segments. One Piece takes use of, the author knows all too well how to write them out and end them. From my understanding, this is where even the aspect that is easy to hide between the actual main plot, gets a good and satisfactory ending. That's why, this one of the few manga that lacks some annoying plot holes, it has some, but there are not that many worthy enough to be called that. Furthermore, as already said, there are many different and fascinating cultures in the world. In a certain island somewhere far-far away, they use technology in the most unusual, and you might even call it a weird way. However, using the rules and logic Oda has established for any of the many islands, or even the world itself, he can give a not so intricate and fun description of how it works so you can easily understand the concept for yourself and get enchanted by their very own culture.

You even have your own "World Government" system which is not so simple and runs deeper than you might think. There might or not be people working and controlling them from the shadows, and who knows, there might be someone else who controls even them. One Piece has its society, land, and it is twisted and not easy to understand. There are people in this world who thinks they are fit to be called "gods” and think of themselves so highly that they don even breath the same air as the other humans. These nobles think they transcend normal human and the way they are cared for is incomparable and quite unfair to everyone else in the world.

To go even further, One Piece also goes into some very serious territory and does an impeccable job of portraying each of them. You will see everything from slavery, racism, the underworld and some very severe and dark secret which will make you feel all kinds of different emotions at once. To put it very simply, while One Piece is focused around teen and up, it goes into some seriously messed up stuff and should not be taken lightly. It's not merely for children; you will get hurt thinking that way. The later parts get quite dark, and you might start questioning if you are watching or reading the same thing.

Moving on, this world has a power, or rather the fruit which gives the user the ability to fight with many strange ways but eating something like that will make you lose a knowledge which is very crucial for a pirate and should not be dismissed lightly if you have the chance. The concept is simple enough, you eat the fruit and gain powers which can form you into an animal, maybe make you able to become invisible, or even soar high through the skies. Make bullets pass through you without you getting hurt, control the very nature itself, break the world apart and unbalance the entire ecosystem itself.

Also, you can get the ability to control one of the four elements themselves. However, there is even more to this mystic fruit called devil fruit — alternatively, something more unusual like controlling smoke. Moreover, you have another power which let the non-ability user bypass the defense mechanism some of these ability gives you. I won't go too deep in, because I could easily spoil some significant parts. What you need to know, is no one will be impossible to beat if you put these powers to use.

Even more, if you somehow combine this ability with your very own devil fruit. The combinations are endless. As long as you can imagine anything is possible in the world of One Piece. Nothing seems off, because we do get an explanation when we least expect it. Oda does an excellent job of covering all the potential plot holes.

Do not think One Piece ends at the main character goal, it's a lot more, and hopefully, this made that clear enough to get you somewhat a simple understanding what you can expect if you dive this excellent manga.

Art

The art is unique and quite different from the other you might have seen before. It's weird and epic all at once. Oda can take on many forms with his art and manipulate it; however, he sees fit. Each character is different; there is no similarity, it is like another author drew them. I have seen some absurd and hilarious, character design from this mangaka, but at the same time, I also got hold of some experience of some quite badass and amazing designs. You can tell, he loves drawing and writing, it shows so clearly in his work and every panel always feels superbly detailed and well managed. Oda has one of my favorite art styles, just like the author of Tower of God, Siu, it is unique and his very own.

Depending on the situation, Oda can accurately change the art style just enough to satisfy the vibe you should be feeling in the moment. His facial expression is always on-point and never manages to do not give me chills if the situation calls for it or makes me all sad or angry if necessary. It is one a kind style he is using, and he is utilizing it amazingly well and not cutting any corners while doing so. He deserves all the respect and attention because he shows it clearly, he justifies for it.

Characters

Characters are not different either; there are some very unusual and bizarre ones out there. Moreover, the same goes for the opposite of the spectrum. One Piece boasts an insanely large cast of characters; you don't have just the crew, there is a lot more. Even the one that seems unnecessary gets their time to shine and show off their value. All of the characters are also unique with their quirky personality.

As stated previously, the first 100 or so chapters are to give characterization and growth to our characters, or even development if need be. You will see the backstory of every member of the crew at some point in time, so it's not like you won't understand them fully. Oda will make sure you get the best of it, and not disappoint you when the time is precise. For me no backstory fell short, I always had emotions welling up in me as I was watching or reading it unfold. You can go from hating a character to loving him or her in a matter of moments, and of course, the same is true for the other way.

The side characters themselves are also fun and make the journey more entertaining; each new island will have you get introduced to the original cast who you will be following for the time being — learning about their flaws and good points and so forth. Even the less critical background character get some focus from time to time. Nothing goes unnoticed by Oda; he makes sure to notice everyone.

The antagonist is one of the best I've seen and very well written and executed. Of course, there will be some who is not so amusing or does not hit off well. I have gone from hating one of the worst enemies to enjoying them and their character and can't have enough of them. Also, no, this is not restricted by one or two foes, but a lot more than you can count. There are so many antagonists I want to see again; I want to experience development or even get them the critical role if it's a possibility for Oda. For the most part, their goal is understandable and don't feel wishy-washy, so it's easy to come to like them.

Although, I will not deny there are some cruel and messed up people I hate with a passion from by bottom of the heart and wish to nothing but death and misfortune upon them. This goes for both the good and the so-called wrong side. Overall, though, One Piece has a fantastic cast of characters which you can't help but love and find yourself getting attached.

The Negative

Like any other long-running series, if you dive into One Piece, you have to understand it's very slow paced and quite so; since it had made people drop it before it got to the excellent stuff. Not everyone will have time to sit down watch or even read over 800+ on-going chapters or, especially episodes. I would say if you don't feel any attachment by the third arc, you can drop it there, of course, to truly understand the popularity you will have to go on reading for a very long time. Which not everyone can do, and even if you did you might find yourself figuring out that this series is not for you.

Despite being a shounen, it's not the same as "Dragon Ball" franchise or even "Naruto" in some cases. If you are looking for amazing fights, then One Piece is not for you. It has a lot more than simple battle maniac guys going at it each other. It has a story which runs deep and can get quite complicated in the long run. Although, being a shounen and all, One Piece does have some great fights further down the road and a lot of them to boot. However, in the case of the shounen mentioned above, it's not quite like them, and the battle is not the main focus.

Adding on, the cast of character will get development and growth. That said, it will not be very apparent, and the process will be prolonged for the future to come. Oda has mentioned before he is afraid that people will begin to dislike these great characters he has built if he were to change them just ever so slightly. Some "fans" even complained when they saw abnormal behavior from some of them.

All said and done, nothing of these can be regarded as "negative" if you take time to think about it. They are only obstacles that depend on peoples and their expectations. My advice as with any media or literature would be to go in completely blind, anime or manga alike and make your judgment instead of relying on everyone else. Because despite my best effort to draw out the picture the fans see when One Piece in focus, not everyone will feel the same. I hope this manages to at least, grab some attention to possibly new fans.

Conclusion

It's apparent that I've been saying this a lot in recent times, but One Piece is easily something that should be given a chance at one point in your life. It has one of the best plot-driven stories I have seen. So along with large and amazingly well executed and written characters, including some great antagonist/villain.

This review is just a brief description of what you can get if you decide to dive in. The only want to truly understand something is to form your judgment and go from there. The world building is vast and is clear from the very start; it's one of the best in its class. Not many manga or anime has this kind of fantastic world that is ever expanding. The only other one that is on the same line or more is "Tower of God," beyond that; I have no idea of anything else that stands on the same wavelength as these two. If anything, Hunter x Hunter is close, in any case.

Whether you prefer the anime or manga, both are amazing and have their advantages and disadvantages. The anime adaptation is spot-on until the early 500s where it starts degrading in quality, and the pacing becomes painfully slow. However, before then it's a great adaptation and having seen and read both, you can't go wrong with either of them.

If you prefer to pace yourself and want solid cannon content, no filler, then read the manga and set your own pace; it's quite easy to catch up if you read it then you might think, even if the amount of chapter is a lot.
In the case of anime, you have much time on your hand, there is no hindrance in your life at the moment, and you generally prefer it because of the bonus anime brings, and you don't care about pacing or any other hindering components. Then watch it. That's all you need to decide which path you want to take.

I hope this manga review capture some attention to potential new fans. So I hope you have a great time with One Piece as I did. It's my all-time favorite, so I won't deny I have some bias toward it. My opinion is not a fact; it's simply my own opinion and my experience as I went on reading this excellent piece of fiction. To this day, it's still on-going, and things are heating up quite nicely in the recent arc of the manga, I am very excited about the future and can't wait for more. Let's dive into this together, in this modern-day masterpiece of a shounen and one superbly written and executed story.

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways

This series is where it all began for me. The "Romance Dawn" if you will. I remember starting the fifth grade back in 2007, I hit it off real quickly with this one boy in my class. We had loads of things in common and were constantly sharing new interests. One thing we didn't share was his love anime and manga. This wasn't because I didn't like it, rather I just hadn't experienced it yet. One day he shoved One Piece volumes 1-3 in my backpack and told that I would love it. And love it ... I did. I read through all 13 novels available at the time in a flash. I read and re-read them while I waited for the next to be released. In me grew a love for manga and anime of all sorts, it was like junk food (I feel like many of you would agree). Incidentally, One Piece was, and still is, my favorite manga of all-time.

But enough about me, on to the actual review! I promise that this will be a completely objective review. I think I will start with what is great about this manga, as it vastly outweighs it's flaws.

The most important part of any story is, well, the story! One piece tells a grand tale of adventuring pirates all searching for the ultimate treasure. In a story like this, the world is absolutely massive, and Eiichiro Oda handles it so well. Every new place our characters travel they are faced with trials and tribulations. Sometimes they win, sometimes they lose. You never know. Each story arc is unique in setting and character development. There are new problems to solve or maybe another pirate warlord to defeat. Either way it feels pretty fresh every time. And it is all very memorable, I can’t think of a single time I felt that a chapter was just filler-garbage.

At the core of the story is its wonderful characters. All of them have their quirks, but they are not defined by these, which unfortunately happens very often in manga. This makes them feel very real. For example, the main character, Monkey D. Luffy, at face value, seems to be just a lovable idiot. But underneath this is a shocking deep, passionate person who looks out for his friends at all costs. For Luffy there are no truly sad goodbyes, everyone has a purpose and a plan so as their friend, he lets them go. The characters are what I love the most I think, you can connect with them so closely on different levels and they never get boring.

But even with a good plot and characters, what is a story if it is not enjoyable? One Piece is a fun and ofttimes, absolutely insane story. It can leave you in stitches or it will make sob like a baby. It is a well-crafted roller coaster of emotions and plots. No matter how old you are, no matter what kind of manga you like, you WILL enjoy One Piece.

Now to the bad. There is not much about One Piece that is truly bad, but nothing is without flaws. I feel like my points are nitpicky things that don’t really hurt the story.

The artwork in One Piece is normally really great. It is generally clean and simple. But occasionally the fighting scenes can get very messy and it can be a bit difficult to tell what is going on. Also worth noting, there is a lot of visual humor and the mouths especially can get very crazy looking, I can see where this would put some people off. It put me off until I got used to it.

The story can sometimes feel a little repetitive. But I feel this is very understandable, last I heard, this story is meant to take up 100 novels (if you bought the whole series new it would cost you around $1300!) so this inevitable. Although, Oda does a really great job of spacing out the similar story lines, so this is not incredibly noticeable.

Overall, One Piece is a great story and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great series!



Also worth noting: the anime follows the manga series pretty perfectly, so if you are more a watcher than a reader, you will miss out on almost nothing.

Leader of the big three in Japan. Categorized as consistently getting better with every story arc that passes. Praised for its unique art style which is called both grotesque and absurdly appropriate.

Know this, its a fantastic manga. 80-90% of the people who don't read it are people who were influenced badly by the art or the horrible 4kids dub which destroyed its image or just had trouble getting past the slow beginning. But people who truly don't like the series aren't that common.

Don't judge this one quickly whatever you do. Read 100 or even 200 chapters ... before giving up on it. Most people start liking it after the Arlong park arc, and then completely fall in love with it after the Enies lobby arc.

Synopsis: The story is about Monkey D Luffy and his quest to become King of the Pirates by travelling the Grand Line and finding the legendary treasure known as One Piece.

Story: 9/10

Pre-grand line the story isn't really that much and was all just character development. Some very heartfelt and beautiful flashbacks to each of the crew members pasts. They had some horrible incident happen in their lives which made them outcasts, but Luffy recognizes there strength and gets them to join his crew.

When they enter the grand line its still mainly about developing new characters, but Oda starts to tie the world together a little bit. The existence of the forbidden pone-glyphs, the corrupt officials in the world government. All this starts to tie itself together in the grand line.

The story itself is also a real tear jerker. I get lumps in my throat all the time listening to them. Keeping in mind that I am an emotional robot so you will probably end up grabbing a Kleenex.

power-ups I would say are done somewhat poorly. At least the first wave of power-ups during the Enies lobby arc. I would say they are 5/5 for "cool power-ups" and 1/5 for well thought out power-ups. Oda just had them evolve out of nowhere without any foreshadowing. The next power-ups though were absolutely perfect. After the time skip, they had basically been foreshadowing the abilities and changes to the crew for the duration of the manga. Absolutely perfectly done.

Another thing I have been noticing about the story. Oda is actually building towards a sequel. He's left all these hints talking about things the pirate king did and they never go into much detail but Oda leaves it open to be elaborated on in a second one piece manga. Its rather epic and grand when I think about it. That he's already putting together a sequel about the original pirate king.

Art: 10/10
Original art style designed specifically to work with the pirate theme. This turns a lot of people off, but you can't possibly claim that Oda is actually bad at drawing. Looking closely at the pictures there is so much detail in every frame that you can't think that way. Oda is the Picasso of pirate manga.

wonderfully detailed backgrounds. Every frame has them. Lots of manga write off backgrounds and just focus on stunning characters, but one piece gives you both. The backgrounds are simply amazing.

Character Art is off the charts. Every character has his own style too him. All of them are completely original and unique. Even the filler characters look good. One tiny flaw is that usually the female characters are somewhat bland in that they are all knockout babes, but I don't think Oda had much of a choice there given the market, and to be honest he does sneak a lot of ugly females in the back door on occasion.

Character 10/10
Character development is pretty much covered in story and is fantastic. They introduce a character and give them a back-story and continue developing them throughout the series. For instance, Nami's would be weather or not she can overcome what the fishmen did to her village. They never drag the story of one character on either. It's rather elegant.

Enjoyment 9/10
The early story was rather poorly done in comparison with the ladder of the story and you can see the mangaka improves with every chapter. So its hard to get into and like I said before 80-90% of people who haven't read One Piece is because they gave up early on without giving it a chance to improve. IT GETS BETTER!!!!

The action is more of a brawl then a strategy game which is a matter of taste really. Its actually rather easy for Oda not to screw up given the way he's done it.

Comedy is definitely there. Every character has their own quirks which never get old. At first glance they might seem like catchphrases but they are actually much deeper than that. They each have their own funny personality and quirks which play into how they interact with each other.

There's really no good way to score One Piece because early on they would rank probably a 7/10 or an 8/10 depending on how much the show suited your tastes, but with the show getting better every season its basically jumped a point every year. By now if I was to judge it just by the last year, I would give it a 15/10... IT GOT FRIGGEN GOOD!!!!

One Piece is the most charming, heartwarming, heartbreaking, unique, well-thought out fiction I have ever read. It was life-changing for me to be honest. It manages to be hilarious while teaching amazing lessons, heartbreaking while still instilling feelings of hope, have a unique art style while still being visually stunning, etc.
It's often been said that the characters don't develop at all, and while I understand that claim, I don't agree. Characters like Robin manage to do a 180 throughout the course of the series while still retaining the core traits that made you like them in the first place.

Every moment of One Piece for me ... is pure joy.
The best way I could describe what makes it stand out from other long-running shonen is that to me, in series like Naruto, you believe Naruto will become Hokage because he is the main character.
In OP, you believe Luffy will become the pirate king because he is Luffy.
OP has the best world building out of any story I've ever read, a unique and well-written cast of characters with goals and morals as diverse as they are, and a story that still manages to be engaging after 20+ years.

As much as I may love this series, I am not blind enough to think everyone will enjoy it. If you are new to the series, I would recommend reading up to the end of the Arlong Park arc (about 8 volumes in). At that point, you can get a feel for the rest of the series will be like, and decide if you want to continue.

I'm still stunned that a manga that I only rediscovered about a year ago has managed to change my life so much. I can definitely say that OP has changed my life for the better.

Now the best selling manga of all time, One Piece is the tale of a man named Luffy who is gonna become king of the pirates. In face of this long-running manga, that summary does many injustices; in essence, One Piece is a story of the Strawhat Pirates setting out to follow their dreams. This overview is going to be a bit long, but hang tight with me and I'll give you as much of an comprehensive overview as I can on this monster of a series.

My criticisms of the manga are as follows: as the manga goes on, the skinnier women get less and ... less room to have organs while their breasts seem to increase in mass. It's not as if the author, Oda Eiichiro, is incapable of diversity, either. Oda has shown to take risks when drawing male characters, giving them a wider choice of physical design. There is also the problem with white-washing, which is much more obvious in the anime than the manga, but present nonetheless.

On the other hand of the spectrum, what One Piece does good, it does REALLY GOOD. There are many fine details of plot and characters that are continuously woven into the story; a little "throw-away" character to help start the manga series you don't think you'll ever see again? JUST KIDDING, they're back and they're doing stuff! Oda does not forget his characters, unlike some authors (looking at you, Kubo Tite). Speaking of characters, there are MANY, of many different moralities, aspirations, and identities. I've seen some people complain that there are too many characters in One Piece, but I feel that it is justified as: 1) the characters are traveling from island to island, and it makes sense to meet more people and 2) this large cast is HANDLED WELL. Unlike in other series such as Bleach or Dragon Ball where the notable characters are so large in number that sometimes their own authors forget their names, One Piece is able to establish characters well and balance the ones that will appear again and those that shall not.

One of the best parts of One Piece, however, is its sincerity. One of the reasons I can not bother myself with series like Fairy Tail is because many of its preachings ring hollow, almost out of obligation. Even as it embodies many shounen tropes, One Piece doesn't feel like it is shoving token lessons down my throat. Perhaps it's because the main characters are not totally "goody two-shoes"; they aren't going to save the world because "that's what you should do", they do things because "they want to". Sometimes that means beating up a whole town of bounty hunters and stealing their stuff, sometimes that means saving a group of children from a mad scientist--even if it is disadvantageous to them and they will get nothing out of it.

One Piece, with all it's flaws and perfections, is a lot of fun. Interwoven with a clear sense of adventure and mystery; lessons of strong friendship, love, and following your dreams; as well as very real discussions of politics and corruption, racism and other forms of discrimination, the nature of revenge, and even slavery! This is a big series with many aspects, and though long, it is worth every chapter.

If you like creative and fantastical worlds, elements of whimsy as well as an shounen spark of adventure, One Piece has much to offer you.

Let me tell you about my experience with One Piece. Seven years ago, a friend pressured me into reading it. How did he sell it to me? “The fights are amazing,” he said, and in his words, “It gets good with Doflamingo.” Ah, the innocence and ignorance of my friend. I read it, got as far as Dressrosa, somewhere around chapter 732, and then I dropped it.

The problem with One Piece and some of its fans is that they try to sell the manga as if it were like Dragon Ball, Naruto, Bleach, MHA, JJK, or KnY. The truth is, it’s not. This isn’t to ... undermine those series; I’ve read and enjoyed most of them at one point. But what makes One Piece fundamentally different is that it’s not about the fights, or even the story, which advances at a very slow pace. It’s about having adventures, something I think Oda captures perfectly in the preface to the first volume of One Piece:

“I’ve been gathering and reading a bunch of reference materials to do this ‘pirate story.’ However, the pirates I admired so much in my youth hardly ever left written records of their history. I guess they were just too busy having fun with their own adventures, and they forgot to leave their stories for future generations. That’s just the trouble with those darned pirates.” — Eiichiro Oda

One Piece is about friends exploring the world and having adventures at heart. Sure, the world-building is superb, and the characters grow on you a lot. But if you come into it just looking for a quick story or amazing fights, you’ll find it hard to enjoy. All the incredible aspects of One Piece won’t resonate if you’re not patient enough to savor each moment of the Straw Hat Pirates’ odyssey.

I genuinely believe that the grand majority of people WILL enjoy One Piece. If you are brave enough to begin the journey. and patient enough to enjoy your time with each moment

I'm late to the party but yes, there's a reason One Piece is one of the most beloved mangas ever published: it's amazing. While I'm only a quarter into the manga, I have read enough to know I have more greatness to enjoy.

The art is great and keeps on getting better as you go along and perfectly complements the wacky universe Oda created. You really have it all: a charismatic cast of larger-than-life villains and heroes, a gargantuan world that sketches itself out at a timely pace, ridiculously fun and creative fights, and epic arcs. There is true passion and love infused into this carefully ... crafted manga and you feel it. You laugh, you cry, you root, not only for the main cast but also for the inhabitants of this big world you meet on the way.

Of course, the manga is not without faults. Oda takes some easy shortcuts to solve seemingly hopeless situations and some arcs are underwhelming and won't leave a mark. But in the grand scheme of the manga, these faults are negligible. Additionally, it looks like the characters' dimension and growth have come to a stalling point. They remain fun and likeable enough for now, but given the length of the manga, I hope to see more for them to remain compelling.

All in all, I can't wait to read more.

The most overrated manga of all time.

First of all, I’m actually one that enjoys the series, however I can’t be denied that (unlike most of their fandom believes) the series is far from perfect. (although that also doesn’t mean that is terrible)

I’d try to be as impartial as I can, so I’ll start by mentioning some of the good and great stuff of the manga, and by that, we can’t review this without mentioning how awesome is the world building by Oda, truly is masterful, probably the best aspect of the series, since it’s adventure based, he does it in such a magnificent ... way that this series might have the best world building in all manga industry.

Another good aspect is that Oda has some good character treatment and this translates in good character development, in such a long story, he makes sures to give a good development not only for the main but sometimes even also for secondary characters.

The narrative structure of the series overall is where the problem start, if one were to look the bigger picture, the main story is really well made and everything is fully connected, the amount of details that the author establish in the story is something to be praised for, however, the pacing of the series is really terrible, I mean, it’s seriously bad, for example, with 700 manga chapters you still feel that the protagonist it’s too far to achieve his main goal and it even makes you feel that he’s not progressing as much, the way the story is presented can potentially become mentally draining for the reader, since some Arcs (like Alabasta, Skypea and Dressrosa) are unnecessary extended (even though I’m not sure if this is the author’s fault or the editor’s fault)

With what I just mention, it's also something negative that the nature of the majority of the Arcs are way too repetitive and tend to lose creativity by the author, for example, we know that the crew arrives at some random island or place, and that Luffy will fight the strongest antagonist, that Zoro will fight the second strongest enemy and that Sanji will fight the third strongest, and these tends to be a common thing within the manga, creating a never ending circle of the same thing.

Now regarding the battles and fighting abilities, lets just accept that almost all of the battles are mediocre and some of the ones who could have been great were “off screened” by the author (another negative aspect in which he sadly tends to usually rely), even though OP is more of an adventure-shonen than a battle-shonen, the battles are still and essential part of the story and the author disappoints in this department, since OP cannot compete to other shonen when it comes to the good overall building and details of battles, the fighting abilities are ok at best, nothing special, and the author does not employ to much brilliance during the course of the fights, there’s a evident lack of brilliance in strategy and tactics from the characters and their abilities when they are engage against each other.

Overall, it has some great moments but those are not enough to compensate the inconsistency of the series, which is highly overrated by their fandom, there a just so many things that could’ve been done better by the author (which reflects his lack of expertise in some areas), as a work this manga it’s far from the level of the top tier seinens, cannot even be put in the same room with the true masterpieces of the manga industry.

One Piece is a series that has much of what you want but also leaves a lot to be desired. There are many things the series does quite well, and there are many things it just does not do or fails to do at an adequate/consistent level. I’ll give two examples. One is one pieces world building and how grand and ambitious it is, alongside its narrative. This is does well but it also is a double-edged sword because my next example is…Character Writing in One Piece I believe is awful. Especially considering how long it is. There are too many characters, too many places, ... too many events, ideas, and conflicts that there just isn’t enough to also be able to have good, consistent and compelling characters. Now many would disagree…a that’s fine. If you have low standards then I envy you genuinely I wish I still had them but unfortunately, I don’t.

The next aspect I’ll talk about is that I believe One Piece is a great series to start someone out on early. I think if you wait too long and allow the viewer/reader to build their “taste” or “values” that it could end up hurting their experience. Of course, this just isn’t the case for everybody so do as you will. Regardless at some point in time give it a try but when you do make sure you understand that what you get in first 100 chapters or episodes is what you will get for the rest of the series. Some aspects will get much worse, while some get much better and much more interesting.

Do I believe the story deserves its hype? Sure, I think it’s good and at times can be quite enjoyable. I think it’s ambitious and I respect that. It’s trying to do much more than many other works do, and I understand that that means some aspects will end up being lack luster relative to other works that literally focus on those aspects. I however do not think this work is Top 10 worthy for me personally but still great and can totally understand it being Top 10 for others.

One Piece is not like any manga out there. If you can get past its length, and find the characters likeable, it's dang near perfect. One Piece is one of the only mangas that have had me pulling all-nighters just because an arc is THAT good. One Piece seems like a goofy pirate adventure, but it turns into this emotional master piece 400 or 500 chapters in. From the start, you're immediately teased with what is to come. Just from the East Blue, you can tell that the Straw Hats will definitely be on a grander journey than the one in the first 100 chapters. ... One Piece is a magnificent work of art, so once you get past its length, you're in for one heck of an adventure.

It's a pretty good manga. It's just not for me. And that's fine, if some people enjoy it, they enjoy it.

However, I will say my piece. The beginning starts off great, with the East Blue saga being a pretty good introduction to One Piece. We saw our first group of characters, Nami got her arc, and it was well done. The entire series is done fairly well. So why don't I like it. It is just far too long, with little to no stakes. I get that the journey is the point, you're supposed to derive enjoyment from just watching the gang have fun ... and wander around, but it's just far too dragged out.

The side characters constantly get sidelined and the main 3 guys always take the spotlight in every single fucking arc. I just don't like it anymore. I am also of the opinion that the writing went downhill post timeskip.

But that's just what i think. If you want a story that's decent at some points, a story that's just an adventure with almost nothing else to it (in my opinion), read the story. If you want literally anything else, don't read this manga. Lastly, this manga should definitely not be number 4.

So, here we are. After such a long time I finally got around to diving into the oceans of One Piece and a few years later, I have almost caught up with this insane manga. And finally, I feel qualified to share my thoughts. So is One Piece really one of the best manga series of all time? Yes! Should you read it, even today? Absolutely! And no, you don't need to get to chapter (whatever) for it to "get good", I was pretty much hooked by chapter 10 or so.

I'd like to preface this by saying, its kind of surprising that a series as ... bizarre and outlandish as this has become the biggest of the big shounen series, let alone the best selling comic book series of all time. Its a series where the wacky art style and sheer length of it can push a lot of people away, and it seems like its a lot more uninviting compared to Naruto or Bleach. But I can confidently say that among all of those, One Piece is the most high quality work and its definitely worth getting into. Trust me, at first you will think that the length is insurmountable but once you get hooked, you will be grateful that it's so long and want even more of it.

So why is it so good? My main reason is, I believe, that One Piece is a masterclass in worldbuilding. Its universe is so varied, diverse and deep. Every island the crew visit has its own people, culture, architecture, cuisine, social structure, local problems and more. On a large scale, all the characters interact with each other in a large web of complex and dynamic relationships, there's the unique political structure of the world government, the unique geography and so on. All of this helps the world feel truly lived in and real in a way that very few works of fiction can. The world itself starts to feel like a main character at times.

Not only that, but One Piece is probably the strongest example of long-term storytelling ever made. Characters and stories are woven into each other seamlessly, where even the tiniest local events end up having ramifications for the bigger picture. Few works of fiction dare to be this ambitious and go on for so long and of the ones that do, very very few of them actually manage to maintain a high standard of quality all throughout. Most of them just keep going to milk the franchise for profit, but not here! Oda well and truly has more stories to tell and more to say, he is still going because he wants to, not because he has to. I couldn't think of a more consistent and committed author.

And beyond all that, One Piece is at its core a fun action adventure tale about pirates, about Luffy and his crew. This focus is never lost and that campy and charming aspect is retained to this day. As an action series, the fights are important - they are quite frequent and Oda really knows how to draw a good fight! There is a good mix of drama, humour, politics, relationships and more, Oda also really knows how to tug on your heart strings and will do so a lot! In terms of visuals, while the artstyle is an acquired taste, some character designs and abilties are so outlandishly bizarre, they make JoJo look normal. Despite this, its still very well made and very fun to read. Fights, characters, locations and setpieces are all oozing with personality. The way Oda structures his pages keeps the flow of both dialogue and action flowing and makes the act of just reading a page thoroughly enjoyable. I think the stigma about the artstyle stems mainly from the anime and its exceptionally cheap and poor quality animation. In my opinion, the anime just doesn't do the manga justice with its crappy visuals and poor pacing. The manga is just leaps and bounds ahead of it.

So to summarize, do you like pirates? Do you like action? Do you like adventure? Do you like exploring a deep and fascinating fantasy world? If you answered yes to any of these, then you will not regret delving into One Piece. Even if you didn't say yes to any of those, I still think you should give it a try. It's one of the most fascinating works of fiction to ever exist and deservers to be experienced.

The world is full of mysteries and miracles! As corny as it sounds, that's what we tried to show in his work Oda-sama. Will he? Of course! This story shows us not only the life of the dreamer, striving to find something legendary, but also that the dreamer is willing to take a chance for many of his friends, even the dream. It becomes stronger, seeking recognition of his love for his hope, and he sees it. But the world is not so simple, it teaches one, sometimes painful, sometimes happy, that all the difficulties of life and its sweet moments experiencing Monkey D. Luffy ... and his nakama. And whatever pain life is not the reason Luffy is always fun, cheerful, thus once again proving that desperate situations when next to you is not true friends. However, if it were that easy! In order to become a stronger person, sooner or later you have to know the bitterness of defeat. And life once again proves how strong you are, the world is full of people is stronger than you. Luffy learn, and then begin the adventure! And now come more dangers, more pain, more enemies, but also more adventurous, more friends, more than the joy of victory, but not excluded, and hot lesions. «One Piece» — is a masterpiece, a masterpiece in which the characters do not just go from one place to another, as if scripted, stone-faced sweeping enemies, and live your whole life in front of us, and it's the most important thing.

I first started reading One Piece about 5 years ago and no matter how hard I tried I just couldn't get into the series. I will admit I fell for the classic problem at the beginning of a series with "the artwork." It drove me insane. So I dropped the series and came back to it about 2 years ago and boy am I happy I did. Once I managed to push through those first few chapters, this series dragged into depths of fandom I'd never experienced before.



Story: 10

This comedic adventure is set in a place where pirates roamed the earth. Our protagonist Luffy sets ... off on a journey to become the king of the pirates. Along the way he meets many people, including his motley crew, all with their own dreams; as well as countless villains with or without devil fruits (which give people special powers, but takes away their ability to swim.)

While the basis of One Piece is quite simple, the story arcs bring real-world problems into it. From discrimination and racism, to corruption and slavery - the world of One Piece has seen it all. These themes bring about a depth to this fantasy.

With these story arcs, even though they are separate tales, they all interconnect with one another throughout the series. Minor foreshadowing in one arc can lead to major plot developments later on. An attractive thing about One Piece is that there's no limit to what can happen.

As I said earlier, the artwork at the beginning of One Piece was hard to digest as Oda was still a "rookie." However as the story progressed the art got better - MUCH better. The fighting scenes are well done and it's fairly easy to tell what's happening during them (which is always a plus xD). What I really enjoy about the artwork is that it doesn't overuse screentones like many manga tend to do. And while this ties into the "character" section as well, I love the creativity of the character designs especially for the villains.



Characters: 9

I find that the real gem in One Piece is not always the storyline, but the characters met along the way. First we have the crew, all unique in their own respects: (I'm going to try and keep it short...no promises though)

- Luffy, the captain may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but he has a strong sense of determination and friendship. And if he scouts you for his crew, it's best to just give in. He'll win in the end anyway.

- Zoro, the directionally challenged swordsman is hardheaded and can probably sleep anywhere, but is loyal to Luffy. His constant snipping with Sanji is hilarious, but his sword skills are badass.

- Nami, the navigator used to be a weak link always needing saving, but this violent, sassy girl can now hold her own with the rest of the crew.

- Usopp, the lying sniper who wants to be a great man of the sea, is comedic and gets very attached to everyone. While at first he was afraid of everything, he now knows how to take care of his own fights.

- Sanji, the ship's cook is a complete ladies man. When fighting "Black Leg Sanji" only uses his legs and this guy knows how to branch off from the rest of the crew to get some major stuff done.

- Chopper, the Strawhat's doctor and human/reindeer zoan fruit user is sweet and earnest. He wants to be able to cure any disease.

- Robin, the Archaeologist. While having a difficult past, she finally found where she belongs on the crew. This level-headed girl is the logical one in a mass of hot-heads and her curiosity often gets the better of her.

- Franky, the cyborg shipwright wants to sail 1000 seas in a ship he built. His somewhat perverted nature is hilarious at times. He runs on cola and believes he is "SUUUPER" - both of which Usopp and Chopper seem to agree with. xD

- Brook - the skeletal musician who lost his shadow. This complete perv, who is always asking to see the girls' panties is not only skilled with music, but also with a sword. He brings a fun atmosphere to the crew.

Lastly we have villains. What makes One Piece really special to me is the massive amount of MEMORABLE villains. From Crocodile and Baroque Works TO Spandam and CP9 TO Doflamingo and the Doquixote Family (although that last grouping isn't my favourite.) Oda knows how to create a great villain. Although I have to say that at times they can look a little disturbing. *cough* Senor Pink *cough*

Overall, the characters are really well done. Many of the characters have quite a bit of depth, especially as we dive into their backstories.



Enjoyment: 10

I always enjoy reading One Piece and I anxiously await the release of each chapter, groaning when the series goes on break for a week and grinning when a massive plot twist or an exciting reveal happens. If that doesn't constitute enjoyment, then I don't know what does. xD

While every series has its faults (and One Piece is no exception), One Piece is enjoyable to read with good characters, themes, and plots. It well deserves a high rank for any adventure-lover.

This may be the one of the best shonen battle manga ever read, the story about a pirate that is trying to fine the One piece to become the pirate king. The main character traveling around the world meeting new friends and making the coolest crew mates of the sea. Every adventures is a unique story were the main character and his friends fight with many enemies that including the navy and the marines. I give this manga 10 because it took me a lot of time to appreciate this work of art, the first time i saw One piece i thought it was a ... kiddy show but one of my best friend highly recommend to give it a chance because it has some epics moments and thanks to that i found a great manga.The casual viewer may find this series to long but if you find the time to marathon a series i highly recommend this one.

To simply state, every theme that is desired from a Shounen Manga is included in One Piece. I would say the overall perspective of One Piece can be mirrored to that of The Lion King. It's impossible to dislike the Lion King, because it addressed so many themes that relate to ourselves and society. The same goes for One Piece. One Piece addresses the importance of Friends, Family, Trust, Goal Orientation, Belief, Happiness, Sadness, and all the common themes that make us go through the day and want to read page from page. Each journey and island that is included in the making of the ... One Piece story tackles a different theme, and with it different obstacles and challenges. Just like The Lion King is a story which we always remember of a lion who lost his father in return to fight for his throne, I will always remember One Piece as the journey a pirate named Luffy ventured to be the King of Pirates and find the hidden treasure, One Piece.
