Synopsis

Gabimaru the Hollow, a ninja of Iwagakure Village known for being cold and emotionless, was set up by his fellow ninja and is now on death row. Tired of killing and betrayal, he wants to die. However, no method of execution works on him because as much as the seemingly apathetic Gabimaru refuses to admit it, he does have a reason to live. He wants to return to his wife, who was the reason why he softened up and failed to be an effective assassin. Thus, he refuses to die.

Asaemon the Decapitator, a famous executioner, sees this and has a proposal for the ninja. She wants Gabimaru to join an expedition to an island south of Japan in search of the elixir of life in exchange for a full pardon by the Shogunate. However, this island is not a normal island: it is believed to be Paradise.

However the island is full of mysteries, and the exploring team—consisting of those marked for death—might not be fully prepared to handle them.

In terms of story this manga actively tries to subvert common shonen tropes actively leaving readers on edge. When characters start dying you think it starts to go down the death game trope and everyone is going to mindlessly be killed off, but it doesn't. Almost every death has a meaning. On the other hand you think characters will start to defy logic and somehow still be alive suffering mortal wounds, but they don't. At some point you're afraid of it falling prey to power scaling, but the author puts systems in place to prevent that showing how logical and calculated the characters have to ...

Mixed Feelings
Jigokuraku is a fine shounen battle manga. I hoped that it would be great, and it is - for a long stretches of time. But I certainly have some problems with it.

Act I is sometimes needlessly brutal, almost comically gory and overtly cynical. But gradually manga sheds its edginess, and its characters turn from over-the-top caricatures into more or less relatable and certainly lovable humans. The premise is wonderfully ridiculous, the mysteries are captivating and exiting, the horrors of the deadly island are disgusting, thrilling and alluring.

Of course, there is an impressive rogues gallery. Villains are completely amoral and hopelessly evil. It is ...

Hell's paradise review:

It's a cliché power fantasy that feels like it should be the final arc of any other manga.

Setting:

The manga is set almost entirely on an island called Paradise. (Spoiler-ish about the design of the island) The island is full of religious body horror monsters with some being quite creative. But the island itself is quite boring besides that which lives on it. The only standout areas in this entire claustrophobic area the manga takes place in is the Palace. The palace has some memorable scenery and is just as wild as the monsters that Guard it. However the fast paced nature of ...
