Synopsis

Second-year high school student Yatora Yaguchi is bored with his normal life. He studies well and plays around with his friends, but in truth, he does not enjoy either of those activities. Bound by norms, he secretly envies those who do things differently.

That is until he discovers the joy of drawing. When he sees a painting made by a member of the Art Club, Yatora becomes fascinated with the colors used in it. Later, in an art exercise, he tries to convey his language without words but instead through painting. After that experience, Yatora finds himself so invested in art that he decides that it is what he wants to do for a living. But there stand multiple obstacles in his way: his parents who are hesitant over his unique choices, his more experienced peers, and the study of a subject much deeper than he initially expected.

The interesting part of this manga is definetely the character relationships and development. Fortunately Blue period is more about these topics than art itself.

Pros: The author isn't repetitive and always has unique dilemmas/arcs, Said dilemmas are very thought provoking, Characters backstories are never boring and characters themselves are interesting, Has hype moments, and the main character is pretty awesome

Cons: The artstyle is kind of strange at first (gets better), Sometimes goes on for a little too long about art specifics/history (tbh just skip these)

I think this is one of those mangas where if you read chapter 1 you either get hooked or dont like ...

By far my favourite manga of all time.
In my opinion its biggest strength is how Tsubasa Yamaguchi manages to convey emotion in its purest, most raw form. There are countable gut-wrenching scenes and you end up rooting for all characters that you come across as they are all fleshed out beautifully and just really made to feel like real people.
I also feel that you don't even need to be that interested or proficient in art to enjoy.
I would recommend anyone to read this manga as I personally feel it has trancended what I previously thought possible of manga as a medium.
Literal masterpiece

So I heard that this is becoming an anime adaptation soon and I really thought it had promise at first because we get to see a delinquent student exploring himself with art. However reading it was a struggle at the same time as the pages were really long, it doesn’t focus on the others apart from the MC and I feel they just add the Yuka character for the sake of the usual old fashioned trope (boy wears dresses) rather than deep dive on their struggles being different. As well, I know I’m not into art but they could have at least explain the facts ...
