becoming the head of the student council or a member makes you a prestigious student and will help you settle in the future at the university and subsequently at work.

so, аlya chose a rational priority for herself

If there are heights it's natural to climb, right?

I didn't watch English sub but if I translate what Alya told Masachika in the first episodes that's pretty much what she says after he gives her an ice cream

Is she actually saying that or just your assumption?

To prove her worth and stuff. Generic stuff, but it works.

she said so in the first episodes in the cafe, when they were eating ice cream.

however, the real reason may be that alya lacks self-confidence and perhaps subconsciously she wants to assert herself so that people around her would love her for who she is and perhaps take her as an example, as a diligent student and girl !

Episode 2

17:10 M : By the way, Alya. Why do you want to be student council president ?
17:13 A : I want because I want. If there are heights I go for the heights. Do I need a reason for this ?

That's Alya's reasoning

(I'm translating from JPN this might not be exactly what is written in the English subs)

Actually Alya is kinda full of herself (that's what makes her socially awkward) so she doesn't really lack confidence. She is more afraid of failure and not having her worth acknowledeged

In my opinion.

So long as there's a way, a path for her to improve upon in any shape or form, she'll go for it. She strives to be the best possible version she can be of herself. And for that cause, she is willing to endure and undergo any hardship. That is what her character is based upon.

She already mentioned this in Episode 2, so you did miss it.

Ahh it's actually mentioned but she's not showing the actual reason to the viewer. No wonder I remember nothing about this plot point.

That's actually the reason.

We have nothing else as of the prologue of volume 9 about Alya's motivation. She really goes for the heights when there are heights she is going to do that again and again for the whole story with no other particular reason than going for the heights.

EDIT: Alya is comparable to most shounen jump heroes. In fact she is the only one actually challenged by someone for 9 volumes straight except once when Masachika will play a bit of piano. Masachika is a (strong and smart) supporting / supportive character for Alya leaning towards the mentor role in the elections plot line.

@DragyG Yep. The actual translation is,

Masachika: “Why do you want to become the student council president?”

Alya: “I do, because I want to.”

Masachika: gasps

Alya: “If there's room for me to reach new heights, do I need a reason to go for it?”

At that moment, both myself and Masachika felt immense admiration for her.

Personally, it's my favorite thing about her. Her willingness and determination to pull through anything that may obstruct her pursuit to achieving her goals - it is something us Gen Z can take profound inspiration from.

Idk if I should call her a great character for aiming high or the writer being dumb for making such a reasonless character geez

I wouldn't tell everyone they should do just like Alya but there are sure good things to take from her. A really good story for teenagers

Characters that are easy to understand are relatable. Masachika is a way more complex character and I doubt many readers / watchers will relate to him despite him being a really good character.

At least personally I relate way much more to Alya (having run for student council and having been second of the prez helps maybe a bit) and I'm quite glad we got a female MC like her doing the best instead of taking pride in doing things halfway while relying on her boyfriend for everything and then punch him in the face. (Don't get me wrong Alya does get a lot of help from Masachika but she is not doing nothing waiting for him to come. This will be showed in episodes 10 or 11)

I mostly relate to Alya.

I can understand Masachika and his motives but I can't relate to his feelings towards his family.

Yes

In reality I built the student council and the prez was a muppet we put because there were major conflicts between the classes that supported me and the others so we needed a neutral person to actually start working as a council.

@DragyG put*.

That's amazing. So you were pulling strings from the shadows. Sounds like Masachika.

Not exactly from the shadows. Let's say both side were quite influential on the prez.

I remember it being that she wants the power over the student body so she can make things happen her way. She believes strongly that she knows what is best for others, and wishes to make changes through the power vested in the president.

She mentioned earlier how she was frustrated that no one ever listened to her ideas or implemented them in the past, which frustrated her, then inspired her to strive for the president seat.
