I want to cry. I want to feel something in my heart. I want to curl up on the couch and sob as the credits roll. I want my nose to be so stuffy i have to breathe through my mouth. Whats an anime that can do this the same way banana fish did

I think it's pretty subjective, but I would recommend Violet Evergarden if you haven't watched it yet.

Well, you could watch Angel Beats! or Clannad "especially the sequel Clannad: After Story", they're great shows indeed.

Some great recommendations already (especially Link Click, Violet Evergarden, Orange, Clannad and Anohana). I annoyingly don’t get teary very often with media, but some others that got me were:

Steins;Gate
Fruits Basket
Anthem of the Heart
I Want to Eat Your Pancreas
Summer Ghost
Maquia
Sonny Boy
Natsume Yuujinchou

I wouldn’t call it sad, but if your searching for something similar to banana fish I can recommend you the manga Yasha. It was written by the same author as Banana fish and the story are relatively similar.

i could suggest Link Click and Steins;Gate, lots of emotion (but they've already been said).
a rather underrated anime that few people talk about but which is nevertheless great, that would be Rainbow (2010)! themes in common with Banana Fish. guaranteed emotions 😭

Theme-wise Rainbow is probs the most similar, but it's a lil more graphic than Banana Fish

Some other anime that are very emotional
- Orange
- Hunter x Hunter (1999)
- Black Clover

I’d recommend Link Click and Assassination classroom. Link click’ sadness is a bit subjective I feel but there’s this one ep that cuts deep no matter what and AC’s ending was so freaking heartbreaking

Plastic memories and 86 even if the second one don't have a sad ending but in the meantime it had emotional moments

I’m surprised no one said Zankyou no terror yet. It’s very similiar- also about two young boys who have been through some serious shit in their lives, also action packed but with great focus on characters and their struggles, and also very emotional and heart-wrenching. A really good short anime with beautiful soundtrack and cinematography, highly recommend.

all of the suggestions like Clannad or Violet Ever garden can make you cry, but nothing compares to what banana fish does. for me it's not only a sad anime but a mixture of many feelings that I haven't experienced in any other series

I havent really seen any that are similar to bananafish(still looking for something so this thread helps hehe) , but i can recommend some heartbreaking ones. However be aware they are all sad for different reasons and such im not sure if others resonate with them as much as i do.

My first recommendation would be Children of the whales. It is far from perfect but i have rarely been as sad as when i was watching that.

Rainbow i saw recommended earlier and i agree. Quite different but at times i just wanted to bawl.

Erased got me tearing up aswell.

From the new world is my personal favourite anime and it also has some really heavy moments.

If you want relationships that will fuck you up, you can't go wrong with Ai Yazawa. Nana and Paradise Kiss would be my reccomendations, they're not action focused like Banana fish but they both explore interpersonal relationships well and aren't afraid to hit you with life. Parakiss has better pacing but is less tragic, if you ask me, but Nana could straight up be horror because of how close to home it hits sometimes.
