Every time I read a new chapter of opm it says it’s around 180 chapters (182 chapters released when this is published) but whenever I see the discussions on mal it says 220 plus chapters so I’m really confused abt that?

Murata often splits his chapters into multiple parts.
There is actually 180 Chapters , but 227 Parts.

You can refer to the Official publication. (Apparently , MAL will set the chapter count as the Parts count : https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1283103)

Have you ever seen those mangas that have "chapter 100.5" or "chapter 99.1", basically any chapter with decimals? One Punch Man has that - somewhat - and in the end the manga has 3 types of counting:

  • Tonari: counting every single new issue as a new chapter, so OPM has 240 chapters;
  • Online: counting as chapters are numbered on the cover - they fucked up on the 150's -, so OPM has 195 chapters and;
  • Volume: the only correct one, which set chapters by the volumes.

This last one not only combine "decimal chapters" (not-numbered), but also do it for numbered chapters as well, for instance volume 28 has chapters 138th to 143rd, however chapter 138th in the Volume is actually 177+178 Tonari and/or 134 Online.

Hence the counting of OPM is a mess.

This thread never made sense for me.
It contradict itself , shows that even mods disagree among themselves , and is completely different from how the rest of the database is treated.

Please stop making threads of One Punch-Man when they haven't been released yet. [...] which means the chapter numbers will be different (lower than the chapter numbers on the official website) [...] The correct chapter number would be 185 (not 142).

If you look more attentively , the post has been edited by another mods years after its creation , and One Punch Man is the only Manga of the database that count the split of the chapters for the Web release as a full individual chapter... For all the other Mangas , MAL just follow the Volume release.

@Alexioos95 That's after the manga has ended publication. They can't do anything while its releasing. For example Tomo chan had like some 900 chapters but when it was marked completed it used the volume chapter count as per rule.

Actually , the post indicate that the count used once the Manga finish will be the one of Tonarinoyj... (More or less , as the post contradict itself , anyway.)

That's a different case.

MAL lists only official and professional works , and the 900 Chapters version is the Twitter Webcomics , which is not recognized as one.
The entry on MAL represent only the Volumes , which re-compiled the individual pages into real chapters and were published by Kodansha.
The discussion threads are a mess because people prefer to follow the free Webcomics rather than the (identical) purchasable Volumes.

This rule was changed tho , to add more Manhwas in the database.
So some of the Webcomics published on sites that have a certain popularity are now considered professional ones. (Twitter still doesn't)

@Alexioos95 Yes that's exactly what I meant when I said it. That there were chapter discussion for those 900+ chapters but the MAL entry only list chapter count from the published volumes. So what I'm getting at is the same will be done for OPM when its marked completed.
