letsgomeisei said: Hello, I just have a couple of quick questions! For #61 (Read a manga tagged with your least favorite genre(s)) are we restricted to only the tags under genres or would this include themes as well? And if we are picking up a series we already started (with 5+ volumes remaining, of course) do we put the start date as when we began reading it or the date that we read our first chapter in this year? And should we include a note of what chapter/volume we are starting from in this year? Themes also count. This year is fine, and it'd be ideal. Raddie said: Hai everyone! So just a small question, I've been struggling with a part on KuraikoDesu's bingo card: (3) Read a doujinshi based on a series you've read. I know someone mentioned earlier you can just advance search a doujin but there's a lot of doujins simply not there. One of the ones I wanted to use was that one infamous Kakyoin egg laying doujin "CLAMP LABORATORY 6". I can link to a wiki page proving its existence but not a manga database. So would that count? Thank you~ I think some of us are aware of that one. A wiki also works. |

It says, "You must read at least the last 5 volumes", but what if the manga I choose is a one shot or doesn't go up to 5 volumes. Actually, I'm not even sure what this rule means. Well, it's obvious, I have to at least read the last 5 volumes of the series I choose. But again, my question still stands; What happens if the manga is short? And if it's still publishing, I have to read the whole series, right? What if it's for a manhua, usually they go by chapter, not volume (if you're re reading it online), so I won't know if it's 5 volumes. Then what? |

That 'last 5 vols' rule only needs to be followed if you started reading it last year or before. The general rule is: just read to the last available chapter. |

(96) Read a manga recommended to you by another participant in the discussion thread. Could I get a recommendation for this one? As long as it's complete and not a battle shounen or sports, it will be perfect. Here's my manga list and my plan to read if there's anything complete in there. Thank you. |

So just to confirm (since this is my first time doing this): Do completed entries have to be manga that you started after you signed up, or does anything that you started to read within since the challenge started count? What about manga that we began to read before the challenge, but haven't completed (like series that are still being published)? When the rules refer to the "most recent" chapters, is that a) the most recent ones published in Japan, b) the most recent ones available on aggregator sites, c) the most recent ones available in official English publications, or d) does it depend on the series in question? Additionally, what exactly does it mean to complete a manga for the entries? If a manga is still being published, and we catch up, say, by January 31, do we have to continue to stick with it for however long it continues to be published throughout the year? |

Good questions. :) From the FAQ: "If I started reading something before 2022, can I use it for this challenge?" Yes. Previously started manga is allowed as long as you have at least five volumes left to read and complete it in 2022. If it is still publishing, you must finish it up to the most recently published chapter. "May I use manga that I read/started reading before signing-up?" If you read something before officially starting the challenge but still in 2022, just put your starting date as the day you started reading. If you started reading the manga before 2022, put your starting date as the day you started reading it again in 2022. "May I use webtoons and/or ongoing manga?" Sure, just remember that if they are ongoing, you must be up-to-date with the latest chapter (either raws, scanlation or printed version) when you turn in. Anything this year counts, and anything from previous years counts as long as you have 5 or more volumes left to read. The most recent one in whatever medium you're reading. Online, usually latest chapter out in Japan, or latest chapter available online. Physical volumes, latest volume available in whatever language your using, but please leave a note. Etc. For however long it continues to be published while you're still doing the challenge. Say you finish every completed series in your challenge and want to turn it in, you need to catch up with your ongoing as well before doing so. |

So, say I'm reading the physical translated release of a series that's still being released (like the Persona 5 translation, or Komi Can't Communicate). As long as I've caught up with the physical release in the language I'm reading it in by the time I'm turning in my sheet with all the completed series I've got, it counts, right? There'd be no need for me to, like, catch up with scanlations that might be ahead? Also, are series that ended with fewer than 5 volumes in total completely excluded from consideration (other than, say, one-shots or doujinshi), or is it enough to simply read a manga through to completion? Would the answer to that question be different if there's an unknown number of total volumes planning to be released -- like, for example, if a manga with currently only 1 volume but an unfinished story doesn't publish another volume within the year, would it be enough to simply read all that's currently available, or would it be disqualified by default? |

Correct. If you're reading everything this year, any length series is ok, as long as you read it all. If you're continuing it from a previous year, it has to have 5 or more volumes left for it to count. Besides having to be caught up to the latest chapter available for ongoing manga, the same rules apply. |

Sorry to leave another question, but as for a "collection of short stories", what would that entail? Would it be something like Ryuunosuke Akutagawa's "Cogwheels and Other Stories", or am I misunderstanding the prompt? EDIT: Also, would you consider Persona Q to qualify under challenge #68 and/or #69, since it contains demons, monsters, and deities from folklore and mythology -- or is it more designed to be for series with plots which center around mythology? I guess I'm just not quite sure what would qualify as "featuring" mythology, so I want to be very careful. |

I'd say yes, basically any manga that is not just one story, but a few stories told throughout, interconnected or not, usually of the same theme. Anthologies are probably the easiest. https://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?category=Collection+of+Stories&orderby=rating I would say that counts, it does say featuring instead of about. Basically that it shows up in the story, to whatever degree, but preferably a theme and not just a one-time thing. So I'm just wondering how I'm supposed to go about editing the challenge card. You don't have to edit it, but you can if you want. If you're using the small version in the sign up code and it's still bigger when you edit it, you could try making it smaller beforehand. I'm not familiar enough with imgur, but I don't think it resizes your images when you upload them. 🤔 |

I'm also in need of recommendations for 96. I'm not a big fan of horror, so I ask that you steer away from that direction, but thrillers/psychological stuff can be an exception on occasion. Additionally, mahou shoujo is not particularly engaging to me, particularly if it follows the typical formula and doesn't subvert the conventions of the genre. Speaking more generally, I'd also prefer something that is completed and under 30 chapters -- however, I'm willing to take on an ongoing series with less than 20 volumes, as well. You can take a peek at my completed/reading/plan to read list if you'd like more examples of what I like, but seeing as it may help to know some manga series I am already quite fond of, I will list them below:
As you can see, I'm open to most genres. I just want to see some of the best stuff you've come across. I'll even take an isekai recommendation if you believe it utilizes the potential of the genre well. Thank y'all in advance for your help in this matter! |

I thought the Rank itself has to say N/A (like stuff tagged with hentai are 'Ranked N/A')Gythia said: Hey, I need some help with #26 (Read a manga that is not ranked), #106 (Read a manga with a vehicle on the cover), and #126 (Read a manga based on a one-shot that got serialized), something completed, fully translated, and under 20 volumes would be great thank you 26: Shadows of Spawn, Harakiri Gomen, Planetary* 106: https://myanimelist.net/manga/724/Sand_Land (You've read Kamisama ga Uso wo Tsuku so I can't say that one anymore) There's also Homunculus and https://myanimelist.net/manga/4/Yokohama_Kaidashi_Kikou 126: I don't know any that are completed, someone else can help you with that Some of my friends have been recommending Homunculus to me for some few years now so I think I'll finally read that lmao, thank you! Edit: Oh, I just realized there's no rule against using R18 stuff so I guess they really mean manga with 'Ranked N/A'. Doujinshi seems to also be Ranked N/A so I think I'll use this one instead, thanks regardless tho |

Is the rule that says "You must read at least the last 5 volumes of the manga you choose to use for the challenge (if you're not reading it in its entirety) during the challenge period.", talking about if you started reading a series before starting the challenge, and you want to finish it for the challenge? If not what are the rules for putting series you are part way through reading and counting it for one of the challenges? I also need a recommendation for challenge 95 from an MRC staff. I don't mind anything that isn't horror, gore, ecchi, harem, or BL. |

Howdy again! I was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations for challenge #89. I had a series in mind, but I couldn't verify that the non-human character would've counted as a main character rather than as a supporting character, so I'm now in need of a good (ideally finished) series that features both a human and non-human main character. EDIT: I've also really been struggling with the searching interface when it comes to challenge #3. It's not difficult to find doujinshi based on series I've read, but it is hard to find any that are actually in the MAL database lmao. Any ideas how I can search better? |

Which series did you have in mind? Parasyte, Assassination Classroom, Shaman King, Yuu Yuu Hakusho, Bokurano, Soul Eater, Ai-Ren. It doesn't have to be in MAL, a link to another database is enough. |

"(98) Read a manga recommended to another manga you've read for this challenge." Is that for the recommendations tab under the manga's reviews? |

So I need help with #103-Read a favorite from one of your MAL friends - so they finally stop telling you to do it. Problem is, I don't have friends on here since none of my IRL friends read manga. So, anyone want to add me as a friend so I can read one of your faves? |
