This series has been a very entertaining read, however, ever since the Valhalla arc I feel that the story has suffered from a major decline in quality. Looking at the very high score the manga has I'm really curious to know how many other people share my thoughts. Spoilers for those who are not up to date.
Basically, the plot is so obviously unplanned that it's almost painful to read. While I did enjoy the Black Dragons arc, I thought it felt kind of... "detached" from the main story, and I wondered if the author knew what he wanted to do with it. Then came Tenjiku, and oh boy did things start to get messy. We're suddenly introduced to Izana, Mikey's brother whose existence hasn't been hinted at even once, and who just really wants to kill his family members because he's jealous. The entire arc consists of this type of seemingly random stuff that isn't built on anything previously established in the story, and then it all ends with Kisaki revealing his goal is to impress Hina. Our main antagonist created this convoluted criminal plan to get a girl whom he otherwise isn't even trying to communicate with. How does this make any sense? The finale feels like the author writing himself into a corner along with Kisaki.
Many important plot points seem to lack proper planning in this way, like the time travel. I'm not even expecting an explanation for the handshakes, but we still don't know how Takemichi did the very first leap. You could argue that it can still be addressed in the future, but it's weird that no one has even questioned it. Also, anyone else find it very... anticlimatic that Takemichi avoids telling anyone about the time travel, only for everyone to immediately believe it when they finally find out? Sure, his behavior served as proof, but if proof was all that was needed, couldn't he just have predicted a bunch of events on day one and get the others to trust him that way?
The characters also say or do things that seem significant but end up leading nowhere. Draken says "Kisaki adored Mikey. But before we knew it, that changed to hatred" which turns out to mean... nothing really, because Kisaki's motive wasn't about Mikey. Mikey threatens to kill Takemichi if he doesn't bring Baji back, nothing happens. Kisaki tearfully calls Takemichi "My hero" before killing him, which is especially weird after we learn his true motives.
It honestly feels like the author has no idea where he's going with the story. Recently they brought up Mikey's "darkness", which may explain some of his behavior, but it still feels random because no character ever questioned it before. Not to mention Takemichi's newfound future sight. |
