I have grown-up and apologize for the amount of cringe you're about to read
When I saw the part where Kayo was holding the baby, I was pretty sad.
I realise it's a good thing Kayo didn't kept herself attached to him for 15 years so she could move on, but I couldn't help but feel so sad since I was fully expecting her to end up with him.

That scene has been hunting me for a while now lol, I'm pretty new to watching anime (since quarantine started)

Its been a week or two since I've watched Erased, I'm Chinese so my grammar may suck

When I saw the part where Kayo was holding the baby, I felt rage then sadness then disappointment
I realise that it's a good thing Kayo didn't kept herself attached to him for 15 years so she could move on and find happiness, but I couldn't help but feel so sad since I was extremely attached to her and fully expecting her to end up with him

It felt like I was reading a NTR doujin, except when I read doujins I try not to get too attached to the characters so I don't feel bad when bad shit happens

I've been constantly thinking back to that scene since and when I do whatever mood I was in it just turns to sadness, I'm pretty new to watching anime (since quarantine started)

Eyy, welcome to the anime culture!

Yeah... I still remembered the time I watched it when it was still airing (I was in high school at that time) and that scene really broke my heart.

I had been shipping Satoru with Kayo so much throughout the show and in the end, it showed Kayo holding a baby from someone else. Felt butthurt for days. At least he still got Airi tho x')

I'm not quite sure. It's been quite a long time already so I don't really remember the little details. Only remembered they were fellow co-workers.

this anime showed me the sweetest girl x boy romance in the history of medium, made me fall in love with girl herself by watching it unfold through the boy's lenses, then cucked him and me by proxy

I don't complain tho, life is brutal etc, it still gets 10/10 from me

but damn

it's a melancholic anime, that thing was saddening but that's just reality, she wasn't going to wait forever.
Airi was really something, being reconnected in the end was the way it should be.

I can so sympathize! I definitely felt similarly to you when I first finished the anime. I was really upset that Kayo and Satoru didn't end up together in the end.

But then I started thinking about it, and I felt that the ending would have been alright with me even if Airi hadn't come back into the picture in the last episode. Satoru's problem from the beginning was that he felt distant from other people, and so it was like he was faking his relationships with even the people he was supposed to be closest to. We see that change throughout the course of the show as he tries again and again to save the people that have come to mean a great deal to him. Every time he goes back, he gets a little closer to those people, and it adds fuel to his motivation to do everything in his power to save them.

I think that's really good character development. By the last episode, we see Satoru as an adult, still very close to his childhood friends, and he's actually happy this time around. He's not alone, he's not faking caring about people, he's not just pretending to be interested in them. He genuinely loves and cares about the people in his life now, and him meeting Airi again is just like the icing on the cake.

When I started thinking about things that way, it definitely made me feel better about Satoru not ending up with Kayo. I truly believe things ended the way they should have. :)

That's just life dude. Let me ask you a question, in real life, have you seen someone get married with someone who went to the same elementary school? The likelihood of that is incredibly low. Life isn't that easy. Haven't watched the anime but read the manga, Kenya said something along the lines of "He has no romantic feelings towards Kayo" when he asked him if he like her or not, to which I agree. He didn't do it because he held romantic feelings towards her, he did it because he genuinely wants to save her. To the future, when he saw her holding a baby, he didn't feel sadden about it. The congratulations he gave her was real, not a pained one.

The problem with the anime community is that a lot of them can't face reality, which is reasonable since they're trying to escape it via anime.

If you're sad about them not being together, you still have Airi. Manga didn't fully confirmed it but it gaves us hope that him and Airi might stay together.

After a while now and having watched more anime, reading your comment made view this realistically, but unlike Kuzu no Honkai, I was more emotionally attached and was fully expecting them to end up together so when I found out Kayo ended up with someone else it made me sad lol

Even I felt that when I watched the anime, but I after reading the manga I was satisfied.

In the manga they show a scene in which Kayo starts crying because she that she going forward and leading a happy life was wring because while she was enjoying, Satoru was going through all the possible pain in the world.

Satoru then replied that it was all on him for sleeping 15 years and it wasn't her fault. It many seem like a lame excuse but it really made me feel better.

Even if the alternate happened in which Kayo and Satoru were together, I wouldn't love that as an ending. As much as I loved them being together, I prefer this ending more. This is just my personal opinion.

Please See: I went to the fandom and found out the there was a spin-off NOVEL and Manga. I was able to find links to the Manga (Boku Dake Ga Inai Machi: Gaiden), but I couldn't find any links to the novel.

If you do find links to the novel (Boku Dake Ga Inai Machi: One Record), please consider quoting me and giving the link.

Same!
In my case I liked this anime so much while watching but then got a little bit disappointed with the ending. But then like you I also started to think about it hard. And I came to the conclusion that it was right in all the way.
Because SATORU didn't only save KAYO.....but he also saved other 2 friends of him. And He never did anything to approach Kayo. He actually landed 18 years back because her mother got killed and he took a REVIVAL. So basically in the Revival world....Satoru got Kayo's presence for a while but when he came back for some moment he got AIRI'S support when everyone was thinking that He is the murderer of his own mother.
And Satoru is so SELFLESS which made me love him more & more.
And the other reason I felt like the ending was a masterpiece because the author showed us HOW HE MET AIRI and also showed that She was made for him.
And that makes a lot of sense because that's why AIRI EXISTED in the first place.

Btw,I am writing here because I just finished Re-Watching this Masterpiece(atleast it is a masterpiece for me).

Hope you guys/girls got some of my points. ^_^

WOW man i really never understand how people can be depressed over small things.

here is something to cheer you up, first it's life you don't get a girl or guy just because you helped them.
and you shouldn't ship 2 kids in the first place (they are just kids they don't understand romance and adult shit)
also the MC didn't help Hinazuki because he liked her, he helped her because he wanted to defeat the killer and to save his mother in the future.

and if rewatched the show again you will see that Airi is the only girl who liked the MC and she helped him even when that put her in danger as well.

In most countries and states the age of consent is 16, not 18. In Japan it is even lower, depending on a prefecture. You'll be surprised, but many westerners think that it is "creepy" for a 30-year-old to date a 20-year-old, even if it is completely legal and both of them are mature adults. IDK what's going on in their heads.

IDK about you, but I first fell in love when I was 11, started to have fantasies about sex (and masturbate, obviously) when I was 12 and this is pretty much normal for my generation (born in the mid of 90s) as most guys I know were like this as well. So yeah, kids of their age can understand romance for sure.

The main point though, it doesn't matter what MC thinks, it does matter what readers/audience think. As we watch this story we get attached to certain characters more than to others. And so we start to "ship" them unconsciously. Airi feels like a minor side-character and Kayo feels like the main heroine, this is why many people were disapponted with the ending. It isn't logical, it is emotional. By logic, MC doesn't even need to date any girls in the show, he could always find someone else, lol.

IN THE ENDING WE SEE SOME POSITIVE THING LIKE HE MEET AGAIN THE PIZZA GIRL BUT DUE TO TIME TRAVEL ONLY Satoru knows Airi.
Yes it's true (in my opinion) that they love each other before the time travel stuff.
But I don't know how Satoru would tell her,etc......etc

I'd like to give my 1 cent of opinion on this anime. I can sort of relate it being somewhat like a Sherlock Holmes v Prof. Moriarty kinda vibe. So this opinion is solely based on the anime and not including the manga, because from what I gathered, the story of the manga and anime is sort of different and there are elements in the manga that are very crucial to the story line that are not seen/included in the anime adaptation.

Although this anime is one of the best out there 8/10. I would've given it a 10/10 if not for the ending. The ending of this anime is upsetting and polarizing. Even the cover picture of this anime disagrees with the ending. Some would say that what Kayo did was acceptable and that it made sense Satoru ending up with Airi in the end. I don't get the point of view of the author why Kayo ended up with Himori. There was no indication in the earlier episodes that they had an inclination towards each other. There just wasn't any. Also, Airi and Satoru also didn't show any romantic scenes either. Airi, for me had more of a admiration towards Satoru rather than romantic feelings.

I would go on the opposite end. It would've been better if Satoru ended up with Kayo or at least she stayed single. If they ended up with each other, it would complete the their entire story together: boy went back in time, trying to save the girl and then eventually developed feelings for each other along the way then successfully saved her but separated temporarily by circumstances, boy went into a coma after encounter with baddie, wakes up then gets visits from friends and last to arrive is the girl after all these years waited for his awakening. Captures baddie and have a happily ever after.

But hey, that's just me. :)

My opinion:
I don't know about Kayo feelings, but I'm sure that Satoru had feelings for Airi. As for Kayo, he was just trying hard to save her, and this is what he would do with any of his friends. I had a doubt that the blond guy had feelings for Kayo since he was a bit jealous of her spending more time with Satoru.
He was crying in the hospital cause he was happy to see Kayo alive after all these years he spent in the hospital, the last scene under the bridge shows us his true joy at returning home and seeing Airi, which he really loved.

I just finished this anime 2 minutes ago. My Heart shrwinked when i saw kayo with a baby. But that is how life really is.

Happily Satorou meets Airi again. In 2006 (when the story starts) Satorou is 29 and Airi is 17. In 2010 (when they leer again) Satorou is 33 and Airi 21. So it's legal now guys!!!

MAN, i couldn't have agreed more than this 😂 You are so frank to say about your fantasies at that age, and yes, so me. I wouldn't have accepted it in front of anyone but now as you mentioned it 🤷🏻‍♂️

And the disappointment of people for the ending, you know people start watching animes to relive their stress caused due to the real life (atleast i think the majority, or rest may be due to peer pressure from their weeb friends) , and getting another real life element in the anime isn't that pleasuring... Another thing you should have figured it out before watching this anime, that it already got a *Seinen* tag along with it, which make it pretty obvious that it's ideology will be fully based on real life and the demographic is young adults who will like this theme.

And about the ending, in my opinion, as already many have mentioned, that's how life is... Satoru doesn't seem to have love with Kayo, and he already mentioned many times in the anime while he was a kid "I'm 29..." and stuffs which clearly mentioned he doesn't want it
He just wanted save all... And the complain of why Kayo and Kenya, author's choice 🤷🏻‍♂️

Even I'm also not much of an experienced weeb, you're free to contradict my opinions, just got into the anime world like 5 month may be due my sudden frustration of school and all stuffs after lockdowns... I'm just being into rom-coms only.. Light heart anime fan, doesn't much like gore and blood. But also doesn't mean that i haven't watched any of those, I've like Death Note, Parasite, and recently this...

Wow I feel so bad for Satoru cuz he worked so hard to save everyone but not now he had to waste 15 years of his life. Now I am so curious about who he will end up with. He would have ended up with Airi in the original timeline but now they are complete strangers who have nothing connecting them. The Biggest shock was Kaya was married to Hiromi who I suspected of being a secret girl. Viewers have no idea when these two started talking. But overall this Show was entertaining.

Tbh my problem with Kayo ending up with the girly-looking boy wasn't even that Satoru got cucked. She shouldn't wait ~10 years for some guy she had a crush on in elementary school. My problem is that they had 0 chemistry and that a relationship with someone you knew in elementary school is pretty unrealistic. There was no reason to force it. If Kayo ended up with some random dude, I'd be fine with it. But it's like, girl you do know there are more than 3 guys in the world, right?

Why can’t weebs handle endings that don’t end completely happily. Sometimes a bittersweet ending is far more appropriate. Also my guy, not every show is a romance.

Man, looking back, you're completely right, I was childish to think of it like such, this was probably the better ending.
