| There's like ten to twenty characters following the protagonist around at all times and only three are of any importance (five if you count Shin's parents, the other three of course being his BFF as well as blue haired chick and red haired chick). It's so odd because it's something you never see which in a way is actually kind of refreshing but at the same time obviously to nobody's surprise none of them really get any actual character development due to how many there are (even the few important ones haven't gotten much character development). As a result you get like twenty characters none of which you care about and it leaves the show feeling rather hollow and bland. I get that the show is incredibly cliche and embodies pretty much everything the community makes fun of Isekai shows for embodying, but at times it's done these cliches in a pretty fun way; pretty sure every episode has gotten at least one or two big laughs or smiles out of me and the first few episodes were actually somewhat promising. So it's a bit sad as I would have like to see how these characters would have played out if the numbers were kept much smaller. I'm not saying it's impossible to do large casts well, especially considering My Hero Academia, Assassination Classroom, and Dangan Ronpa were able to do it pretty successfully (although even those managed to still fail a few classmates each), but for a show like this with this type of writing, I feel like it would have been served better to have way less main characters following Shin around everywhere. I don't know, what are your thoughts? |

It can be, I do not deny it, this is not exactly an anime that I love and that I wait every week to watch it anxiously, I am entertained 20 minutes, but I do not think it is an anime that in a couple of years Ill remember especially |

No point going this far in. I have said I like this anime, its just it isnt amazing for me. |

Sure, MHA had 3 seasons so far giving it an advantage, but I still do not believe your assessment is accurate. Everyone in 1A has personality and are distinct. We know why each one fights and what their aspirations are. The entire first season was basically character development wearing a slice of life cape and a school setting mask. The side characters here feel like generic isekai/rom-com clones. Their motivation is "wow Shin-kun, sugoi. teach and notice me, senpai." What are these people fighting for? I'd hardly call "they were neighbors and now they are lovers" development. --- Back to the original question, having too many characters is not inherently a bad thing. The sin is not developing the characters. Like with cooking, the more you put on the plate the longer you need to heat it up for. If you take it out too early or don't apply enough heat for the given amount, it remains cold or uncooked. It may make the plate look better but it is not fit for consumption. If you don't spread the food out evenly, you will get a shell that is nice and warm, but under the shell it is still cold or frozen. The same occurs if you don't mix it. Going back to my example above, MHA has had 3 seasons in the oven, and at the moment it mostly cooked with a few burnt spots around the center and some raw parts around the edges. This series has only had 8 episodes. It is still too early to tell since every story paces itself differently, but a precursory glance through the oven window shows that the temperature may be a bit too low for the amount of food on the plate. It should be starting to brown by now, but it still looks sort of raw. |
