Hi all,

Really like the medieval periods, such as the setting of Berserk, my favourite anime and manga. What are some good animes set in a historical medieval setting?

Preferably something with adventure and action.

Thanks

Both of those are fantasy, not even set into the medieval era of our real world. The problem with the historical genre on MAL that 95% of the series tagged as such is fantasy and sci-fi.

What's the closest are:
Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Tsuioku-hen
Shigurui
Saraiya Goyou
Onihei
Vinland Saga (not aired yet)

All of these are historical fiction, but only Vinland Saga set in medieval Europe, it will have a lot of real life historical figures.

These look really good, especially the first one. Thanks!

I've read a little of Vinland Saga after I finished my first read of Berserk, however for some reason just trailed of reading it again. Will pick it up and watch the anime!

Thank you very much

Akagami no Shirayuki-hime takes place in a fantasy European setting with castles and princes.

Japanese people are rightly more interested in their own history.

Dororo (airing) - see https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2019-03-22/the-history-behind-osamu-tezuka-dororo/.144819
Hyouge Mono

The Edo period which ended with the Boshin War in 1868 is a pretty common setting. Try, for instance,

Sarai-ya Goyou
Oh! Edo Rocket
Miss Hokusai (movie)

Thanks! I don't know much about Japanese history, but I guess it's time to delve in it a little before watching Japanese history animes šŸ˜€

Thank you!

Closest historical anime would be this

https://myanimelist.net/anime/5386/Miyamoto_Musashi__Souken_ni_Haseru_Yume

Narrative is closer to documentary but it makes some interesting historical comparisons between feudal European knights and samurai and why the bow and arrow was not as popular in Japan

Seirei no Moribito is definitely worth a watch. Though it's a fantasy it has many realistic moments.

Junketsu no Maria.
Literally the only piece of media to get historical combat right, except for the magic parts of course.
