| So I've been learning Japanese for 4 years now, and I've used anime with *Japanese* subtitles very often as a way to supplement my learning. By now I think I've learned over 4,000 vocabulary words and kanji from taking the words/sentences I didn't understand from the Japanese subs, sticking them into my SRS flashcard deck, and reviewing regularly. (Side note: I highly recommend this method, its quite fun and can be very productive. Anyone who says you can't learn usable Japanese from anime is either mindlessly parroting what they've heard from others without putting in a solid effort themselves, has no idea that Japanese subtitles exist, is ignorantly assuming that it means you'll start talking like Goku all the time - which I certainly don't do, or some combination of all those). But now, I want to start getting into newer anime, most of which doesn't have Japanese subs available. The easiest to access is the english subbed variety. That isn't a huge deal to me, but I wonder if watching with english subs at the level I am now would still allow for any sort of improvement/maintenance of my Japanese. Does anyone with intermediate or above Japanese abillity still watch anime with subtitles? Do you find yourself still listening primarily to the Japanese and only using the english subs as a backup of sorts? Do you think it's helpful at all to your Japanese despite the english being there? What's your relationship with eng-subbed anime and what's the experience like watching it for you? |

When you watch raw what do you do about words you don't know yet? Can you easily pick them up by ear and look them up? Do you just ignore and keep watching? The reason I mostly used J-subs rather than just raw was because there would typically be anywhere from 20 to 80 words in each show that I didn't understand, and for easier shows (~20) it didn't bother me too much, but in shows with more rare vocab I'd find that if I wasn't able to easily look things up (aided by having the written japanese words right in front of my face), I'd get frustrated & feel like I didn't fully know what was going on? Also what do you mean 'writing JP scripts'? Watching raws then typing what you hear? |

| It is a fact that your brain will always try to go to the easy route. Don't be tempted to use english subtitles. It decreases the brain's ability to memorize (at least for me). It is the pain to force your ear to pick the words and look in a dictionary that makes you learn. |

| You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/. The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish. Show your support to your favorite artist if you can! ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name. | My friend does this and he came up with a trick to make it more productive. He shifts the subtitle timing so that every phrase appears somewhat later. So first he tries to understand the phrase by himself without any help, and only when he has troubles he looks at the delayed translation. That way the subs don't tempt him to just stop trying to listen at all. |
| I usually watch them without subtitles. When there's something I don't understand, I listen to it again, and if a specific part wasn't understood even with that, I go look the english subtitles for that part after I finish the episode. That takes a bit of time but since that's not really common I don't really care about taking more time when it happens. |

| I always watch anime with English subs. And for learning purposes, I watch the anime again but with the Japanese subtitles. At my current level, watching raw is very difficult because of the 'technical' terms I don't understand unique to the anime's story which hinders me from fully enjoying it, so I need subs. I have no problem with the grammar structure, though. Just the vocabs. |

| I always use english subs. A lot of anime has weird vocab that you won't really ever learn (like in sci-fi stuff all those science words) so I use it to pick up on those words. I watch J-dramas and japanese stage plays raw tho. As it's a good way to test myself and then if I find a word I don't know then I just look it up. I've learnt a lot of vocab this way. |

| I'm still watching with subs because it's more comfortable, but i wouldn't recommend it if you're watching for learning purposes. I've stopped actively learning Japanese and only watch/read Japanese media when there's no (good) translation available, which is uncommon for anime but quite common for manga and LN. |

I've been learning Japanese myself for over 4 years now, but I still use English subs. I tried to not read the subs, only read when I need confirmation or I fail to get the words (which is very often, shame on me) I mostly learn my japanese through reading doujinshis on pixiv, and converse with the artists, sometimes I translate doujinshis for the english fans to enjoy. As for my relationship with english subs, I'm quite okay with them. I mean, I'm a little picky but it's not a problem. I still grateful for fansubs because I know translating stuff is not easy especially if you're doing it for free. |
