Kagami said: @Cactii - To be fair, this thread is showcasing why the term weeb bugs me to no end. I don't know OP and I have nothing against OP, but some people tend to care way to much about what others do and call them weebs for such petty reasons. Not as a joke either, but to shame them. Using this development as an example. OP claims these people will not play games that arent anime style and feels the need to shame them over it. This is what absolutely breaks any sound logic.Instead of letting people play or watch what they want for whatever reasons they might be, people feel the need to actually care. Its troubling because this whole story is a non issue and its best to let these people do them. Its their life. I see this so often. What i was trying to convey is about the origin and true value of the term itself not how people use them. On how people use it, that would push to a different case. If we track it back a little, the question is "what does the term "weeb" carries that it has the power to shame people?", "who is the one that attach that "power" to the term?". 1. People push every negative impression giving by anime to the term weeb. Thus as result the term weeb hold all the negative effect. 2. The term has this power because we acknowledge the illusion of that power as real, thus it becomes real. Therefore, we give birth to an illusion bullet call "term weeb" So, If you feel like it waste of your time, just ignore those illusion bullet. If you feel irritate and would like to argue, then break down the illusion until it has no power to irritate you. About your development story. I guess it has not much to do with term weeb right? From what I can understand, OP(in your story) just can't accept people's preference, rather than he does not understand why people prefer anime style, it is that his his subconsciousness does not want to understand them, and to cover or to justify the act of "does not want to understand them", this gives OP the sense of insecurity, OP needs a better reason to "not understand them". Thus to cover his insecurity, his subconsciousness make him feel the need to shame them. Case like this does not only happen when it is about anime and western stuffs. inside anime community itself, the same pattern already exist. When people don't want to watch the the "suppose" classic or "good old" shows because of art style or animation style, some fan feel the need to shame them by the illusion of "shit taste" or the like. Therefore, my impression to this pattern is the same. If you feel like it would just be a waste of your time or a waste of your brain cell to interact with these people, then ignore them. If you feel irritate and feel like to argue, then go down, ignore the meaningless bullet and tear down all the illusions and pull out this true reason. Of course here, I am not saying "insecurity" is the only true impulse, there are others, this is just an example. |

Kuraokani said: Well I don't know why people hate anime itself but when you say "weebs" I immediately think of people who use words like "Kawaii" or add honorifics to other people's names even though they aren't Japanese. Personally, I find weaboos very cringeworthy. I equate a weaboo to a kid that doesn't really know what is or isn't socially acceptable. The kids who use words that they either heard on a T.V show, heard a friend say, or just want to fit in with everyone else. To be honest, weaboos have actually ruined part of my life. I'm a avid YouTube user and recently started watching top 10 anime list to try and find new series to watch. Needless to say, youtubes recommendations went completely haywire. Next thing I know I'm seeing "Asuna is so KAWAII" or "top 10 Kawaii moments!" or "Mikisa is too Kawaii!!!!!". It's annoying. Now it's like I have a kid yelling in my face every time I go on YouTube. P.S, another reason would be that I knew a few kids in highschool (I didn't know anything about anime back then)that weighted 300 pounds and had greasy hair and wore the same hoodie all year round. When you overheard them talking it was about either Hentai or new anime coming out. Again, needless to say, talking openly about cartoon porn in highschool tends to invite negative attention. Especially when it's coming from a couple of fatass, greasy, weaboos. so...am I a weeb ? well me and my friend sometime speak in japanese (I did it for lolz) so...am I a weeb ??? Luckily, we do have a place to send you and your friend before you go full-on retarded weaboo. http://snapjudgment.org/straight-camp Doushite... Just kidding I normally speak with english or my parents language when I speak with my friend I speak japanese just ofr lolz altho I grew to dislike america song because a lot of popular america song is about love... |

Cactii said: "Muh Chinese cartoons are holier than thou" To be perfectly honest I've never met any "true" weeb to form a solid opinion about them. All that I've witnessed is the illusion of "weeb" created by internet users and then bashed by internet users. When you try to catch this "illusion" of weeb, then all you can see is this illusion, confined by its "existence", chasing the non-exist meaning of weeb and in turn get (butt) hurt by it. I always think of it as a joke, an illusion which is created for the sake of joke but when people try to push a "serious" sense into the joke and as result it gets too serious, it become a tedious, cringey and overused joke. Trying to take a joke in serious view is quite troublesome in the first place after all. thewiru said: Weeb and Otaku do not have the same meaning though. At this point, because of overusage, weeb and otaku mean the same thing, so i'll use the shorter word. Memesters are actually quite serious people. If you tell them their strawmen don't exist, they break down crying. "WHAT? NO ONE IDENTIFIES AS AN ATTACK HELICOPTER? BUT BUT BUT MUH MEMEES!". |

@Kagami You clearly don't seem to understand anything i'm saying. The sole reason of this thread is to try to understand the "why". I see no logic in one hating something solely because such thing is anime/anime style, but maybe someone here sees logic and may be able to explain such logic to me. There are reasons people like things, dislike things, think the way they do or act the way they do. "Because yes" or "I don't need a reason" are pityful lines of thought and ignore all praxeology. I would love if you quoted the phrases where i shamed such people. |

That's up to them and I actually agree with them if it isn't their cup of tea. I will say sorry for misreading (usually do better at that), but its still the same point anyway. Let people do them. Not everybody will want to watch and/or play a game that has this style. Simply do no care what others play. Much easier that way. |

The same reason there's so much hate towards other fan bases on the internet. The way everyone on the internet assumes all my little pony fans are animal fucking weirdos or the way everyone accuses all emo band fans as whiny preachy little shits. Many people like to assume all anime fans are neck beard losers who've never had a girlfriend and jerk off to futanari-tentacle-rape-monster girl hentai 24/7. These are all stereotypes, of course. But really it comes down to "You enjoy something I don't, so clearly you're in the wrong and something's the matter with you." Then again, I feel like most people who hate on anime fans don't actually buy into these stereotypes. Probably they just see an opportunity to troll someone, and like the asshole they are go for the kill. There are certainly anime fans out there (and people of any fan base out there) that are indeed cringy losers. But it really is the minority. I wouldn't pay haters any mind. Most of them are just trolls looking to troll. |

Does it really matter what games people don't want to play for whatever reasons they don't want? Its a really small thing and just not worth the waste of time and energy. Its just, anime isn't for everybody nor does everybody want to be apart of it or look at it. The reality is, that's there choice and they have that right. Should they be going around dissing anime fans and calling them weebs? Hell no. Though, am I going to care if they don't want to play a game for being anime style? No way. Let them do them and that's their choice. |

Th problem is "weeb" as a word is overused to describe ANY anime fan. Since anime still has a stigma of being childish or overly sexualised, people tend to look down on anime fans. However, there ARE people who are perfect examples of the proper usage of the word "weeb." They are mostly harmless, but are annoying and completely delusional. It's thanks to them that other anime fans who are less crazy get a bad rep too. But, as much as there are anime fans who go out to prove how much more of a fan they are, there's also people in the anime fandom who try to prove how "normal" they are compared to the nuttier fans. EDIT: I just took a quick look at the front page of the Anime Discussions today and sure enough, anime fans in general are NOT helping themselves in making non-fans think better of them. |

Of course, there are people who legit don't like weebs, but c'mon, most weebs are annoying. But these people are a minority, at least in the brazilian circle you used as an example. As for the rest of the internet, idk bro ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ edit: I ended up reading the whole thread and I guess people hate it because they don't want to be associated with the image they have of an anime watcher. In other words, they don't want to be seen as weeaboo themselves, that's why they'll go to the lenghts of rejecting a game because of its character design. |

Filthy Frank made a video in which he explained what weeaboos are, but his fans didn't get the point of the video and now they've spreaded the word "weeb" to the point of overusing it to insult anyone who shows even the slightest interest in anime stuff. It doesn't help the fact that there are tons of people who call themselves "weeb" ironically because they don't know its meaning, so they act in the cringiest manner on purpose and make every anime fan look like a self-deprecating loser. There is a lot of hate towards anime because the popular and mega mainstream animes are quiet bad most of the time, or really not that great (SAO, Naruto, Bleach, DBZ, OPM...). A lot of anime watchers are very young and don't have critical sense and praise some shitty animes. The stereotypes of anime are really degrading: immature shounen, highschool cringy romance, loli and tentacle rape... As an anime watcher (ok I'm not a HUGE anime watcher but I watch about 2 to 4 animes a month since two years), a lot of animes are really poorly written, immature and melodramatic compared to TV Shows for example. Honeslty, the hate anime industry receives is justified, for the most. (Seriously, finished Elfen Lied today, claimed as a decent anime, what a piece of shit, was the plot written by a 8 year old boya?) It's just sad that the actual masterpieces and brillant pieces of art are overshadowed by the mainstream shitty animes. |
