All of my friends enjoyed the anime and recommended Cowboy Bebop to me but I absolutely hate it so far. I Just started watching it and I lost it at episode 4 and am planning on dropping it if it continues to be this bad. The main issues I have with the anime so far is that Spike is a total dumbass who can't piece together anything. He's extremely lucky but never seems to turn in any of the bounties or piece together a puzzle.

As can you guess, the thing that ruins Cowboy Bebop so much for me is Spike being EXTREMELY oblivious to vital clues that would get him rich. So I'm asking if the anime continues with Spike being ignorant to vital clues or does it end and the anime gets a shift in course (from repetitive bounty hunting with no plot to something else)?

I don't care about spoilers so you can spoil it for me but I just want to know if there will be a change in the anime and at what episode?

Thank you. Thought Cowboy Bebop was going to shift from episodic. Does Spike ever pick up on any vital clues? I don't really want to drop an anime with so much talent in the staff because it's rare but being blind to clues is a major pet peeve of mine.

P.S. I love your profile pic of Hei. Darker than Black is one of my faves.

Fifth episode is when the show is starting to be epic. Before that it can be a bit boring. So one more to go ;]

As a person whose favorite anime is Zero no Tsukaima and who claims he has seen "almost all the animes", and yet watching Bebop only now, I honestly don't think you are capable of appreciating the greatness of Cowboy Bebop.

Let me make it clear it for you, Cowboy Bebop is not a mystery anime and Spike is not a detective. Cowboy Bebop is an episodic , character driven show. The bounty plotline is just there to carry the characters from one point to other one. Spike is the type of guy who solves his problems by using brute force rather than thinking. And this never changes throughout the show. So, you might as well drop the show now if it bothers you that much.

I suggest you drop the anime. I mean, if you know you hate it that much, there's no reason to consume more. And there's not really any character development for Spike in this anime, so what you hate about him still there until the very last episode. As for the plot, almost every episode is an episodic type(a.k.a "no plot).
By the way, could you give me some example on why you think Spike is a total dumbass?

Easy there. There's no need for that.

I was actually about to type a long response going over everything the show does right and why it's so good.

Then I remembered this is MAL and nobody gives a fuck.

It never does. Take my advice and drop the show. You're better off watching true masterpieces like Naruto or Fairy Tail.

^^^DON"T LISTEN TO THIS GUY! He does not know what he is talking about. If you drop it, you will regret it.

This show gets good at episode 5 'Ballad of Fallen Angels'. You get to see a little backstory into Spike's past. Very intriguing. But keep watching the show to the full. It gets better. Trust me.

And who doesn't enjoy this? Like cmon.

I like the fact that Spike is a badass but I absolutely hate Spike being EXTREMELY oblivious to vital clues that would get him rich. He passes so many opportunities due to both a strike of fortune and misfortune. Like he found that dog and could've cashed it in and get rich but keeps it without knowing it's purpose or importance. And the time when he came across the capsule at episode 4 and didn't threaten Twinkle with it. I just wish Spike would notice the clues handed to him. Being oblivious to clues is one of my pet peeves.

I don't really like Naruto or Fairy Tail, I rank them 5/10.

Thank you, this is what I needed. Episode 5 is good enough to mask and cloak my anger at ep. 1-4.

You're making the incorrect assumption that Spike became a bounty hunter in order to get rich. He actually doesn't care about the money - for him, it's more about the thrill of the chase. This is established in the first episode, when Jet points out that, while he did catch a bounty, the amount of collateral damage he caused in the process killed the dough. Spike does what he wants, how he wants, when he wants, whether or not it makes him money. He goes after the big bounties for the challenge, not the big payday. The money is really just a way of keeping score.

For example, in episode 2, one of your complaints is that he kept Ein. His actions in the episode make it clear that he cares about lives (even dogs' lives) far more than he pretends to. He had a choice in the episode - he could have gone after Abdul and gotten the bounty, or he could have saved the dog. He chose to save the dog, and take him somewhere he would be safe and taken care of, i.e. the Bebop. He pretends he doesn't care about the dog, but watch his face when Jet reminds him that he's the one who brought the dog home - he was caught in a lie and he knew it.

The same goes for Twinkle in Gateway Shuffle. He doesn't really care about the reward. He realized she was a murderous eco-terrorist bitch who blackmailed politicians to get her way, decided the universe was better off without her, and put the vial in her pocket in the hope that it would get her in the end.

The key to understanding Bebop is to realize that it's a very character-driven show. You can't always go by what the characters say. More often, it's the actions they take or the things don't say that tell you what's really going on. I personally think that you really have to watch the entire series in order to really appreciate it, but if you're not hooked by episode 5, you probably won't enjoy the rest of the series.

I never thought that Spike wanted to be rich, I just wanted him to be rich but still act like himself. If Spike finishes his bounty jobs without giving up and looking for a new bounty I'd love the show so much more. Just my personal preference.

If he became rich, it would be because he's not acting like himself. Again, Spike simply doesn't care about money or even justice. He's mostly in it for the challenge of catching big baddies. There's no way to explain why without spoiling it, so...

I get that it's your personal preference, and yeah, it's not for everyone. Like I said, if you're not hooked by episode 5, the show is just not for you. No big deal, different strokes and all that. I'm just trying to explain why your expectations for the show are not going to happen, because that's not what the show is about.

edited to add: that's not to say, he's not happy to claim bounties. He is, since it means they'll get to eat real food and make repairs to their ships, it's just that money is not his first priority and never will be.

i'm on episode 19 and was also curious when it would get good since so many people seem to like it so much -w-...
....

currently it's kinda like that other space-thingy that didn't really lead anywhere.. Ergo Proxy,
episodic, some deeper meaning hidden within the episodes but nothing i can really spot or have the brains to figure out, ....i keep getting the feeling that Cowboy Bebop just tries to be something that it's not,
-sometimes it tries to be a comedy, sometimes it tries to be mystery or drama, but nothing really seem to stick

-but eh, it's another anime to cross off the list and i had only once watched the movie sometime in the past and just felt like finding out what it was all about,
i came in with high expectations and thus far i've been heavily disappointed;

there have been a few parts and pieces here and there that have been interesting, maybe one or two episodes has actually been good, but lots of the times i'm left sitting there and staring at the screen, asking "Wait, what? Was i supposed to understand what just happened here?"

but yeah, no, unless something change drastically in the last 7 episodes, i don't see this one getting a very high vote from me, which feels rather strange considering the anime's current score; maybe i just don't get it.
I like to comment Episodes as i Watch them.

I'd say you are interpreting things wrong, but, hey, who is right? Jump off and find a new show, or buckle down and finish the show.

Cowboy Bebop has the relatively same quality from the very first episode to the very end.. Yes, of course some episodes are better than the others, but it is never "going better after episode x" ...
I realize too sometimes it took times for someone to enjoy the show.. I am for example, fucking sleepy when I first watch Mushishi and Gintama.. But as times I get used to it, I realize how good they are, and both become my favorites, among the best animes I ever watched.. And I found it great even when I rewatched those that I thought boring episodes ...

Btw, Zero no Tsukaima is fucking boring for me, even after I forced myself watching it to the end of 1st season ...

Cowboy Bebop is the best Anime ever made. #1 top of pops !
Character driven with great music and one of the best intro's even made, (the intro) possibly only beaten by R.O.D.'s.
On a scale of 1 to 10 this series gets a 25!

My concern is for the Netflx live action version. John Cho could pass as Spike, but the actors for Jet Black and Faye are not even close in appearance. It also looks like they have left Edward out of the series.
And just to top it off Fayes legendary outfit also appears to be missing from the show.

Dumb arses are going to make a hash of the greatest Anime ever made. Who knew .....

Episode 5. Usually that's when you start to get invested. But Bebop is good throughout, so it's just a matter of finding your entry point. My entry point was Jamming with Edward (ep 9), which is a little later than most people, but I was 15 then, so I loved Ed. Your age matters too, you won't probably get the beauty of it if you're not yet 17. Tbh, it became a masterpiece for me on the rewatch, because then I was 20 and I could appreciate all of the details that made it a genius piece of work. So I'd suggest you be a little patient with it.
