Today, CraveOnline announced they've acquired MyAnimeList. Basically, this means they'll be taking over ownership of all MAL services. It doesn’t mean that I'm (Xinil) gone though, so don’t fret! I'm still the lead administrator and editor-in-chief of MAL, and will continue to be for many years to come.

This acquisition enables MAL to continue to grow without being burdened by rising server and bandwidth fees (which have increased a lot lately), and helps us branch out into more beneficial features (think video). CraveOnline has no plans to change our community or thwart the direction we’re headed. If anything, they'll help us get the things we need faster and more efficiently.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask here, or send me a private message. I'll do my best to answer.

Garrett Gyssler

So are you envisioning something like crunchy roll whaen you say video? Honestly though I like MAL more as a anime database. Oh well I'm sure it will turn out just fine.
Edit: So Xinil are you going to give anymore information on the deal?

The American Dream!

Hope the future for MAL is bright and rosy. Nothing stays the same naturally, but lets hope the changes that come our way are always beneficial. :)

Maybe a 'video' tab next to 'pictures', that has trailers and clips of anime?

Its an awesome idea Xinil. Give us video content, but dont cross the line into illegality. I'd really like to see trailers for shows, saves me the trouble of Googling or going to Youtube, etc.

Wow, congratulations. With just a few additions/improvements I could see MAL becoming THE anime site for fans and this sounds like a big step in that direction.

The first reaction when I read the title was "Oh shi-" Well, it's a relief that it's not what I was thinking. The video tab should hopefully contain trailer&some short clips from anime. Oh and also, OP and ED. Probably the easiest way to do them would be letting users upload and then mods would check.

As long as you are here Xinil, I doubt that anything "bad" will happen to this site. Hopefully this will help us to get our Wikipedia page soon. The other tries weren't so successful.

Edit: Forgot to add, videos would probably impossible/too expensive considering the bandwitdh this site already uses. Anything that makes you lose less money is useful.

Lol.

Pretty much impressive.
Its not easy to come up with an original idea and manage to get money on it.
And probably the sum Xin got ain't just a few bucks. (Such a big community, growng up at each day, gathering so much attention....)

Xin, well done man....

Keep up the good job.

Now that I check CraveOnline, I can't seem to find a link to MAL. I see OneManga and Saiyan Island under the comics section, but can't seem to find MAL on the site. Checked up other sections too, and even used the search tool at the top. We will appear under comic section, right?

Seems like CO isn't the best site to acquire MAL (hadn't heard of them before), but still, better than nothing. A small step for MAL is a big step for humanity. Oh, wait...

Actually, I would like to see eg under the Edit Anime Information
http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?id=3467
option View Trailer/Preview.
It would be quite convenient, and maybe a ED and OP animation

I'll second the "O SHI-" when I first read this, but I'm pleasantly surprised. This is pretty mind-blowing and exciting. Congratulations :)

I know I'm pretty new here, but thanks for all the hard work you've put into this site. It's fantastic, and now we can only branch out in bigger and better directions. The whole video idea is really, really intriguing to me. Having trailers and possibly OP/ED(if they're legal) around is really cool.

And which way is Xinil's for the party? Or who's holding it? I'd say the big lug deserves one.

how much of an impact are they going to have on content/advertising? from what the yahoo article was saying they primarily target a demographic of which i am not a part that makes up only part of our community. i'm not sure how big of a part, but i'll assume that Bleach is a good measure with approx. 20,000 users rating it at 7 or higher out of more than 50,000 MAL users. which means that they care about fewer than 40% of MAL users. so i have to wonder if they'll try to bolster that number at the expense of the other 60+%.

ofc if this is like when Gamespot bought GameFAQs then it should be fine. (for those not familiar with the reference, Gamespot just added a few links to its articles on the main page, small link icons to most of the other pages and linked most of the content from GameFAQs on Gamespot in such a way as to make it appear as if it had originated there, but left everything else alone).

so do you have a non-disclosure agreement concerning the purchase price Xinil?

But yeah congrats to you Xinil for getting rich from a good idea and keeping a steady income out of it too. I guess thats a dream come true for allot of people, and we probably wont need to worry too much about things going radically different until your gone. ^^

Classic story of the internet underdog that grows until it's big enough to sell out....Hopefully this will mean less "MAL is down for maintenance" messages....and that you don't sell out your user's watching habits for cheap advertising or a craptacular recommendation system that recommends licensed anime....

Questions:
>>taking over ownership of all MAL services
but
>>I'm still the lead administrator and editor-in-chief of MAL

Does that mean Crave people have authority to dictate whats on the site or not? Like if they want a peace of their thing on here you(xinil) must implement it?

Will Crave ask you to put their name where yours is (or next to it) in the lists?

Are the banners still going to be around in this case? BTW, they are not as bad as they used to be with more or less reasonable content and some even anime related.

If anything happens to Crave, what happens to MAL?

Just comments:
This acquisition enables MAL to continue to grow without being burdened by rising server and bandwidth fees.
The sound of that is so sweet and comforting :)

We can still download those licensed anime Edy. At least the recommendations would be better than the redundant crap that is, "Watch dis! Itz da sequel!"

tmth: CraveOnline and I will work together as best as possible to come to an agreement over anything that might become an issue.

The banners as they are now will stay. Hopefully we've weeded out any yucky pop-ups. If you see any, let me know.

CraveOnline invests in many different websites, so it's unlikely we'll see any falling out from their end.
